Bizarro (DC Animated Universe)

Bizarro is a supporting antagonist in the DC Animated Universe.

He is a (disfigured) clone of Superman, created by Lex Luthor using a few drops of Superman's blood. He has almost all of Superman's strengths, but a damaged mind that leaves him unable to think clearly and understand that his actions are harmful. He truly wants to be a hero, but doesn't understand that he's actually hurting people, until Superman gives Bizarro his own planet to protect. A while afterwards, Luthor lobotomizes and brainwashes Bizarro in order to be more evil, and he becomes part of the Secret Society of Super Villains.

In Superman: The Animated Series, he was voiced by Tim Daly, who also voiced Superman's Brave New Metropolis counterpart. In Justice League Unlimited, he was voiced by George Newbern, who also voiced Justice Lord Superman.

Biography[]

Superman: The Animated Series[]

Bizarro started out as a flawless clone of Superman, Lex Luthor created from a sample of Superman's DNA, to be a tool he could use and control. However; the clone was eventually transformed into a pale deformed dimwitted version of the Man of Steel, as a result of Superman's DNA being different from average humans. He gets his name from Mercy Graves' snippy reply of his query of what he is after his body begins to mutate. Determined to prove himself as a hero, the unintelligent Bizarro began performing "heroic actions" in Metropolis, but was far too destructive to be of any real help to anyone causing Superman to step in and save the day.

Later, Bizarro takes an interest in Lois Lane and brings her to Luthor's secret laboratory where he was made. After discovering that he is in fact a clone Bizarro attacked the laboratory in frustration causing it to self destruct. As the ceiling begins to fall Bizarro catches it and stays behind so Superman can get Lois to safety. Lois calls Bizarro a hero, and they fly away just before the laboratory explodes.

Bizarro, unknown to Superman, survived the explosion and wandered aimlessly ending up at the Fortress of Solitude. While there he destroyed the place and was convinced by the Brainiac orb to be the real Superman. Deciding he needed to rebuild Krypton, he returned to Metropolis and began destroying and rearranging it to look more like "his home planet". Superman intervened once again, stopping Bizarro from destroying Metropolis with a nuclear missile. Superman, feeling bad for Bizarro's miserable life, took him to a new planet that could sustain life, but nothing lived there except one creature.

Bizarro made this creature his pet, dubbing it Krypto, and was happy there until Mister Mxyzptlk arrived. He convinced Bizarro that Superman put him there out of jealousy. Bizarro returned to earth and battled Superman again. Superman convinced Bizarro Mxyzptlk had tricked him, and Bizarro was returned to his homeworld.

Justice League Unlimited[]

At some point, for reasons never explained, Bizarro returned to Earth and teamed up with Giganta to break Gorilla Grodd out of prison, but Wonder Woman and Longshadow stopped them. He would later be a member of Grodd's Legion of Doom while having his mind surgically altered by Lex Luthor, his former master, to make Bizarro more controllable, which starts his warped sense of understanding to actually be backwards as it is in the comics. Ironically, when Lex accidentally switches bodies with The Flash, Bizarro is the only one to raise the idea that Luthor is not himself, but because he speaks in opposites, nobody takes this statement seriously.

Bizarro sided with Luthor when he was attacked by Grodd and his loyal followers. During the fight, Bizarro tried to choke Grodd but was pummeled by Rampage and hit by Electrocutioner's blast. Bizarro and the rest of the surviving villains helped the Justice League when Darkseid's forces attacked Earth. He aided Dr. Light, Black Canary, and Green Arrow in fighting the Parademons invading Rome. In the end, Bizarro and the others were given a chance to run off from the Justice League.

Trivia[]

This version of Bizarro is based on the Post-Crisis Bizarro first appearing in The Man of Steel #5 (1986). In Justice League Unlimited he becomes lobotomized to be like his Silver Age comic book counterpart.
