~ Black Belle |
Maybelle Elizabeth Colter, AKA Black Belle, is a supporting character in Red Dead Redemption 2, appearing in the optional side-mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman. She is a wanted outlaw tracked down by the player (either Arthur Morgan or John Marston depending on at what point the player accepts the mission) for information about Jim "Boy" Calloway. She can also be encountered in Red Dead Online.
She is voiced by Rebecca Watson.
Biography[]
Black Belle is a member of the infamous Colter Tobin Gang who was declared a wanted outlaw after a robbery in Rhodes. The last surviving member of the gang, she was nicknamed "The Grand Dame of Gunslingers" and "The Dynamite Dowager" due to her firearms proficiency and frequent use of dynamite. During her career she married six men, all of whom were criminals and all of whom died relatively quickly. As a result, she always wears black clothing in memory of her fallen husbands. She also encountered Jim "Boy" Calloway, who was an incompetent, drunken coward despite his in-game heroic reputation. She is wanted dead or alive in the state of Lemoyne.
Red Dead Online[]
The player can encounter Black Belle at Old Harry Fen. She will initially be hostile towards the player, lighting a stick of dynamite and preparing to blow them up before realizing they are a prison escapee, not a bounty hunter. She will then rip off the dynamite's lighting cord before offering the player money to break some of her accomplices out of prison.
After completing this mission, the player can find Black Belle again at Old Harry Fen. She will offer more jailbreaks, paid killings, supply destructions, coach robberies and horse/wagon thefts to the player. Accepting these missions will decrease the player's honour.
Red Dead Redemption 2[]
If the player accepts the mission "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", they are given the names of four outlaws - Black Belle, Billy Midnight, Emmet Granger and Flaco Hernández - to track down and interview about Jim Calloway for his biography. Belle can be found at her cabin in the Bluewater Marsh. Upon arriving, the player asks her about Calloway only to notice a group of bounty hunters approaching. Belle refuses to hide and instead agrees to give herself up; then, as the lead bounty hunter approaches, she orders the player to detonate one of her bombs, killing him and triggering a firefight which the player and Belle eventually win, killing all the bounty hunters. Afterwards Belle tells the player that Calloway was a coward who would usually run from a fight and spent more time selling his exploits to the newspapers than fighting. She then poses for a photo with her gun before riding away.
Trivia[]
- Belle is the only gunslinger encountered in the mission, Calloway included, to survive and not try and kill the player.
- Belle was likely based on real-life gunslinger Belle Starr, an infamous sharpshooter nicknamed "The Bandit Queen" who even wore similar clothes to Black Belle. Ironically, despite Black Belle being the only gunslinger to survive her encounter with the player, Starr herself was murdered in 1889, possibly by her son, her daughter or a disgruntled sharecropper.
