The Black Cat Pirates (クロネコ海賊団 Kuroneko Kaizokudan) are the main antagonists of the Syrup Village Arc in the manga and anime series One Piece. They are a pirate crew led by Captain Kuro who is involved in his plan of faking his death and killing everyone in Syrup Village.

History[]

Three years before the main story begins, Captain Kuro of the Black Cat Pirates had gained notoriety through clever heists and ruthless tactics, even killing his own crew members due to his indiscriminate fighting style. Tired of constantly being hunted by Marines and bounty hunters, Kuro staged his own death by using a lookalike. He appointed Jango as captain, trained his crew to survive without him, and instructed them to return in three years.

Kuro then assumed a new identity, "Klahadore," after faking being shipwrecked and was taken in by a wealthy family. He slowly gained the trust of the villagers and the family's daughter, Kaya, after her parents died mysteriously, something Jango suspected was Kuro's doing. As her caretaker, Kuro secretly planned to kill her and inherit her fortune once the three-year mark passed.

When the time came, Kuro reunited with Jango and planned to have Kaya hypnotized into signing a will that left everything to Klahadore. He would then have his crew stage a pirate attack to kill Kaya and destroy the village's trust in outsiders, covering his tracks and ensuring no one suspected him. Unbeknownst to the crew, Kuro also intended to kill them all to eliminate any loose ends.

However, Usopp and Luffy overheard Kuro's plan. Although Usopp's warnings were dismissed due to his reputation as a liar, the Straw Hats intervened. Kuro, losing patience, revealed himself and attempted to kill his associate Merry, but failed. Merry warned Kaya, leading to a fierce battle. Luffy defeated Kuro despite his speed, and Usopp protected Kaya from Jango. Kuro's crew carried him away after the loss, while Jango was left behind, unconscious.

To preserve peace in Syrup Village, Kaya and Usopp kept the incident secret. Jango later redeemed himself, erased his criminal record, and joined the Marines under Captain Hina. Meanwhile, the Black Cat Pirates remained active, replacing their ship's prow and continuing their work with Kuro, who remains falsely believed dead by the Marines.
