The Black Dragon, also referred to as the Great Dark Dragon, is the overarching antagonist of the 2023 video game Sonic Superstars.
During the Northstar Islands incident, a colossal and age-old dragon was released from its captivity. This mighty creature, known as the Black Dragon, had been sealed away due to the heroic efforts of Super Sonic and Trip. However, Dr. Eggman, the notorious antagonist, had nefarious intentions to unleash this ancient beast as part of his grand scheme for global dominion. Fortunately, Sonic and his loyal companions intervened just in time, preventing Eggman from carrying out his wicked plan. Despite their valiant efforts, the Black Dragon managed to break free from its confinement, fleeing into the unknown, leaving a trail of uncertainty in its wake.
Appearance[]
The creature that comes into view is a colossal dragon-like being, boasting a magnificent display of purple scales that shimmer in the sunlight. Remarkably, it shares several striking resemblances to Trip, including a long, sinuous neck and a powerful, whip-like tail. Adding to its intimidating presence, the creature is adorned with a collection of spiked metal bracelets that wrap around its forelimbs, giving off an aura of power and danger. Furthermore, it sports a spiked metal belt that encircles its waist, emphasizing its imposing stature. To complete its formidable appearance, the creature dons a pair of sturdy metal boots, enhancing its already impressive physicality.
Biography[]
Past[]
There is a lack of extensive knowledge regarding the Black Dragon, but based on the murals discovered on the Northstar Island, it appears that it was once ensnared in a distinct dimension by Trip's civilization, who harnessed the extraordinary abilities of the Chaos Emeralds in conjunction with a sizable purple gemstone.
Trio of Trouble[]
Dr. Eggman embarks on a journey to the enchanting Northstar Islands, fueled by his ambitious vision of establishing an expansive mega corporation. His cunning plan revolves around harnessing the immense power of the colossal creatures that call this picturesque island their home.
As part of his elaborate plan, Eggman recruits the help of Fang and together they embark on a journey guided by Trip to a sacred temple located on the enchanting Northstar Islands. Inside the temple, a captivating mural unveils the ancient legend of the legendary dragon, a crucial element Eggman needs to execute his scheme successfully. Upon reaching their destination, Eggman eagerly tries to recreate the majestic creature by sketching it, but alas, his artistic endeavor results in a comically amateurish depiction resembling nothing more than a peculiar cow with wings.
Sonic Superstars[]
The Dragon remains absent from the game's storyline until the very end, known as the Last Story. At this point, it somehow manages to break free from the alternate dimension it was banished to and sets its sights on wreaking havoc in Sonic's world. However, Sonic, utilizing his powerful Super Form, rises up to the challenge and successfully defeated the formidable creature. To ensure the Dragon's permanent imprisonment, Trip takes action by sealing it within a large, magnificent purple gem.
Power and Abilities[]
The Black Dragon possesses the remarkable capability to take flight, gracefully soaring through the skies with the aid of its expansive wings. Furthermore, this awe-inspiring creature showcases its extraordinary power by launching fiery boulders from its formidable jaws, instilling fear and awe in all who witness its might. Astonishingly, the Black Dragon also possesses the ability to unleash devastating laser beams, further solidifying its dominance and leaving its adversaries in a state of sheer astonishment.
Furthermore, the main capability of this entity appears to revolve around its ability to manipulate either space or gravity. Evidently, its mere presence has resulted in the occurrence of gravitational abnormalities and incredibly potent black holes. These black holes are so formidable that even Super Sonic, who possesses immense speed and agility, was unable to evade their pull without resorting to the aid of the Super Sonic Boost.

Trivia[]
- It is believed that the Black Dragon was created as a sort of nod off of lore exclusive to the Japanese version of Sonic 3, where it is stated that Knuckles mistakes the Death Egg for the egg of a dragon, said to cause misfortune for all. This idea would have served as the game's true final boss, but was ultimately scrapped.
- It is theorized that the Black Dragon may be connected in some way to The End due to the mural found in the ruins that Eggman, Fang, and Trip explore in the prologue showing a purplish gemstone in the center of it containing the dragon. Additionally, it is speculated that the purple moon-like object that appears in Egg Fortress is The End's moon incarnation, but that is debunked.
- It has also been speculated to be connected to Dark Gaia due to the creature's color scheme, especially in its second phase, where it obtains a bluish glow, but his has yet to be confirmed or disproven.
