The Black Guerrilla Family is a criminal organization that acts as a supporting antagonist in the film An Innocent Man. It is based on really existing African-American street gang founded in 1966 and founded by the activist George Jackson.
Role[]
In the film the gang is described as one of the most dangerous criminal factions in the prison where Jimmy Rainwood - the protagonist of the film - was locked up for a crime he did not commit. Butcher - one of the inmates who befriended Jimmy - refers to them as "some nasty old bucks": they have the habit of targeting inmates for no particular reason, pursuing them with mocking and increasingly heavy abuse (from extortion to beating), until gang rape and probably even murder) and in the film Jimmy becomes their latest victim.
Taking advantage of Jimmy's initial ignorance of prison life, Jingles - the leader of the BGF gang, forcibly takes Jimmy's commissary purchases. After the gang assaults Jimmy and further threatens to sodomize him (Jimmy decides not to report the two incidents and gets into trouble for not reporting the incident). At first very hesitant and reluctant about murdering them in retaliation as per Butcher's urging, Jingle and his BGF thugs' harassment of Jimmy becomes increasingly more intense and taxing. Eventually Jimmy comes to the realization that he has to confront the thugs and produce a casualty: only then BGF thugs would leave him in peace.
Under the recommendation/tutelage/scheme of fellow inmates Butcher and Virgil Cane, both are hardened inmates, Jimmie gets a makeshift shiv and confronts Jingles solo while Cane and Butcher work together to isolate the rest of BGF thugs. Jimmy, still having doubts, hesitates to kill Jingles and the thug finds it laughable, attacks Jimmy. But Jimmy finds the courage to react in time, shoves his shiv into Jingles' stomach, killing the evil thug.
Although Jimmy spends three months in a windowless, subterranean solitary confinement (even though it is never proven he did the deed) for his trouble, The remaining BGF thugs in prison no longer bothered Jimmy. When Jimmy is ultimately released to the general population after serving three years based on a good behavior since the incident, he is received as a minor hero's thanks for ridding the prison of Jingles. And the remaining members of BGF on the street no longer bothered him.
