~ Black Hand explaining his abilities, while attempting to murder Tom Townsend/Captain Flag |
The Black Hand is the main antagonist of the Captain Flag comic series by MLJ later known as Archie Comics. He is a psychopathic terrorist and Nazi collaborator, along with being the archenemy of the titular superhero whose father he killed. He is named after the black right hand he holds, carrying a disease that can painfully kill his enemies and leave them as blackened corpse.
History[]
The Black Hand kidnaps the father of Tom Townsend, later known as Captain Flag, John Townsend, torturing him so he will know the locations of the bomb sightings. Using rats to bite off chunks of his flesh, John still refused to talk. Black Hand has his minions kidnapped his son when he was heading home drunk, bringing him to his lair and shown him his tortured father. He ties Tom up, attempting to kill his with his diseased right-hand until his father attacked him to save his son. Out of anger, The Black Hand strangled John to death, reducing his body to a blackened disease-ridden corpse, and tried to do the same with Tom. But an eagle swooped in and saved him, bringing him to a mountain to nurse him back to health.
The Black Hand and his minions goes off to carry out many acts of terrorism and sabotage, killing many innocent people left and right. Until one day, he successfully stole the plans for a bomb sighting and plans to give them to the Nazis. It wasn't until Tom, now the vigilante Captain Flag, swooped in to stop his plans. Black Hand tries to kill him with an explosive, but Flag used it against him, destroying his base but it was not the last we see of The Black Hand.
He would become a recurring arch-foe for Captain Flag, returning in the next issue breaking out Nazi war criminals from Canadian prisons. Captain Flag received help from FBI agent Veronica Darnell in stopping him, putting the Nazis back in prison as Black Hand escapes. He would later try to poison every factory worker by contaminating their air conditioners with a deadly germ that slowly kills them, then tries to steal the radium they needed to cure themselves. He ends up framing Captain Flag for the murder of one of the workers during all of this too. Once this was foiled by again Captain Flag, he escapes to fight him another day.
He would try to locate the lost treasure of the Poet Pirate, stealing his "Book of Verses" from the museum which contained the map. He and Flag would go on a race for the map, he was foiled and Flag learned there was no treasure to begin with. Meaning all the killings and search as for nothing. Black Hand was presumed dead as he nearly drowned at the bottom of the sea thanks to Captain Flag, but he was saved by crewmen of a ship who nursed him back to health. He kills one of their members, but a storm struck and killed everyone save for him. He would go back to dry land, and become a pirate, forming a crew of vicious thugs to raid ships and steal their loot. He would then confront Captain Flag one last time, who bested him and killed all of Black Hand's minions with explosives. Black Hand would soon be executed via hanging, ending him and concluded the series.

His next appearance he changes to look more like a normal looking man with a mustache, and slick hair.
