William Derek Hand, also known as Black Hand, is a supporting antagonist in the DC Universe, specifically serving as a major antagonist in the Green Lantern franchise.

William Hand was a death-obsessed man that was brought back from the dead to end all life in the universe. He is one of the members of the Black Lantern Corps. Once a minor villain with little significance, he became a dangerous force to be reckoned with after he became Black Lantern, co-leading them alongside Nekron.

Overview[]

Black Hand suffers from a case of necrophilia (meaning he has odd sexual behaviors with the dead). His rotting brain leads him to have brain damage as well as led to his insanity. Black Hand would try to end everything if including himself, and has an obsessive compulsion towards death and has a hatred toward life. After obtaining an energy draining weapon from Atrocitous, he set fort to bring about the Blackest Night.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

William Hand was born into a wealth family who resided in California, and was raised there alongside his brothers David, Peter, and Joe. He was considered the black sheep of the Hand family, and was treated harshly by his brothers who were treated better by his parents. William turned to crime due to his family wealth, and went from pickpocketing to committing large felonies as he started to create a "black book" on how to succeed as a criminal. William was also a genius and noted inventor, creating a device that allowed him to absorb the quantities of the Green Lantern's power ring. Early in his career he tended to speak in cliches and/or rhyme,to Hal Jordan/Green Lantern's great annoyance.

During a time when Hal's girlfriend Carol Ferris was temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, Hand lured her to an island community on the promise of a cure; then held her hostage. Hand had used sophisticated brainwashing techniques to turn the island's populace against Green Lantern. Oliver Queen/Green Arrow rescued him by recharging the Power Ring and slipping it to Hal.

Infinite Crisis Origins[]

After the events of Infinite Crisis, William's origins were altered with him being obsessed with death at an early age, as his parents owned a funeral home. His family learned of his obsession after he committed taxidermy on the family dog, and he was taken to psychiatrists to help get over his obsession. When Atrocitus sought him, William stole a weapon that the Red Lantern had as the Green Lanterns Hal Jordan and Sinestro stopped the supervillain. After taking the weapon, Hand committed his first murder, and became obsessed with erasing the light of the Green Lantern.

The New 52[]

Black Hand was a forced member of the Indigo Tribe until he was set free of the power ring's control, and committed suicide to escape from his power ring. After jumping off a cliff, William became a Black Lantern, with his black lantern ring emerging from his mouth.

Powers and Abilities[]

Black Hand has the ability to resurrect the dead, drain the life out anything he touches and even possession. He was also noted to be a brilliant genius, creating a "black book" on how a criminal could succeed by his methods.

Black Hand appears in DC Universe Online, voiced by Gray Haddock, who also voiced Locus in Red vs. Blue, Roman Torchwick and White Fang Lieutenant in RWBY and RWBY Chibi.
Black Hand appears as a playable character in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, voiced by Liam O'Brien, who also voiced Infinite in Sonic Forces, Zazz in Sonic: Lost World, Gaara in Naruto, Sanctus in Devil May Cry 4, Gill in Street Fighter, and Red Skull in the Marvel Animated Universe.

Trivia[]

In early comics, Black Hand had a tendency to break the fourth wall to explain his plans and cliche villainy.
He was created by the late John Broome and the late Gil Kane.
