The Black Hand is the overarching antagonist of Glitch Production horror-comedy series The Gaslight District. It is an enigmatic being that was discovered through humanity's hubris. It now gives eternal life to those that worship it and wear its symbol on their bodies, albeit with the drawback of eternally decaying. However, a prophecy dictates that its powers could be negated by the appearance of a human, causing the Rotlings that serve it to live in fear of that occasion.

Appearance[]

The Black Hand does not make a physical appearance in the show, but it's presence is conveyed with an ancient rune that resembles a five-fingered hand with a green eye in it's palm.

Biography[]

A long time ago, humanity uncovered the Black Hand and would begin worshiping it. One day, the Black Hand would gift anyone who worships it eternal life, and it seemingly caused the end of the world by unleashing a cataclysmic flood that left only the residents of the Gaslight District to survive. Over thousands of years, humanity would be bent, twisted, and misshapen into the Rotlings as the Black Hand began to be interwoven within their culture. The Rotlings would inscribe its symbol into giant black obelisks that it can seemingly look through, and they would even get tattoos of the Black Hand symbol.

However, a prophecy arose that predicts that a human born from an Angel's egg that will seemingly bring an end to the Black Hand and rob the Rotlings of eternal life. Prophets would preach in the streets in fear of the human and warn the Rotlings of the prophecy.

Trivia[]

  • The Black Hand's symbol might be a reference to the Mark of the Beast, a that the Antichrist is said to place upon his followers during the end times.
    • An inscription on the Black Hand's obelisk also describes the Black Hand's mark as a curse that binds the recipient's soul to their body, granting them faux immortality. As the Antichrist is believed to bring a false salvation, it is implied that the Black Hand may be the series's version of the Antichrist, taking advantage of the Rotling's hedonism to empower itself.
  • It is unknown if the Black Hand is truly sentient or even if it has a direct personality. Yet we do know it exists since we see it instantly revive Rotlings when they get killed from getting shot at or drowning.
  • One of the Black Hand inscriptions says that God is dead and it was killed by the Black Hand.
