The Black Legion are one of the main antagonists of Warhammer 40,000, serving as the primary antagonists within the Chaos Marines. Originally known as the Luna Wolves and later the Sons of Horus, they are notorious and reviled for being the very first of the traitor legions, lead by the usurper of the Heresy Horus himself. As the Sons of Horus they were among the 20 original Space Marine legions of the universe and were considered the most powerful legion of all, achieving incredible fame and glory across countless battlefields under their Primarch in the name of the Imperium. Their power and elite skill remained long after their betrayal, now the strongest of the Traitor Legions and lead by Abaddon the Despoiler in their crusade to bring chaos to the cosmos.
History[]
Back when they were called the Luna Wolves, eons ago, the Black Legion was among the most elite and dangerous of the Space Marines. Demonstrating fierce aggression on the battlefield due to their gene-seed of Horus Lupercal, they were the Emperor's preferred shock troopers sent to bring a swift if violent end to conflicts. When Horus was found and recovered, they changed their name in honor of their Primarch and became the XVIth legion of the Imperium of Man; The Sons of Horus.
When the time of the Horus Heresy came, the Sons of Horus followed their Primarch into revolt and became the first of the Heretics. For nine years, they lead the traitorous charge against the Imperium of Man bringing about death, destruction, and most importantly Chaos, to the galaxy, laying waste to everything in their path. At the climax of the terrible civil war, Horus was slain, and the 16th Legion had utter defeat imminent. They were then saved by Abaddon who took the reigns and swore vengeance for his once beloved father and Primarch. However, Abaddon came to harbor extreme rage and even disgust towards Horus for both his failure and his daemonic corruption, so much so that he cast away the past of the Sons of Horus entirely and devoted themselves completely to Chaos Undivided, forsaking their name and becoming the Black Legion.
