Strong, yes. But it seems you are not fit to wield my power. It's a shame, too. I was just starting to like you.
~ Black Lotus to Zero.

Black Lotus is the overarching antagonist of Red vs. Blue: Zero. He is an alien construct that guards the Ultimate Power, a golden suit of armor that gives its user unimaginable strength.

Biography[]

It is unknown who or what designated Black Lotus to watch over the Ultimate Power, but based on his dialogue as well as previous information given by another alien AI (Santa in the Chorus Trilogy), it is likely that Black Lotus is one of the alien constructs assigned to watch over artifacts meant for worthy humans. However, Black Lotus appears to be something more than an AI fragment, as it has a more corporeal form and has greater control over a human who uses the artifact he guards. He is implied to not enjoy his role since he references being "stuck in a cage".

When Zero finds the helmet for the armor, Black Lotus allows him to wield the Ultimate Power, observing his strength and mettle. Despite Zero easily taking on Shatter Squad, Black Lotus is unimpressed with Zero, taunting him as he loses control of the armor's power. After Shatter Squad manages to take down Zero, Black Lotus emerges from the armor, condescendingly commending Shatter Squad for their efforts despite being humans. Black Lotus, now experiencing freedom for the first time in eons, decides to save Zero's life, but vaguely indicates he has much bigger plans for Zero and fuses with the armor, transporting both of them away.

Trivia[]

  • Black Lotus seems to be a combination of the AI fragments used by Project Freelancer and the alien AI constructs that guard the temples throughout Chorus; Black Lotus is an alien construct, but is able to attach itself inside a suit of armor like with the AI used by freelancers.
  • Given his vague words, malevolent aura and desire for freedom, Black Lotus was theorized to return in a future season in a larger role. However, with the Shatter Squad storyline being scrapped and a final season in the works returning to the original Blood Gulch crew, Black Lotus is unlikely to return in any capacity, revealing that Red vs. Blue: Zero, alongside The Shisno Trilogy, were just simulations created by Epsilon shortly before his death in The End, meaning that Black Lotus is also a simulation as well.
