Why do we always have to clean up a mess the grunts can't handle?
~ A Male Assassin in Half-Life: Opposing Force complaining about the HECU's apparent incompetence.

The Black Operations, better known as just Black Ops and sometimes hyphenated to Black-Ops, are supporting antagonists in the 1998 first-person shooter game Half-Life, the first installment in Valve Corporation's franchise of the same name and one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside the Xen Creatures) of its 1999 expansion pack, Half-Life: Opposing Force.

They are a group of trained government assassins sent to kill all living things in the Black Mesa Research Facility and destroy the base with a nuke. They also seem to work independently.

They are divided into two classes: Female Assassins and Male Assassins.

Mission[]

They are sent by the US Government to kill every creature in the Black Mesa Research Facility, whether they are Black Mesa personnel, HECU soldiers, or aliens (the Xen Creatures or Race X), and place a thermonuclear bomb inside the parking garage of the facility. The bomb's detonation is activated during the final cut scene in Half Life: Opposing Force.

Appearance[]

Every Black Ops Assassin is covered in a black suit from head to toe. Each gender can be distinguished by the types of clothes that they wear. Female Assassins wear black spandex jumpsuits and carry microphones as headsets. All of them wear night vision goggles. Male Assassins wear black combat gear and balaclavas. Some of them wear night vision goggles, whereas the rest have exposed eyes. Unlike their female counterparts, Male Assassins wear earpieces inside their masks.

Tactics[]

The Black Ops rely on stealth instead of brute force. They are almost completely silent during combat, refusing to yell whenever injured. They are also quick and able to jump very high. Most of the Assassins are equipped with SMGs with grenade attachments. Some Male Assassins use sniper rifles as an alternative weapon. Female Assassins have cloaking devices that allow them to become partially invisible. Up close, Assassins use punches and martial arts kicks as melee attacks.

Relationships[]

HECU[]

The Black Ops has a covertly hostile relationship with the HECU. Both sides seem to be allied in the first Half-Life game due to AI not having the two fight one another. The Black Ops' existence and role are expanded in Opposing Force, however. They are sent to eliminate all witnesses of the Black Mesa incident, including HECU marines, and destroy the Black Mesa compound after the HECU fail to contain the Resonance Cascade. Upon arrival, every Assassin either kills or interrogates an HECU soldier. They consider the HECU to be incompetent and inept. A Male Assassin even states resentment for taking care of the HECU's responsibility.

The Black Ops will always attack Adrian Shephard and anyone following him.

Gordon Freeman[]

Although Gordon Freeman has relatively few encounters with them, Female Assassins respond with hostility towards him. This is due to the females' protocol, prompting Gordon to fight back and kill several of them.

Trivia[]

  • The Black Ops are the only human faction in the Black Mesa Incident to not have a spinoff game centered on them. A Half-Life mod, known as Half-Life: Opposing Force: Ultimate Attack, was made by a fan disappointed by this. Another mod with a Black Ops protagonist called Half-Life: Dark Matter is also in development.
  • Female Assassins appear both in the original Half-Life game and its expansion, Opposing Force. Male Assassins appear only in Opposing Force.
  • The Black Ops do not appear at all in Blue Shift, due to Barney Calhoun escaping fairly early in the incident.
  • Compared to the HECU, the Black Ops have very little dialogue.
  • The Female Assassins, by default, have jiggle physics in their breasts. This is completely removed in Opposing Force, the PlayStation 2 port of the game, and any version of the game released in a country where censorship is heavy, such as Germany at the time of release.
  • It's suggested that the Black Ops are CIA by promotional material, which is true in the files.
