Background
The Mrs. W's (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who) are billions of years old, and Mrs. Whatsit was once a star that sacrificed herself as a supernova or nova to continue the fight against the Black Thing.
A Wrinkle in Time
Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin land on the hospitable planet Uriel in a distant galaxy. There, the Mrs. W's show them the Black Thing, which is in the form of a dark cloud. Calvin instantly shows dislike upon seeing it. He asks what it is, and Mrs. Whatsit reveals that it is simply evil, the powers of darkness.
The Black Thing is the personification of evil fought all over in the universe. Some homeworlds have achieved victory over it, but others have succumbed to it. Planets that have succumbed to the Black Thing, like Camazotz (which It rules over), are known as dark planets. Earth, however, is described by the Mrs. W's as being “shadowed” and “fighting the shadow”, but not fully taken over by it; from the Earth, great artists, philosophers, religious figures, and scientists have fought the Black Thing.
