What could there be about a shadow… that would chill her with a fear that was beyond shuddering, beyond crying or screaming, beyond the possibility of comfort?
~ Meg's thoughts on the Black Thing.
Calvin: But what is it? We know that it's evil, but what is it?
Mrs. Which: Yyouu hhave ssaidd itt! Itt iss Eevil. Itt iss thee Ppowers of Ddarrkkness!
~ Mrs. Which about the Black Thing.

The Black Thing is the overarching antagonist of the Time Quintet series, appearing only in the novel A Wrinkle in Time. Nothing is known about the Black Thing, other than it is a cosmic force as well as the incarnation of evil, and is insinuated to be It's master.

History

Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin land on the hospitable planet Uriel in a distant galaxy. There, Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who show them the Black Thing, which is in the form of a dark cloud. Calvin instantly shows dislike upon seeing it. He asks what it is, and Mrs. Whatsit reveals that it is simply evil, the powers of darkness.

The Black Thing is the personification of evil fought all over in the universe. Some homeworlds have achieved victory over it, but others have succumbed to it. Planets that have succumbed to the Black Thing, like Camazotz (which It rules over), are known as dark planets. Earth is described by the ladies as being “shadowed” and “fighting the shadow”, but not fully taken over by it.
