All is fair in this business. Because our business is war.
~ Blackjack's famous quote.

Blackjack is a major character in the 2013 video game Killzone: Mercenary.

He is a highly mysterious weapons dealer and the owner of Blackjack Armories, who provides high-end weapons to a number of different organisations, including the Helghast Military, Interplanetary Strategic Alliance and subsequently the Phantom Talon Corp, in order to profit off from the Second Extrasolar War, making him an unscrupulous key figure in the war.

He is voiced by Trevor White.

Appearance[]

Blackjack's face is often obscured in his appearances in Mercenary. He is seen wearing a pair of black sunglasses, rings in his right hand, a watch and a black business outfit.

Personality[]

Charismatic and enigmatic, the Blackjack is known for his business ingenuity, who seems to be more intent on profiting the war by arming various mercenary groups for his own gain with one purpose: money. He goes so far in arming both sides for unscrupulous reasons other than profit.

Despite his unscrupulous nature, the Blackjack has shown to have some semblance of standards, as such when he shows disgust over the Helghast and Kratek for experimenting on fellow Helghast civilians for the Eschaton Virus, as well as with Grey who attempted to destroy Helghan with the Virus in an attempt to end the war.

Background[]

Past Life[]

Blackjack was born from Earth's Eastern European region in the late 2220s, which was one of the colonies settled by migrants. He was described as "a bright but rebellious child, with a precocious talent for technology" when he was a teenager.

The name "Blackjack" eventually came to be linked with criminal groups operating mostly on the black market in the outlying colonies. Blackjack gained notoriety early on for carrying out a number of prominent cyberattacks against Earth authorities.

Blackjack took advantage of the conflict that erupted between Earth and the outer colonies to establish contacts with both colonial warlords and weaponry dealers. He first started off by providing weapons for other minor colonial conflicts, but he quickly established a reputation as a high-ranking supplier of advanced weapons to military personnel.

Killzone Mercenary[]

Blackjack worked as an underground weapons dealer for many mercenary groups, especially the Phantom Talon Corp, during the Helghast attack on Southern Vekta. Blackjack was believed to have preferred Arran Danner, one of Phantom's mercenaries. Throughout his time in Phantom, Danner would repeatedly ask for Blackjack's weapons collection.

Blackjack "defected" to the Helghast, but after helping Danner, he finally slipped under the ISA's radar. Blackjack helped Danner complete his objectives because he believed that his demise and the deployment of the Eschaton Virus would be "bad for business", rather than the genuine threat it poses to humanity. Via hacking into his communications, he gave Danner more information to help assure his life and assisted him in defeating Vyktor Kratek, who intended to renege on Danner as soon as his usefulness wore out. When Danner defeated his former ally and archenemy Anders Benoit, Blackjack commandeered Kratek's Overlord from a distance in order to get Danner and Justus Harkin out of Facility X01 before it catches fire. He urged Danner to destroy the virus.

Blackjack ultimately proved that his genuine motivation was profit, as it usually is, and not the true desire to end the war for a good measure. There would not be an instant end to the war thanks to the deaths of Grey, Kratek, and Benoit as well as the eradication of the virus. Blackjack started making money right after after Pyrrhus was destroyed by nuclear war by, among other things, selling anti-radiation medications he had 'conveniently' stocked up. Following that, Blackjack employed his knowledge and resources to maintain Danner and Justus's secrecy while they were on the run by expunging all of the info related to them.

Trivia[]

  • He possesses the technological know-how to remove a person's identify from the UCA and ISA databanks, as seen at the game's conclusion when he removed Danner and Justus from the ISA's radar.
  • Along with Justus and Benoit, he was one of the few characters seen in Killzone: Mercenary's live-action trailer.
