Blight is the central supernatural antagonist in Episode Ten: EXTIRPATE, a parasitic swarm of intelligent insects that embodies ancient horror, replication, and apocalyptic potential.

Appearance[]

Blight is a parasitic entity composed of a vast swarm of small, black, insect-like drones. Each individual unit resembles a bee-sized creature with sharp mandibles, translucent wings, and a glossy carapace. While individually fragile, the swarm operates as a single, intelligent organism capable of rapid, coordinated movement and grotesque transformations.

Swarm Form[]

In its natural state, Blight appears as a chaotic cloud of chittering insects, moving with eerie precision. The swarm can flow like smoke, surge like a tidal wave, or scatter into the shadows. It emits a low, droning hum when in motion, often accompanied by the sound of clicking mandibles and fluttering wings.

Humanoid Manifestation[]

Blight can coalesce into a humanoid figure, mimicking the shape of a person but composed entirely of writhing insects. This form is used for communication and intimidation. The figure lacks facial features but may form vague impressions of eyes or a mouth when speaking. Its movements are fluid yet unnatural, as if puppeteered by instinct rather than anatomy.

Infected Hosts[]

Victims of Blight exhibit grotesque physical changes. Infected bodies swell, twitch, and eventually rupture as insects burst forth. Some reanimate briefly, their eyes blackened and movements jerky, before collapsing into a nest of crawling drones. The transformation is rapid and horrifying, often accompanied by screams and the sound of internal churning.

Environmental Effects[]

Blight’s presence alters its surroundings. The air grows thick and humid, shadows deepen, and surfaces become slick with a resinous secretion. Light sources flicker or dim in its proximity, and torches or firelight cast distorted silhouettes of the swarm’s movements.

Biography[]

Blight claims to have lived alongside dragons and leviathans, adapting over millennia to avoid detection by humans. It was ultimately defeated and imprisoned by a Roman warrior known only as “Lucius Varus,” who sealed it beneath Monte Cassino alongside the remains of Roman soldiers. The entity remained dormant until March 1944, when Allied bombardment during World War II disturbed its prison.

A patrol from the Second New Zealand Division discovered the hidden chamber and inadvertently released Blight. The entity infected German paratroopers and began reanimating the dead. Captain Nathaniel Davie sacrificed himself to lure Blight into the open, where it was annihilated by Allied artillery.

Personality[]

Blight exhibits a complex and unsettling personality that blends ancient intelligence with predatory instinct. Though composed of countless insect drones, it operates as a unified hive mind capable of strategic thought, negotiation, and emotional manipulation.

Blight is highly intelligent, with memory spanning millennia. It recalls living alongside dragons and leviathans, adapting to survive firestorms and lightning. Its speech—delivered through a humanoid swarm form—is articulate and laced with contempt for humanity, suggesting a long history of observation and disdain. It recognizes threats like fire and light, avoids direct confrontation when necessary, and exploits psychological weaknesses in its victims.

Blight communicates with eerie calm and calculated menace. It speaks in riddles and mythic references, often invoking its ancient past to intimidate or unsettle. When negotiating with Captain Davie, it displays a transactional mindset, offering terms and honoring them—though not without a sense of superiority. Its tone is regal, almost priestly, as if it sees itself as a divine force rather than a mere predator.

While not emotional in a human sense, Blight expresses a form of pride and vengeance. It resents its long imprisonment and views its reawakening as a rightful return. It shows no remorse for the suffering it causes, instead reveling in the replication and reanimation of its victims. Its desire to spread and consume is framed not as hunger, but as destiny.

Blight’s personality reflects themes of buried trauma, mythic contagion, and the cyclical nature of violence. It is not chaotic—it is methodical, ancient, and patient. Its intelligence elevates it from monster to myth, embodying the idea that some evils are not mindless but deeply aware, waiting for the right moment to return.

Powers and Abilities[]

Blight possesses a range of supernatural and parasitic abilities that make it a formidable apex predator. Its power set blends biological horror with mythic intelligence, allowing it to adapt, infect, and manipulate both environments and victims.

Hive Intelligence[]

Blight operates as a unified swarm with collective consciousness. It can strategize, negotiate, and learn from its surroundings, displaying intelligence far beyond instinctual behavior. This hive mind allows it to coordinate attacks, form humanoid shapes, and communicate with eerie precision.

Assimilation and Infection[]

Blight’s primary method of reproduction is parasitic. It invades living or dead hosts, rapidly transforming their bodies into incubation chambers. Victims swell, twitch, and rupture as new drones emerge. Some reanimate briefly, controlled by the swarm, before collapsing into nests of crawling insects.

Adaptation[]

Blight has survived for millennia by evolving in response to threats. It recalls enduring firestorms, lightning, and ancient predators like dragons and leviathans. This adaptability makes it resistant to conventional containment and capable of surviving extreme conditions.

Shapeshifting[]

The swarm can coalesce into a humanoid figure composed entirely of insects. This form is used for intimidation and communication. Though featureless, it mimics human posture and speech, often forming vague impressions of eyes or a mouth when speaking.

Environmental Manipulation[]

Blight’s presence alters its surroundings. The air becomes humid and oppressive, shadows deepen, and surfaces grow slick with resinous secretion. Light sources flicker or dim, and firelight casts distorted silhouettes of the swarm’s movements.

Vulnerabilities[]

Despite its power, Blight is vulnerable to fire and light. These elements can repel or destroy individual drones, disrupt swarm cohesion, and prevent infection. Torches and artillery were key to its temporary defeat during World War II.
