~ Blitzwing to a football coach.

Blitzwing is a major antagonist in the Transformers franchise. He is a Decepticon warrior and one of the few Triple Changers. In most incarnations he transforms into a jet and a tank.

Blitzwing was voiced by the late Ed Gilbert in the cartoon, and Dave Boat in Transformers: Devastation.

Biography[]

Generation 1[]

In the original cartoon, Blitzwing was a treacherous soldier who tried to overthrow Megatron on a few occasions. Each time he proved to be incompetent. He is considered a great threat by the Autobots. He and Devastator once tried to overthrow Megatron as the leaders, but then he teamed up with Megatron, Starscream, and Astrotrain to defeat Devastator. In the episode Prime Target, he and Astrotrain were sent to bring in the Autobots that were captured by Lord Chumley, a British human poacher planning on capturing Optimus.

Blitzwing and Astrotrain had fallen into the electrocution trap of a robot scorpion set up by the British human poacher and were locked up in chains. When they promised the British human poacher they would fight Optimus Prime, they instead tried to kill the human poacher as revenge. However, Astrotrain and Blitzwing retreated when the Autobots were freed and were trying to attack them. Blitzwing was one of the few survivors of The Transformers: The Movie, as unlike most Transformers he was not replaced. His most prominent moment in the movie was where he was in tank mode trying to kill Rodimus and Daniel Witwicky until Kup got handle of his gun, causing him to instead shoot Shrapnel, who fell into Blitzwing, rolling him off the mountain.

In the fifth part of Five Faces of Darkness, he teamed up with Rodimus to warn Galvatron not to turn on a switch that was built by the Quintessons. The Quintessons tricked Galvatron to turn on the switch which froze every Transformer in the universe. However, Spike Witwicky used Rodimus's gun to destroy the control panel that functioned the switch, remobilizing every Transformer. Rodimus, Blitzwing, and Galvatron tried to chase the Quintessons who escaped in a rocket. Galvatron threatened to kill Rodimus with his gun before Blitzwing aimed his gun at Galvatron and ordered him to leave. Galvatron claimed that Blitzwing will suffer for this unimaginably.

Though being exiled on the Decepticon cause, Blitzwing is still seen in many further episodes as a background character.

Marvel Comics[]

Blitzwing was introduced in the UK-exclusive story "Target: 2006" as one of the Decepticons on Cybertron targeted by the Wreckers for their attempt to eliminate the deadliest killers. The ambush failed when most of the number were summoned to Earth by Megatron. Blitzwing would remain on Cybertron, being seen among the troops serving Straxus and Ratbat, until he made his Marvel US debut in Issue #29. He, Octane and Astrotrain travelled to Earth to supervise a shipment for Ratbat's latest plan only to find the ship had been infected by Scraplets, who also infected the three Decepticons and the Autobot Blaster. When Goldbug and the Throttlebots learned the infection could be cured by water, they were forced to cure Blitzwing and the others so they could help fight the Scraplets, allowing the Decepticons to retrieve the shipment.

Blitzwing and the others joined up with the Earth Decepticons, which soon after came under the control of Ratbat. He took part in the assault on the Autobots gathered on the moon in Issue #41, which he was defeated by Grimlock. During the Underbase Saga, he was involved in the battle with Scorponok's Decepticon faction, fighting Horri-Bull. He made his last appearance in Issue #50, when Starscream absorbed the power of the Underbase, leading to an alliance between the two Decepticon groups and the Autobots to defend Earth from him. Blitzwing was part of the team led by Fortress Maximus and Soundwave that defended Buenos Aires, and was killed by Starscream along with most of the others there.

The post-movie version of the character appeared in "The Legacy of Unicron", taking part in the massive assault against the Autobots on Cybertron, and "Space Pirates", where he was one of the senior Decepticons Soundwave recruited for an attack on the Autobots who instead ended up fighting the Quintessons alongside them.

In Marvel UK's Earthforce storyline, Blitzwing first appeared in "The Bad Guys' Ball" at the Enclave between Megatron and Shockwave's Decepticon groups. In "Secrets", he and the other Triple Changers joined Shockwave in ambushing Megatron and stealing a shipment. He made his last appearance in "Manoeuvres", where he and Astrotrain went to the aid of Octane after he became trapped in a weapons testing range with a full fuel tank. However, they abandoned him on discovering he had ended up there by harassing human cars for fun, not realising one of them was Jazz.
