BoJack F. Horseman is the titular main protagonist as well as the self antagonist of the adult animated series BoJack Horseman. He is an anthropomorphic horse and actor who struggles with various mental illnesses and drug addictions.
Despite being the protagonist, BoJack has committed numerous misdeeds over the course of the series, causing him to veer into villain territory.
He was voiced by Will Arnett, who also voiced The Lone Gunslinger in Ice Age: The Meltdown, Vlad Vladikoff in Horton Hears a Who!, and Slade in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
Biography
BoJack F. Horseman was born on January 2nd, 1964 to Beatrice and Butterscotch Horseman. When BoJack was just a little baby, his parents, while both trying their damndest to be good parents to their son, would get into heated arguments with each other over their financial situation but they both made sure not to take out their anger on the baby, although Beatrice struggled with this. One night, BoJack kept his parents up all night with his crying and after another heated argument with Butterscotch, Beatrice took some pills with vodka, making her drunk enough to direct her first slight toward her son, saying "You'd better be worth all this."
Throughout BoJack's childhood, Beatrice and Butterscotch would regularly be at each other's throats in front of BoJack, to the point where their fighting was just an everyday routine for him. Both of his parents were verbally and emotionally abusive to him. His mother would always berate and demean him, never saying or doing a single kind thing for him, while his father would insult everything he ever made such as his treehouse to his father's day card. BoJack would usually sit quietly and refrain from interjecting or responding to them. The reason for his quietness was most likely because he was waiting for them to change their ways and do something nice for him once, as he explained in "Free Churro".
Little has been explained about BoJack's social life as a child, as there has never been any mention of his friends. While it can be inferred that BoJack had no friends as a kid, it has also been shown more than once that he used to play soccer, meaning that he must have at least had some kind of bond with his teammates.
With a cold and distant family and little to nothing else to do, BoJack spent most of his childhood watching TV. His long exposure to various different movies and shows may have fueled his mindset for becoming an actor, himself. BoJack especially idolized Secretariat and wanted to be just like him when he grew up. In "Later", a flashback to his childhood showed BoJack watching Secretariat's appearance on a talk show, where the host read BoJack's fanmail to him. BoJack excitedly watched as Secretariat read his fan mail and awaited a response. Secretariat began to respond to BoJack's fanmail with some motivational advice but at this time, Butterscotch came home from work angry and got into a screaming match with Beatrice, so BoJack was unable to hear what Secretariat was trying to say to him.
Appearance
BoJack Horseman is a brown horse that is a crossbreed of a grade and a thoroughbred. He has a brown mane, a white diamond on his forehead, and a white and pink nose. BoJack's usual attire consists of a blue sweater with a bunch of "X"s on it, a gray jacket, teal pants, and white and candy-colored sneakers.
Personality
BoJack Horseman is a washed-up celebrity, who suffers from depression and melancholy over his former TV series, "Horsin' Around", getting canceled and his popularity declining overtime. With absolutely nothing to do, BoJack spends most of his time drinking, smoking, and having sex with multiple women. He doesn't necessarily need to work anymore, given the fact that he still has millions of dollars in the bank, from his heyday in the '90s. Despite this, he is still employed as an actor, and his agent, Princess Carolyn, knowing that he wishes he was famous again, is always trying to find him new roles, which he almost always declines. Despite having an exterior appearance of being an egotistical narcissist, BoJack is deep-down, very self-loathing, hating himself not only for not being famous any more but also for being fat and old. This is exhibited by his constant lies about his age and what year he was born in. He also insults himself for all of the junk food he eats, yet never makes any effort to lose weight or eat healthier due to his laziness. BoJack occasionally make efforts to better himself and begin a new life, as a stronger, more useful person, in episodes such as "Brand New Couch" and "The Stopped Show", but no matter how long these improvements last, he always relapses and goes back to his old self again. "Escape From L.A." and "The Horny Unicorn", which are respective to the aforementioned episodes, where BoJack began said journeys in self-improvement. BoJack has mentioned several times that he despises himself as a person because of how bad he is. In "Horse Majeure", BoJack said that he feels as though he was "born with a leak" and that as he grew older, he lost more and more of his good personality traits, until he ended up where he is now, as a horrible, hateful horse. In "That's Too Much Man", guilt-ridden over his responsibility in the death of Sarah Lynn, BoJack claimed that he was a "toxic" person, who ruins the lives of everyone he touches. Although it seems like he's rotten to the core, moments like this show that BoJack might have some humanity, as he at least feels remorse for the way he acts and feels true empathy for the people he hurts. Most of the time, BoJack has a difficult time taking responsibility for his own actions. In "It's You", Todd pointed out that BoJack is always blaming his own villainous acts on things such as his depression, his troubled past, and his alcohol/drug addiction, when in reality, the true culprit for all of his wrongdoings is himself.
Villainous Acts
- In "BoJack Horseman: The BoJack Horseman Story: Chapter One", BoJack openly and shamelessly admits on public television that he parked in a handicapped spot. A cutaway gag later exhibits BoJack pushing a baby's stroller over and runs away like a maniac. On their date, BoJack admits to having cheated on Princess Carolyn with Emily Mortimer. When they break up, BoJack launches Princess Carolyn out of his car in a way that could have easily killed or injured her.
- In "BoJack Hates the Troops", BoJack Horseman stole a box of muffins from Neal McBeal the Navy Seal and then ate all twelve of them in one sitting, despite not wanting as little as one, just to spite him. When Neal made a public case out of BoJack stealing his food, BoJack publicly insulted him (and all other veterans) on national television. Princess Carolyn gave him a box of muffins to give to Neal as compensation but BoJack stupidly ate them all. Todd gave him a bag of stale hamburger buns to give to Neal and BoJack presented Neal with the buns and made an obviously insincere apology, where all he did was make several thinly-veiled insults against veterans.
- In "Prickly Muffin", BoJack had sex with Sarah Lynn, while she was drunk, high, and suffering internally over several personal issues. As Diane pointed out, this was BoJack taking advantage of Sarah Lynn's situation for sex. One of their sexual exploits involved Todd trying to get his blanket out from under them, only to get himself sucked into their sex, which led to him getting raped by both of them.
- In "Zoës and Zeldas", BoJack sabotaged Todd's potential career as a musician by tricking him into staying up all night, playing a video game, so that he'd be extremely tired and out of whack when trying to perform his musical for Virgil Van Cleef, making him look like an idiot in front of a bunch of aristocratic theatre critics. As Diane pointed out, BoJack was only doing this for personal reasons, as he feared the thought of being alone and needed to clip Todd's wings just to keep himself secure.
- In "Live Fast, Diane Nguyen", BoJack, along with Diane's brothers, bullied Diane.
- In "Our A-Story is a "D" Story", BoJack competed with Mr. Peanutbutter for the heart of Diane, despite him knowing that the two were a couple. He later stole the "D" from the Hollywood sign just to impress her and then lied about it and used Mr. Peanutbutter's help to cover his tracks. Also, he hung up on Todd to let him rot in jail instead of helping him.
- In "The Telescope", BoJack physically attacked a man with cancer, after screwing over his career because of his sexuality (however this was mainly due to Angela Diaz), abandoning him for around 20 years, and then coming back to his house to give him a half-assed apology, just so that he could get forgiveness from him as confirmation for all of the horrible things he did to him. Later in the episode, BoJack tried to kiss Diane without her consent, again, knowing that she was engaged to Mr. Peanutbutter at the time.
- In "Horse Majeure", BoJack forced Todd to help him sabotage Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's wedding. Things he did included forcing Todd to break into their house as well as encouraging him to swallow a cyanide pill to kill himself. When BoJack was under the impression that Todd had killed himself, he didn't care even the slightest. Another bad thing he did was hire Character Actress Margo Martindale to rob a bank and threaten Diane's life to make her give up her wedding ring.
- In "One Trick Pony", He fires Diane from being his ghostwriter just because he didn't want the mass population to see him for who he truly was.
- In "Brand New Couch", BoJack threw out his old couch, while Todd was still on it.
- In "After the Party", BoJack accidentally hit a deer with his car in the middle of the night, and instead of going to help him, he decided to keep on driving. If it wasn't for Wanda being in the car with him, demanding they go back to save him, BoJack would have certainly left the deer to die.
- In "Chickens", BoJack indirectly caused a three-car pile up by watching a advertisement on his tablet while driving.
- In "Higher Love", BoJack steals a stroller from a baby, rolls downhill and causes a car accident. He also gives his co-star Corduroy some information which would lead to his death.
- In "Let's Find Out", BoJack spites Daniel Radcliffe by intentionally failing to remember his name on the last question of Mr. Peanutbutter's first episode of Hollywoo Celebrities: What Do They Know? Do They Know Stuff? Let's Find Out. Because of this, he singlehandedly released millions of dollars into a pit of fire, getting it all destroyed, when simply guessing the answer correctly would have gotten all the money sent to a much-deserving charity.
- In "The Shot", BoJack destroys the town's cable by throwing a lit cigarette of a balcony and also broke into a museum to get the final shot for a movie he was making.
- In "Yes And", the ending has BoJake leave Hollywoo in the middle of shooting to go to New Mexico with Charlotte which leads too...
- In "Escape From L.A.", BoJack took Penny Carson, (the daughter of his long-time friend, Charlotte), to the prom and spent that night hanging out with her and her two friends Peter Pocket and Maddy Ginsberg. During that night, BoJack distributed alcohol to the minors, leading to Maddy O.D.ing and needing to go to the hospital. Not wanting to take responsibility for his actions, BoJack left Maddy's unconscious body in front of the hospital and told Pete to take her in and say that he doesn't know where she got the alcohol from so that nobody could trace it back to him. Pete was obviously hesitant to do this but BoJack demanded that he follow his orders because he was the adult. BoJack later left him at the hospital with Maddy to handle everything on his own. Later that night, BoJack tried to kiss Charlotte, even though he knew she was married to Kyle at the time. Charlotte refused to kiss him but BoJack begged her to skip town with him, which Charlotte declined. Shortly after this happened, BoJack went to his boat, where he crossed the Moral Event Horizon for the first time, preparing to have sex with Charlotte's underage daughter, Penny. (At the time, Penny was 17 and BoJack was 51). The only reason BoJack didn't go all the way with her was because Charlotte walked in on them and busted them before anything could happen.

- In "Fish Out of Water", BoJack robbed a convenience store to get some seahorse milk and a porn magazine, although this is one of his less corrupt moments considering he was looking after a baby seahorse. Then again, he also blew up a saltwater taffy factory while trying to do so.
- In "Love and/or Marriage", BoJack had took advantage of Emily and had sex with her, despite knowing that she was in a relationship with Todd.
- In "Old Acquaintance", BoJack tries to tank the spin-off series Ethan Around.
- In "Best Thing That Ever Happened", BoJack completely trashes his own restaurant Elefante, and fires Princess Carolyn just for losing the Kelsey film, the Pegasus film and Ethan Around for him.
- In "It's You", after getting drunk and destroying the entire house, BoJack woke up and admitted to Todd that he had sex with his girlfriend, while she was still dating him. This ruined his relationship with Todd, with the latter giving BoJack a well-deserved talking to about how he needs to stop blaming other people, his past, or his drug addiction on his bad actions, then permanently leaving his house.
- In "That's Too Much, Man!", BoJack quickly convinces Sarah Lynn to relapse and do drugs again after she was deep into her nine-month sobriety streak. He comes over and they both got insanely drunk and high and went on a rampage all around town, destroying everything. During this time, he crashed an A.A. meeting and detailed the story of how he went to L.A. and nearly slept with his friend Charlotte Carson's underage daughter, (Penny Carson) and even mentions her by her full name, encouraging the audience to look her up. Sarah Lynn looked up Charlotte herself and had BoJack go to Ohio so he could make amends with Penny. However, all BoJack did was make her life worse by showing up, though it was never completely clarified why. Later, BoJack and Sarah Lynn destroyed a kid's playhouse and showed zero remorse over it, then they broke into Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter's house and completely wrecked the place. When Diane and Mr. Peanutbutter walked in and saw them, BoJack knocked Diane over and broke her newly healed arm. BoJack and Sarah Lynn also break into Ana Spanakopita's house a total of three times and vandalize her artwork. In the end, Sarah Lynn drops to the ground, unable to speak, as she is suffering from a drug overdose. BoJack eventually crosses the Moral Event Horizon once again by calling the ambulance after as far as 17 minutes, sealing Sarah Lynn's fate and his identity of a toxic, manipulative monster.
- In "That Went Well", a flashback reveals that he caused Sarah Lynn to fall off the deep end by attempting to use her for rating in his failing series. In the present, he left the on Ethan Around in the middle of shooting a scene and abandoned the city, dooming the show in the process.
- In "The Old Sugarman Place", BoJack had a guy with a wrecking ball come by to destroy his grandparent's summer home, not even a full day after Eddie worked tooth and nail to repair it for him. Not caring about the destruction of such a sentimental location and the fact that he was making all of Eddie's work in vain, BoJack drove off back to L.A. mockingly, while the house was still in the middle of being destroyed right in front of poor Eddie.
- In "Commence Fracking", we learn more about some of the women BoJack slept with and never called again.
- In "Thoughts and Prayers", BoJack plans on saying "Fuck you, mom!" to his senile, elderly, amnesiac mother when he helps her regain her memory.
- In "Stupid Piece of Shit", BoJack acts completely spiteful and disrespectful to his mother, while she lives in the house with him and even throws her baby doll over the balcony, knowing that she thinks it's a real baby.
- In "Xerox of a Xerox", it's revealed that BoJack spent a total of around 17 minutes pacing the parking lot, considering whether or not to call the ambulance to save Sarah Lynn. By the time he finally called, it was too late and she officially died at the hospital. BoJack lied to the police, claiming that he had no idea where Sarah Lynn got her heroin from, despite knowing full well that it came from him, further cementing his awful reputation and his act of crossing the Moral Event Horizon.

Trivia
- BoJack Horseman weighs 1,200 pounds and stands at 6 feet and 6 inches.
- One time, at a Christmas party, BoJack Horseman sneezed on famous As the World Turns actress, Marissa Tomei. Just at this time, an unknown photographer took a picture, which has then since been used on news channels, talk shows, and other television programs, whenever they need to show a picture of him.
- A running gag in the series is for BoJack to exhibit his hatred for honeydew, despite the fact that he's never eaten honeydew before.
- In the series finale, "Nice While It Lasted", BoJack ate honeydew for the first time on a whim and ended up actually liking it.
- Another more serious running gag associated with BoJack is that once a season (sans 4 and 6), his actions and/or behavior will result in one of his friends permanently losing all respect for him and ending their relationships with him by making a passionately angered rant at him, which includes the word "fuck".
- In the Season 1 episode, "The Telescope", sometime during the 1990's, BoJack was forced to fire his best friend, Herb Kazzaz from the set of Horsin' Around, after word got out that he was gay and he became a social pariah for it. Deep down, BoJack didn't want to do this but Angela told him he had no other choice. Herb resented BoJack for firing him and his life would slowly but surely get ruined and at some point, he ended up getting rectal cancer. In 2014, BoJack and Diane went to the house of a very sick and near-death Herb Kazzaz. BoJack apologized to Herb for his actions, in a way that he thought was sincere, but as Herb pointed out, BoJack didn't actually feel sorry. He just wanted his forgiveness so that he could stop feeling back about ruining his life and have a bit of closure before he died. So ultimately, BoJack was only apologizing to make himself feel better. Herb ended this darkly introspective rant with "Now get the fuck out of my house."
- In the Season 2 episode, "Escape From L.A." a then-51-year-old BoJack took the then-17-year-old Penny Carson to bed with him and gets ready to sleep with her before Penny's mom, Charlotte walks in on them. After scolding Penny and sending her to her room, she then turns to BoJack and gives him a hate-fueled speech, where she demands that he leave her property in 30 minutes before she calls the police and lets him know that after leaving her, she never wants to see or hear from him again for the rest of her life, saying "If you EVER try to contact me or my family again, I will fucking kill you."
- In the Season 3 episode, "It's You", BoJack admits to sleeping with Todd's then-girlfriend, Emily, which led to the latter breaking up with Todd. Pissed off, Todd screams and yells at BoJack, saying that this was the last straw in their friendship and he was moving out of the house, fed up with his horrible behavior. BoJack tried to apologize and rationalize but Todd didn't want to hear it, saying that he can't keep blaming his wrongdoings on other people/things, as the only person responsible for his reckless and harmful behavior was himself. He this capped off with "Fuck, man. What else is there to say?"
- In the Season 5 episode, "The Showstopper", BoJack was instructed to pretend strangle Gina Cazador for a scene in a TV episode they were making. However, BoJack let his anger from earlier that day affect his actions, as he strangled her for real and continued to strangle her, even long after the cameras stopped rolling and the director specifically told him several times to let her go. When BoJack, all to late, finally let go, a horrified Gina, with hand-shaped bruises on her neck, looked at him with bloodshot eyes and said "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
- There are a few parallels between the dynamic of Bojack and Todd, and the dynamic Walter White and Jesse Pinkman, as well as both Jesse and Todd having the same voice actor Aaron Paul.
- Both Jesse and Todd are sidekicks to a asshole protagonist.
- Both Jesse and Todd are considered failures.
- Both Jesse and Todd are poor and often get assistance from the wealthier guy (Walter and Bojack).
- Both Walter and Bojack keep their respective sidekick around due to egotistical reasons.
- However unlike Jesse and Walt, Todd and Bojack fix their friendship and remain friends.
