Bob-Ombs are minor antagonists in the Super Mario Bros. franchise. They are usually hostile and work under the evil force of Bowser. However a group of peaceful Bob-Ombs exist.
Appearance[]
A Bob-Omb's usual appearance is a cherry-shaped bomb with two white eyes, small yellow legs and feet, a golden key on the back, and a light blue cap with a burnt wick on the top. However, Bob-Ombs didn't always look like this. they went through many changes before they landed on the modern design.
Doki Doki Panic/Super Mario Bros. 2[]
The Bob-Ombs look different in their debut. They are pictures as the same black ball, but they have pink arms, and red feet with pink legs. They can also be seen with pupils, and they have no key in their back. The weirdest part of this design is that in the artwork, the top is black, not blue. But in the game, they are missing the cap and the wick as a whole. They barely look like the same enemy.
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
The Bob-Ombs in this game lack the gold key, the cap and wick, and their feet are white. They look like a bowling ball with feet.
Super Mario World[]
While in game, they look identical to the Super Mario Bros. 3 sprite, in artwork, they look like modern Bob-Omb with a grey key and cap. This grey appearance appears in Super Mario RPG as well.
Super Mario 64[]
In the first 3D Mario game, they appear similar to the last appearance, except they lack the wick and key. Their feet are also not connected to their body. In the DS port, their limbs are connected but that's about it.
Super Mario Sunshine[]
In Super Mario Sunshine, they take an unusual appearance. They present themselves as black balls with a digital face with red, pixelated eyes. Their key is placed on top of their head and is an orangey red with a yellow outline, and their orange and yellow feet look similar to a wind-up toy. After this, they gained their modern appearance.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]
In this game, Bob-Ombs were one of victims of the invasion, who were shroobified and set to guard the sewers, they were likely wiped out after baby tears chemical was speard, like it did with Shroobs.
Personality[]
A Bob-Omb's personality is never explored (except in the RPG games), and it can be assumed that most Bob-Ombs don't even possess sentience. The most notable Bob-Omb with a personality is Admiral Bobbery, who had a wife, can feel joy, sorrow, and has a pretty standard and kind personality.
Mechanic[]
The Bob-Omb's mechanic is a simple albeit useful one. In the 2D games, a Bob-Omb wander from side-to-side of the platform they are on, similar to a red Koopa Troopa. If Mario jumps on a Bob-Omb, the Bob-Omb will start to flash pink or red, and shortly afterwards explode, hurting Mario if he is in the blast range. In the 3D games, Mario jumping on a Bob-Omb will also trigger an explosion, but a Bob-Omb can also notice Mario from a short distance and light its own wick itself. The reason this mechanic is useful is because it can break blocks. In some games, you can pick up a flashing Bob-Omb and throw it at the blocks you would like to get rid of.
Trivia[]
- Bob-Ombs do not originate from the Mario series. Doki Doki Panic was a different game entirely until it was reskinned as Super Mario Bros. 2. Shy Guys and Ninjis also originate from this game.
- Bob-Ombs are most common in airship levels.
- A Bob-Omb exists for every color of the rainbow including black, white, and red. Most of these bombs come from Paper Mario games.
