You know, Quasimodo predicted all this.
~ Bobby Baccalieri mistaking Nostradmus for Quasimodo to Tony Soprano; his most famous line.
One time we saw a sign that said "Bear Left"... so we went home.
~ Bobby Baccalieri telling Tony a story about him and his father.
You probably don't even hear it when it happens.
~ Bobby Baccalieri on how he thinks mobsters die; his second most famous quote.

Bobby "Bobby Bacala" Baccalieri, Jr. is a major character in the HBO Television Series The Sopranos.

He is a kindhearted and caring caporegime of the DiMeo Crime Family, who is mostly seen as the caretaker for Corrado "Junior" Soprano, but is also close with DiMeo Family boss, Tony Soprano and his crew. He later becomes Tony's brother-in-law after marrying his sister Janice Soprano. Out of all of the characters in the series, Bobby is shown to be the most lovable and sympathetic, especially when compared to most of the other mobsters.

He was portrayed by Steve Schirripa.

Biography[]

Background[]

Robert "Bobby" Baccalieri, Jr. was born on June 12, 1964 to an unknown mother and Robert "Bobby" Baccalieri, Sr. who was a highly acclaimed hitman for the DiMeo Crime Family in Newark, New Jersey. At some point in time, Bobby became made in the DiMeo Family and also married a woman named Karen and had two kids, Bobby III and Sophia. With the help of his father, Bobby secured his place in capo, Junior Soprano's crew in the family.

Season 2-3[]

During the early 2000's, Bobby became the caretaker for Junior after he was put on house arrest, which is most likely due to how caring and sweet Bobby is, even when dealing with the short-tempered and narcissistic person that Junior is. Bobby was also very well-liked by the rest of the mobsters, with him barely ever getting into conflict with any of them. Not to mention, Tony spared both Bobby and Junior after ordering the hits of various members of Junior's crew. Bobby was also the head of Junior's loansharking business while he was under house arrest, with him even being made a capo because of his performance. Around this time, Bobby also dealt with his father dying after murdering two men and then dying in a car accident after dropping his inhaler for his medical condition.

Season 4-5[]

In 2002, Bobby was heartbroken when his wife, Karen died in a car accident that he had to be on the road when it happened, which he was severely annoyed with while unaware that it was his wife. Compared to his fellow mobsters, Bobby loved his wife with every part of his body, and unlike the rest, never had a comare (a made man's mistress). However, after Karen's death, Bobby fell in love with Tony Soprano's sister, Janice, who he later married despite her anger issues and controlling nature. In 2005, Bobby and Janice had a daughter named Domenica.

Season 6[]

Part I[]

One day at the Feast of Saint Elezar carnival, Janice, Bobby III and Domenica get into an accident on one of the rides. At first, Bobby does not think highly of the situation but after Janice shouts at him for his carelessness, Bobby also grows angry about the accident. With the help of the owner of the ride after Bobby beat him up, he learns that DiMeo Caporegime, Peter Paul "Paulie Walnuts" Gualtieri ordered the owner to withheld the funds needed to repair the ride to save money. Bobby confronts Paulie on this issue forcing him to be restrained by several bystanders. Before Bobby can do really anything to Paulie, Tony has Paulie apologize, resolving the conflict.

In the episode "Moe n' Joe" Bobby is robbed by a group of kids while making some collections. One of the kids shoots Bobby at the sidewalk next to Bobby's face which injures his right eye after a fragment of the bullet hit his eye. Although Bobby is his brother-in-law, Tony shows no sympathy for Bobby's injury but after truly seeing the situation Bobby is in, he has Johnny Sacrimoni lower the price of the house Bobby and Janice were going to buy.

Part II[]

He don't care.
~ Bobby Bacala's last words, referring to his son, Bobby III.

Bobby and Janice invite Tony and Carmela to their Upstate New York cabin during springtime. While playing Monopoly late at night and while drunk, Tony continuously makes jokes about Janice being a slut when she was younger. In retaliation, Bobby starts a fist fight with Tony, with him ultimately winning. This damages Tony's ego, however he is calmed down when Carmela and Janice tell him that he would have won if he wasn't drunk. Due to this fight, Tony sends Bobby to Montreal to murder the brother-in-law of one of Tony's associates. Rene LeCours, who is the man with the hit on him, becomes Bobby's first murder victim and after this, Bobby comes back to his cabin and reunites with his family. Around this time, Bobby also becomes the underboss for the DiMeo Crime Family.

In the episode "The Blue Comet", the DiMeos come into conflict with the New York crime family, the Lupertazzis. The boss of the family, Phil Leotardo decides to order a hit on Bobby, Tony and consigliere, Silvio Dante. Tony, who was tipped off by Agent Harris of the FBI, hears about this planned hit and has a hitman murder Phil, however this backfires as the hitman accidentally kills the wrong person, along with his daughter, who was Phil's mistress. Meanwhile, Bobby is seen shopping for model trains (a hobby of his) with him setting his eyes on "The Blue Comet" which is a vintage train set. Soon after Bobby talks to the man at the desk, two men enter the shop and shoot Bobby while he is buying the train. Ultimately, Bobby is killed, marking the start of the war of the DiMeos against the Lupertazzis forcing Tony, his family and the rest of the DiMeo family into hiding. Bobby's death would leave Janice a widow and left to raise his children alone and greatly upsets his nephew AJ. Bobby's death would later be avenged when Phil is shot and killed by Walden Belfiore on Tony's orders.

Trivia[]

  • Because of Bobby's kind demeanor and personality as when compared to the rest of the cast, has been said to be the only main character who is a good person (at least for the characters who aren't criminals). However, this isn't entirely true as Bobby killed a man, is a mobster and has no problem with being a mobster and is also fine with beating up people and extorting business.
  • Bobby is the only person to beat Tony Soprano in a fight, at least to our knowledge.
  • Along with various other quotes from the series, Bobby's "Quasimodo predicted all of this" line has become infamous to fans and the community as a whole, with it also becoming a meme.
