~ Sabo bragging about killing Eva Harrison |
Bobby Sabo is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Marathon". He is a small-time criminal who robs and murders a woman and tries to get away with it by accusing the police of framing him.
He was portrayed by Guillermo Diaz, who also portrayed Spike in Fresh.
Overview[]
Sabo is a small-time criminal in New York City who specializes in selling drugs and committing robberies; by the time of the episode, he has been arrested 12 times and served eight months in jail.
"Marathon"[]
Sabo robs and murders a woman named Eva Harrison in broad daylight before escaping on his mountain bike. He then sells the bike and takes refuge in his grandmother's house.
NYPD Homicide Detectives Lennie Briscoe and Ed Green investigate the murder and trace the bike to Sabo, while also discovering his arrest record, which gives them enough probable cause to search his grandmother's apartment. When Sabo comes home, he sees the detectives and takes off running, ultimately evading arrest by going down the fire escape and disappearing into the street.
Briscoe and Green question Victor, who admits that he drove his cousin to Port Authority bus terminal. Sure enough, Briscoe and Green find Sabo there, trying to leave the city. They arrest him in the men's room, where he defiantly exposes himself as they take him into custody.
Sabo denies killing Harrison, and Briscoe and Green are forced to let him go after two eyewitnesses to the robbery cannot pick him out of a lineup. They question Victor again, and he tells them that Sabo is staying with his former cellmate, Diego Garza. They get Garza to admit that Sabo had brought a gun into his apartment, but that he had made him get rid of it. After finding a gun in Victor's car, Briscoe and Green arrest Sabo while he is playing basketball with a group of friends, and he sneers at Briscoe that he "gave that white bitch what she deserved".
During his interrogation, however, Sabo denies having confessed to the murder, which complicates the situation because no one but Briscoe heard him say it. He is later released after forensic testing proves that Sabo's gun is not the murder weapon. Briscoe and Green ultimately find out that he sold the murder weapon to another small-time criminal named Flaco Ochoa before buying the weapon that they found in Victor's car, giving them enough evidence to arrest him again.
Executive Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy and Assistant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael charge Sabo with second-degree murder, but he claims that Briscoe, who has a reputation for bending the law, framed him. When Ochoa goes back on his promise to testify against Sabo, however, the case becomes almost entirely dependent on Briscoe's claim that Sabo confessed, which Sabo's lawyer says is fabricated; Sabo himself, meanwhile, accuses Briscoe of having a vendetta against him. The judge ultimately excludes the confession and says she will dismiss the case unless McCoy presents new evidence within 24 hours.
Acting on a hunch, Briscoe and Green question Garza about the shoes Sabo had been wearing the day of the murder, which are stained with Harrison's blood. Sabo offers to give McCoy and Carmichael information about a serial rapist he had met in jail in return for pleading guilty to manslaughter instead of murder. McCoy reluctantly agrees to the deal and asks Sabo what he said while Briscoe was arresting him; Sabo smugly replies, "What I told that old cop? That I gave that bitch what she deserved."
Sabo is then sentenced to six to 12 years in prison.
