~ Bohai's famous quote and his revelation regarding the Ceo. |
Bohai is a minor antagonist in the 2022 video game Horizon Forbidden West.
One of the leading Diviners of the erstwhile Far East tribe known as the Quen, Bohai's responsibilities often includes searching for ancient data with his Focus, albeit an outdated version, as well as the suppression of so-called "heretical" data, in order to maintain stability within the Quen Empire.
Bohai serves as the former secretary of the Ceo, the tribe's expeditionary leader and a relative of the Quen's emperor, and he and his like-minded subordinates later would desert him after his descent to madness and later his death on Thebes. He would attempt to execute Aloy and Alva for not telling the truth regarding who the Ceo truly is, before Aloy convinced her, causing the Quen and himself to side with Aloy.
Personality[]
Bohai is arrogant and deceptive, since Alva states he has claimed credit for her efforts on several occasions, and his contacts with the Ceo demonstrate his duplicity. He is often infamous for his duplicitous nature, often taking one of his Overseer's, Alva's, hard work and credits it to himself.
With this in mind, Bohai is ultimately a rational man who does not act on impulse. All evidence point to him being a capable leader.
Biography[]
The Eastern Expedition[]
Bohai was chosen as the Overseer to lead the Eastern Expedition to San Francisco in search of the Legacy that would save the Quen from starvation and water. He was one of the Quen who made it through the voyage and served as an excellent second-in-command. Bohai verified his subordinate Alva's remarkable discovery of the site of Thebes, Ted Faro's last resting place, however he and the rest of the crew were unable to reach the bunker after months.
Bohai attempted to placate the Ceo's massive ego as he descended into madness. Bohai disliked the man, whom he referred to as a "entitled egotist," and just went along to save his own neck.
Ancestor Reborn[]
Alva returned from the Greenhouse, a Faro Automated Solutions facility, with an abundance of agricultural data around a year into the voyage, claiming to have been aided by Aloy, who was Elisabet Sobeck reincarnated. Bohai ordered the sentries to bring Aloy before him if she arrived at Legacy's Landfall because Alva had instructed her where to find it. Aloy did indeed show up, seeking to see Alva. Because she had killed several of the Quen's men at the Greenhouse, Bohai wanted to check her identification first. The Ceo, who shared Bohai's concerns about her identification, intervened in the ensuing confrontation. The Quen warmed up to Aloy when she said that she was seeking for Thebes to discover a means to cure the planet, validating the Ceo's suspicion.
The Quen had certainly discovered Thebes, but machine strikes had driven Alva and the dig crew to take refuge in the Digsite, according to Bohai. Aloy surprised him by accurately guessing the nature of the unusually powerful Thunderjaw, an Apex variant, however she didn't explain on where she got her information and offered to take it down.
After Aloy had dealt with the Thunderjaw, Bohai joined the Ceo and the party proceeded to Thebes' entryway. When Aloy verified that only Ted Faro could open the main door, Bohai became the Ceo's target of his anger, because he had guaranteed that only a Living Ancestor bearing Sobeck's essence could do so. Fortunately, Alva intervened, believing that Aloy could get inside through the flooded tunnels.
Bohai openly stated his confidence in Aloy's ability to open the hatch, soon before the Ceo appeared in regalia evocative of Faro and compelled her to don Sobeck's Raiment, threatening Alva's life if she did not obey. The Ceo was then escorted inside Thebes by Bohai, who advised him to put guards to the entrances. When they arrived at a big atrium, Bohai noticed two sculptures that came to life and attacked, which Aloy described as Corruptors. Bohai and the Ceo departed, leaving Aloy and Alva to their own devices. Bohai elected to return to the surface for his own safety after the robots were dealt with.
Deserting the Ceo[]
Bohai's decision to retreat from Thebes proved to be a sensible one. The Quen were alerted to a disturbance coming from Thebes, and Bohai led a squad to the dig site to investigate. He demanded an explanation after watching Aloy and Alva dash out the door of Thebes, the corridor disintegrating behind them. Alva sought to justify the Ceo's death by claiming that he gave "his life to obtain the mysteries of Thebes." Bohai, no longer bound by the whims of a dead lunatic, rejected her politically motivated response and threatened to have them killed before a firing squad unless they told him the truth.
Aloy then mocked his incompitence as she's fought "far more threatning thing than a sqaud of islanders wearing pajama's, blaming the Ceo for the fall of Thebes, only to "die like a gutless coward." Fortunately, she did locate something that will benefit the Quen nation, and she persuaded Bohai to let her take it in exchange for his taking credit when things start to look up. Bohai agreed with her logic and said she was welcome in Landfall, the Quen's territory, as long as Alva accompanied her and reported on her progress.
Nemesis[]
Sometime after the defeat of Far Zenith, Bohai would later lead an expeditionary team to head back to the Empire and warn of Nemesis and the threat it poses on the new world. At an unknown amount of time, Bohai was given a more updated Focus by Alva.
