The Boneraiser is the main protagonist of the 2023 indie roguelike action-RPG game Boneraiser Minions. The Boneraiser is an enigmatic, undead individual with unspeakable powers of necromancy. They can also change the nature of their powers by playing as different classes, which grant a set of different powers, changing the player's playstyle.
The Boneraiser is in a constant battle with the forces of King Gigald, and any time the Boneraiser begins a wave of survival, the King's minions will increase in difficulty with each stage. The Boneraiser's powers are not just limited to summoning his own minions, but powering up the King's forces as well. Although this strengthens the enemy, it also increases the rewards they leave behind when defeated.
Biography[]
The origins and identity of the Boneraiser are a complete mystery. However, the Steam page for the game state that the game is a gothic-themed horror. That, coupled with the medieval theme of the game, the game's time period is likely between the 1000s to the 1600s. The opening story of the game mentions that the many boneraisers have existed, and were extremely shunned for their necromancy and dark magic.
Those caught using those forbidden powers of necromancy were said to be hunted, hanged, burnt, staked and buried in mausoleums. The player-controlled Boneraiser was apparently once of these individuals, but even after death, the Boneraiser had risen from the grave and continued to fight the King's men. It is possible the Boneraiser is doing this as revenge for being reviled and killed by the townspeople.
It is possible that the Boneraiser was a villainous person who harmed or even killed townsfolk with their necromancy powers, and was finally punished and killed for it. It is also possible the Boneraiser was not necessarily harming anyone, but was caught performing these dark arts and was punished all the same. Lastly, some sort of in between scenario of the aforementioned situations can also be a possibility.
Description[]
Not only is the Boneraiser's identity completely unknown, but their gender is as well. The raiser is also never seen, as they wear a purple robe at all times, which can change depending on which class they choose. The Boneraiser is not a very capable in combat, as in gameplay, they only run around and avoid attacks by enemies, letting their raised minions do the killing.
There is a special case if the raiser chooses the vampire class, as they can raise their max health by sucking the blood of their enemies. However, doing this will still damage the Boneraiser. The raiser can choose one from sixteen classes:
- Deprived Wretch - The starting, default class. Roughly the weakest class, but contains abilities to acquire more methods of finding spells and relics.
- Liche Necromancer - Favors quantity over quality, providing the benefit of amassing a larger number of minions, albeit the minions will be usually weaker than other classes.
- Vampire Survivor - One of the few classes that benefit from touching enemies, as doing so will increase maximum health. The class also features a very large health pool, coupled with fast health regeneration.
- Sinned Deamologist - Focuses on summoning and empowering demon and diablos minions.
- Sorcerer Hollow - A balance between holding onto many spells and increasing survivability.
- Gangly Grafted - Focuses on having giant minions, empowering them, and empowering oneself with every giant minion active.
- Meldum Afflicted - Focuses on blue Meldus minions, and empowering them. Also increases health and run speed based on how many Meldus minions are active.
- Cyclop Exile - Has many random number generator mechanics, but gives a focus on archer minions.
- Doll Maker - Focuses on having brute force up front, with less focus on support minions, but more weight on non-support minion upgrades.
- Sprout Brotato - Focuses on "Bro" minions, and empowering them. As well as having more to empower oneself.
- Psycho Possessed - A culmination of all other classes.
- Voodoo Shaman - Focuses on the ability to use zombies as minions, as well as use auras to empower oneself and weaken enemies.
- Boneworm Brainiac - Allows the Boneraiser to launch attacks and defenses themselves, rather than solely focusing on minions.
- Imp Contraptineer - Focuses on laying traps and controlling terrain, as well as impling minions that lay traps.
- Dark Metaman - Contains many powerful perks right from the start, making this class stronger than others up front by default. Collecting hero souls also grant many helpful perks. Two boneraises rather than one is also possible.
- Beast Whisperer - Can no longer summon skeleton minions, but gains the ability to summon more beast minions.
When on the battlefield, the Boneraiser must keep summoning minions to do his bidding. On top of this, he must also upgrade them in any way he can to maintain an upper hand. The raiser can even combine minions to create larger ones. These minions cannot be killed or attacked by the enemy in any way, as the focus will always be on the Boneraiser himself. To summon more minions, bones must be collected.
The Boneraiser can also use cast spells, which must be collected on the battlefield. By default, the raiser can only hold three, but this can be upgraded to a higher number. Relics and hero souls can also be found, which directly upgrades the Boneraiser, and can upgrade the minions respectively. The raiser must also find gems and coins, which can be used to purchase even more upgrades.
The Boneraiser has the ability to dash short distances, which also make him invulnerable during the length of the dash. They can also make long dashes as well, but doing this requires a longer recharge of the ability after. The raiser can gain something known as "occult health", which is an extra layer of health that depletes before the raiser's actual health.
Personality[]
Being a silent protagonist, there is much ambiguity on the Boneraiser's personality. However, their actions provide a large amount of probable traits. The Boneraiser stops at nothing to achieve his goals, as well as empowering himself and his minions to win any battle he can. He can also make deals with other undead characters, allowing the raiser access to unique purchases.
The Boneraiser is also a resourceful individual, using his lair to accomplish all sorts of tasks, as well as employing another undead to manage other aspects of gameplay. They are shown to be extremely skilled at their craft, as the raiser can master many forms of his necromancy, and his minions are always obedient and helpful, no matter what.
Given the vague story of the game, it can be assumed that the Boneraiser is exacting revenge over his death in the past. It's also possible that the Boneraiser is simply defending themselves, and/or believes that they are not evil, while the King's men are.
Trivia[]
- The title of the Boneraiser himself, as well as many of the minions they raise, are crude references to erections. Even some of the skeletal minions are called "boners".
