Bonnie the Bunny is a major antagonist of the 2023 supernatural horror film Five Nights at Freddy's, the film adaptation of the popular video game franchise of the same name.
He is an animatronic blue bunny rabbit who is the guitarist of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. One of the pizzeria's four main attractions, it is revealed that he and his friends come to life by the spirits of ghost children at nighttime and kill anybody that comes after hours, including night guards that may be working there.
He was portrayed by Jade-Kindar Martin as an animatronic. As a ghost child, he was portrayed by David Huston Doty.
Appearance[]
Just like his video game incarnation, Bonnie is a tall, anthropomorphic, quite chubby animatronic bunny rabbit with a red bow tie, although he does bear a few slight differences. He is now more of a light blue, like in Help Wanted, as opposed to his video game counterpart's more faded indigo. His bow tie is now made of fabric instead of molded plastic while the lighter color on his belly now extends up to his neck as opposed to stopping just below his bow tie. Curiously, the pads on the bottoms of his feet are now black instead of sharing the lighter blue color of his accents. Like his video game counterpart, he lacks eyebrows. When acting in a hostile manner, his eyes glow orange while under the influence of William Afton. However, his eyes glow red when he and the other animatronics are disposing of William. He also sports a red strap along his neck to support his guitar.
As a ghost child, he has brown skin, with short black hair and brown eyes. He also wears a dark blue long-sleeved shirt with two white horizontal stripes, along with grayish blue jeans, cool gray shoes and paper white bunny ears attached to his headband.
Personality[]
Like his video game counterpart, Bonnie is an animatronic who kills any security guard working the night shift. He is said to be the most hostile of the group, which is reflected in his actions. He even seems to reflect a form of anger the others don't show naturally. However, this doesn't mean he is not patient, as he's capable of predicting if somebody is going to enter a room before hiding in that exact room in preparation, as demonstrated by how he killed Hank. He is also able to alert Freddy upon detecting Mike when he arrives at the pizzeria to save Abby.
However, Bonnie isn't a bad person and, like his bandmates, he is instead a very tragic individual. Like his friends, he was once an innocent child who had his life cut short by William Afton, who abducted him, killed him and stuffed his corpse inside the Bonnie animatronic suit alongside his friends. It's also mentioned by Vanessa that Bonnie and his bandmates don't want to hurt anyone, as they are influenced by William into committing all of their murders for him.
Despite this, Bonnie, like his bandmates, is shown to be kind and playful towards children as, like the other animatronics, he still has the mind of a child, as demonstrated through his relationship with Abby. Despite being manipulated by Afton into attempting to stuff her into an animatronic suit and kill her brother, Mike, he does seem genuinely care about the girl, participating in building a fort with her and the others. He is shown giving Abby a thumbs up to let her know that he is fine when he falls on his back while building the fort. It is also revealed that he and his bandmates are shown to be a fond of drawings as he liked the picture of a heart that Abby gave to him as a gift. While playing with Abby, he and Freddy performed "Wild One" by Iggy Pop to entertain her as she dances with Foxy and Chica.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Guitar Proficiency: Bonnie is proficient in playing his guitar, shown when he performs on stage with his bandmates.
- Enhanced Durability: Bonnie is incredibly durable, shown to have almost no weaknesses. When he's electrocuted by Mike, he briefly shuts down, before he reactivates himself, seeming absolutely fine.
- Enhanced Strength: Bonnie is incredibly powerful, being capable of killing his victims in a few strong hits, demonstrated by how Bonnie beaten Hank to death in the Storage Room.
- Stealth Mastery: Bonnie is incredibly stealthy, shown when he silently appeared behind Hank in the Storage Room and murdered him.
Biography[]
Background[]
The Bonnie animatronic was created under William Afton, an associate of Fazbear Entertainment, being the guitarist of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza in order to entertain kids. However, Afton abducted a boy with paper white bunny ears attached to his headband, murdering him along with other four children. The child's soul returns to the living world and possesses Bonnie, residing in him.
After Freddy Fazbear's pizza place was closed down, William, under the alias of Steve Raglan, went under the job as a career counselor, tricked people into getting a job at the abandoned pizza place, just so they could get killed by Bonnie and the others. And by proxy, in his Spring Bonnie disguise, tricked his victims into killing the night guards or anyone who came into the building, such as himself, and his daughter Vanessa Shelly.
Five Nights at Freddy's[]
During Mike's first shift at Freddy's, as Mike explored the place, Bonnie was discovered by Mike whilst checking the animatronics behind the curtain on the show stage. After several minutes later when Mike fell asleep, Bonnie's spirit appeared in his dream along with the other ghost children. When he was asked by Mike to as what happened to his younger brother, he and along with the other ghost children ran away from Mike. Mike encountered Bonnie's spirit again during his second shift during his second dream sequence, when Mike asked furiously where Garrett was, he and the other ghost children ran away from Mike again. Later, Vanessa Shelly showed Mike, Bonnie and the other animatronics because she wanted him to properly meet them.
After Mike's second shift, Bonnie and the other animatronics were activated after a group of criminals broke in and began hunting them down. Bonnie was precisely after Hank, and encountered him in the supply closet when he was trying to hide. Hank was unable to escape and screamed helplessly in terror as Bonnie moved slowly towards him, beating him to death off-screen in the process. Later on when Jeff came into the office and checked on the security cameras, Bonnie and Chica were in one of the hallways.
During Mike's third shift, Bonnie and the fellow animatronics attempted to kidnap Abby, but were interrupted by Mike, who was trying to rescue her. Before leaving the place, Abby drew a heart for Bonnie as a gift. He went back to the show stage after Mike and Abby left the place. During Mike's fourth shift, Bonnie and the fellow animatronics build a fort along with Mike, Vanessa and Abby. At one point during the fort's construction - presumably due to his heavy weight as he is an animatronic - Bonnie fell backwards onto the floor, but gave a thumbs up when Abby asked if he is okay. While Abby is dancing with the animatronics as Mike and Vanessa returned, Abby strums Bonnie's guitar despite Vanessa calling her out not to do it, which electrocutes her, knocking her unconscious.
In the final dream sequence, when Mike ultimately refused to surrender Abby Schmidt to the ghost children, Bonnie's spirit and the others began to retaliate and attack Mike, nearly killing him. During Mike's fifth and final shift, Bonnie and Freddy Fazbear were performing on the show stage while Chica and Abby went into the backroom. Bonnie did detect Mike and attempted to alert Freddy to the imminent danger and failed and was shortly electrocuted alongside Freddy, where they both slipped backwards and were briefly deactivated.
Moments later, after William Afton tells the animatronics to wake up because they have someone to play with, Bonnie reactivated and joined the other animatronics under William Afton's control and tried to take Abby, but after Abby drew a picture for the animatronics - of William murdering him and his friends - to show what he truly was, the memories of their deaths returned to the animatronics. Bonnie and the others ultimately turned against Afton after they discovered the truth about him. During the Spring Lock Failure, Bonnie and the other animatronics watched him as he suffered and writhed in pain, and with Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Place internally collapsing before them, Bonnie and the other two animatronics followed Foxy into the engineering room.
It is uncertain at this time as to what might have happened to Bonnie along with the rest of the animatronics after Freddy Fazbear Pizza's Place internally collapsed.
Trivia[]
- In several of the trailers, the animatronics are shown being powered down on stage after suddenly turning on. A brief shot in the second full length trailer shows that the sparks that burst upon the shutdown are directly in front of Bonnie, making it look like he's being electrocuted or outright exploded, leading to many jokes and fan art.
- In the original trailer as well as a few others follow, Bonnie and the other animatronics' eyes would become red. This was met with mixed reaction from the community, some finding it funny and others hating it. Once the movie released, however, the red eyes had been completely scrubbed, with several scenes featuring the eyes not being in the theatrical release.
- Unlike the video game, Bonnie is light blue instead of faded indigo and is shown to have a red strap along his neck to support his guitar in the film, something that he lacked in the game.
- In the film, Bonnie's ghost kid is black, with no implication of this being the case in the games.
