~ Tyrion and Boros. |
Ser Boros Blount is a supporting antagonist in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series and a minor character in its television adaptation Game of Thrones.
He is a knight of House Blount in the Crownlands and a member of the Kingsguard to Robert I, Joffrey I and later Tommen I. While Jaime Lannister deems him an adequate fighter, by ordinary knight standards, he is viewed in contempt and as a disgrace to the White Cloak by many, infamously due to his cowardice, bad temper, and cruelty. Sansa Stark considers him the worst of the Kingsguard. Unlike Jaime, Osmund Kettleblack thinks Boros is an inept fighter.
Biography[]
Ser Boros is a member of House Blount, a family of the Crownlands. He becomes a knight of King Robert's Kingsguard after Robert's Rebellion.
A Game of Thrones[]
Boros, along with Ser Meryn Trant and Ser Jaime Lannister, escorts King Robert I Baratheon to Winterfell. According to Varys, Ser Boros, along with Ser Meryn, despite having sworn their oaths to Robert, are Queen Cersei Lannister's lackeys, since they are considerably more loyal towards her.
Much later, after King Robert was killed during a hunt and the Hand, Lord Eddard Stark, was arrested for treason, Boros escorts Ned's daughter, Sansa Stark, from Maegor's Holdfast to the small council chambers to meet with Cersei. The queen then tasks Boros with delivering Jeyne Poole to Lord Peter Baelish.
Later, Ser Boros is present in the throne room of the Red Keep when Ser Barristan Selmy, Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, is dismissed by both Cersei and King Joffrey from his duties. Seeing the shame that his former sworn brother had gotten, he and the rest of the kingsguard let out mocking laughter with not even single trace of sympathy or remorse.
A Clash of Kings[]
Ser Boros is present among Cersei's retinue at the main gate. He is seen in white scale and has a scowl on his face. He then rode out with Cersei and the retinue as the queen goes out to do her round to inspect the scorpions and spitfires at the gates. Later, as a drunken Sandor Clegane is returning Sansa back into the Red Keep, after she visited the castle's godswood, he came across Ser Boros, who is holding the bridge of Maegor's Holdfast, causing Sansa to flinch away. When Boros tells him that King Joffrey was looking for him, Sandor states that he was away drinking and reminds Ser Boros that it was supposed to be his and his other sworn brothers' night to protect him.
When Boros asks Sansa why she wasn't in her chambers, she made up a lie that she had went to the godswood to pray for Joffrey's safety. When Sandor asks him if he is expecting her to sleep while unrest could be heard throughout, Ser Boros admits that some people told tales regarding the preparations of Tyrek Lannister's wedding but they were quelled off by a party led by King Joffrey himself.
Much later, Boros was present in the throne room as Sansa was brought before the king. In retaliation for Robb Stark's victory at Oxcross, Joffrey orders Boros to beat Sansa. Seizing the girl, Ser Boros brutally punches Sansa in the stomach before drawing out his sword and striking her with the blade's thigh, leaving Sansa crying in pain. He is then ordered to strip her naked, in which Boros tears Sansa's dress, leaving her naked to the waist. Finally, Joffrey orders him to beat her bloody, however before Ser Boros could do so, Tyrion Lannister, who is accompanied by Bronn and the wildling Timmett, intervenes. When the dwarf questions him for his dishonorable actions, Ser Boros threatens him with his sword as well as calling him an imp before he is joined by Ser Meryn Trant, who drew out his sword but he is warned by Bronn to not get blood on his and his sworn brother's white cloaks.
When King Joffrey reminds Tyrion that he, as the king, can do as he likes and the dwarf responded back by reminding him of Aerys II Targaryen, the Mad King, this caused Ser Boros to warn Tyrion to not threaten the king in front of the Kingsguard, but the dwarf tells him that he is educating his nephew before telling Bronn and Timett to kill Boros if he opens his mouth again. After Tyrion reveals to the latter that what he himself said is a simple example of a threat and makes him see the difference, this caused Ser Boros to redden with embarrassment, as he realized that he has been outwitted. In anger, he warns Tyrion that Cersei will hear of it.
During the bread riots in King's Landing, which was inadvertently sparked by King Joffrey, Cersei orders Ser Boros and Ser Meryn Trant to find Sansa Stark, who had disappeared in the riots, but Boros is reluctant to follow Cersei's command to find Sansa in the turmoil, but Sandor Clegane eventually returns the girl to the castle.
Concerned for the safety of her younger son, Prince Tommen Baratheon, during the War of the Five Kings, Cersei tasks Boros and Lord Gyles Rosby with secretly bringing the boy from the unruly capital to the safety of Rosby. Ser Lancel Lannister informs Tyrion, however, and the acting Hand of the King orders Ser Jacelyn Bywater, Commander of the City Watch of King's Landing, to take Tommen into custody before the boy reaches Rosby. When Jacelyn's gold cloaks stop Gyles's retinue on the road, Ser Boros cowardly surrenders Prince Tommen without a fight. The boy is then watched over at Rosby by men loyal to Tyrion while Boros himself is imprisoned in the castle's dungeon. Livid at Boros's cowardice, Cersei has King Joffrey strip him of his white cloak. Ser Osmund Kettleblack then takes Ser Boros' place on the Kingsguard.
A Storm of Swords[]
After the battle of the Blackwater, Ser Boros is reinstated to the Kingsguard by Lord Tywin Lannister, who returned to being Hand of the King. This was done to replace Sandor, who fled during the battle. The next day, when Tyrion was put on trial for the poisoning of King Joffrey I Baratheon, Ser Boros is one of the many witnesses who testified against Tyrion. Whether or not he holds a grudge against Queen Cersei for stripping of his white cloak, he nevertheless recounts that Tyrion had beaten Joffrey after the bread riot and the threat against Joffrey's life, exaggerating and worsening the situation for Tyrion. When the dwarf demands that he tell the judges on what Joffrey did, Boros angrily tells Tyrion that he will them that Tyrion ordered "his savages" to kill him if he speaks.
A few days later, on the last day of the trial, when Shae falsely testified against Tyrion, Boros Blount is one of the many people present in the court that burst into really loud laughter, when she recounts how Tyrion wanted her to call him My giant of Lannister.
When Jaime Lannister returns to King's Landing, he makes Ser Boros the official food taster for the new king, Tommen I Baratheon, during a meeting in White Sword Tower. Angered by his new duty, Boros tells Jaime that he should be the food taster since he has lost his sword hand. When Jaime states that they can duel if Boros is unhappy, this causes the latter spits at Jaime's feet and he angrily leaves the room.
Later, during Tyrion's trial by combat, Boros and the other Kingsguard stood guard to keep the crowd away as Ser Gregor Clegane duels Prince Oberyn Martell. Boros eventually becomes distracted by the duel, however, and Gregor kills a stableboy who stands too close to the fighting.
A Feast For Crows[]
Boros Blout and Osmund Kettleblack bring the news of Lord Tywin Lannister's death to Queen Cersei. Boros learns from the gaolers that Tyrion Lannister disappeared from the black cells and he and Osmund are ordered by Cersei to murder the two turnkeys who fell asleep during Tyrion's escape; they are later reprimanded, mainly Osmund, by Jaime for mindlessly killing the only two leads.
Later, when King Tommen objects to his mother speaking ill of his new bride, Queen Margaery Tyrell, Cersei tasks Ser Boros with having Tommen whip bloody Pate, his whipping boy. Cersei, when she frames Margaery for adultery, plans on Boros being the only Kingsguard available if Margaery asks for trial by combat, as Cersei believes Boros would be no match for any champion named by the Faith of the Seven. When Cersei inquires about his fighting skill, she is assured by Osmund that Boros is an inept fighter. Boros and ten House Lannister guards escort Cersei to the Great Sept of Baelor. While they wait outside, they were unaware that Cersei got arrested by the Faith.
A Dance With Dragons[]
After Cersei's arrest, Ser Kevan Lannister returned to King's Landing and holds the position of Lord Regent. Ser Boros stands guard at the Red Keep during Cersei's walk of atonement. When Ser Robert Strong, a silent but nearly eight-foot tall armored giant, was made a new member of the Kingsguard, Ser Boros had claimed that he never saw him use the privy.
Later that night, he guards King Tommen when Kevan has dinner with Cersei and the young king. Boros appears to now be in bad shape and in bad health. Since he has a difficult time in standing for the duration of the meal he has to lean on a wall for support. Ser Kevan thinks being a food taster is the only thing Ser Boros is capable of these days. Once dinner is over, Boros escorts Tommen and his kittens to the royal bedchamber.
Quotes[]
“ | Boros: No man threatens His Grace in the presence of the Kingsguard. Tyrion: I am not threatening the king, ser, I am educating my nephew. Bronn, Timett, the next time Ser Boros opens his mouth, kill him. Now that was a threat, ser. See the difference? Boros: The queen will hear of this! Tyrion: No doubt she will. And why wait? Joffrey, shall we send for your mother? |

“ | Boros: I am no food taster! I am a knight of the Kingsguard! Jaime: Sad to say, you are. My sister has told me how readily you yielded my nephew to Tyrion's sellswords. You will find carrots and pease less threatening, I hope. When your Sworn Brothers are training in the yard with sword and shield, you may train with spoon and trencher. Tommen loves applecakes. Try not to let any sellswords make off with them. Boros: You speak to me thus? You? Jaime: You should have died before you let Tommen be taken. Boros: As you died protecting Aerys, ser? [lurches to his feet, and clasps the hilt of his sword] I won't... I won't suffer this. You should be the food taster, it seems to me. What else is a cripple good for? Jaime: I agree. I am as unfit to guard the king as you are. So draw that sword you're fondling, and we shall see how your two hands fare against my one. At the end one of us will be dead, and the Kingsguard will be improved. Or, if you prefer, you may return to your duties. Boros: Bah! [spits green phlegm at Jaime’s feet and storms out] Thoughts of Jaime: [The man is craven, and a good thing. Though fat, aging, and never more than ordinary, Ser Boros could still have hacked him into bloody pieces. But Boros does not know that, and neither must the rest. They feared the man I was; the man I am they'd pity.] |

Trivia[]
- Due to Boros being reduced to a background character in the television series, some of his lines and moments were given to Meryn Trant, most notably the public beating and stripping of Sansa Stark.
