~ Bowser talking to his army. |
Bowser's Army are the main antagonists of Illumination's 13th feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie, an adaptation of Nintendo's Mario video game franchise.
Led by Bowser and Kamek, the army consists of many Koopas and various other enemies from the Mario franchise such as Piranha Plants, Goombas, Spinies, Shy Guys and Bob-ombs. They act as soldiers in a Military fashion for Bowser in many of his evil plots: examples being kidnapping Luigi, invading the Mushroom Kingdom, capturing the Kong army, and attacking Mario.
Biography[]
Bowser's army first appears rushing out of his floating castle when it arrives at the Penguin Kingdom, standing by for their ruler to invade the kingdom. Later on, they help to subdue the penguin army and capture the kingdom's king and soldiers as prisoners of war.
After claiming the Super Star, the army celebrates with Bowser though they are notably surprised when they hear his true intentions of claiming the relic: to use it to impress Princess Peach into marrying him. When questioned why he'd want to marry a woman that hates him so much by a Koopa Troopa, he explains that her dislike of him is what makes Peach attractive to him. When another Koopa asks if she refuses, Bowser incinerates him into a Dry Bones and says he'd just use the Star to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom. Satisfied by this bloodthirsty answer, the army continues partying.
Later on, the Koopa General brings news of Mario's arrival in the Mushroom Kingdom to Bowser, infuriating the Koopa King who believes the Italian is competing for Princess Peach's heart. Bowser later sends out his army to intercept the Kong army who are on their way to the Mushroom Kingdom via way of Rainbow Road, with his troops riding karts as well. With the Koopa General blowing up a section of the Road in fury after his kart is destroyed by Donkey Kong and Mario, the Kong army is cornered and they and their leader, Cranky Kong, are captured by Bowser's troops and brought to his castle. They also accompany Bowser to invade the Mushroom Kingdom, where Peach reluctantly agrees to marry their ruler on the terms he doesn't harm any of her people.
With some hordes of Koopa Troopas, Goombas, Spinies, and other turtles and monsters remaining in the Mushroom Kingdom to raid it, most of Bowser's army remains in the castle to watch his wedding to Peach. However, when Bowser unveils the prisoners he intends to ritually sacrifice in her honor, Peach is disgusted and reveals she would never really marry him (with the Dry Bones from earlier commenting on the drama). Peach unveils the Ice Flower she hid in her bouquet and empowers herself, freezing Bowser solid and stopping the pulley lowering the prisoners into lava.
A fierce brawl erupts between Peach and Bowser's underlings, in which she scatters most of them by igniting the fuse of King Bob-Omb, one of the guests. However, the blast causes Peach to lose her powers as she notices that the ice stopping the pulley is cracking. Fortunately, Donkey Kong and Mario arrive just in time with their power-ups and save Luigi and the other prisoners. Enraged by this development, Bowser breaks free and calls upon his ultimate weapon: the Bomber Bill, a castle-sized Bullet Bill, to destroy the Mushroom Kingdom.
Fortunately, with some quick thinking, Mario manages to lure the Bomber Bill to a Warp Pipe, where it's sucked away into the Warp Zone. However, its explosion in the Zone causes the Pipe to suck up Bowser's castle and everybody currently on it into Brooklyn. There, an enraged Bowser attacks Mario and his friends, causing the hero to run and hide. However, upon seeing his plumbing advert proclaim that the Mario Bros. are here to save Brooklyn, Mario picks up the courage to face Bowser head-on. Peach kicks the Super Star over to Mario which he tries to grab, but Bowser launches a volley of flame at the plumber. Fortunately, Luigi, wielding a manhole cover, blocks the flames for long enough that both of the brothers are able to grab the Star and become invincible.
Bowser attacks once again, only to realize that the Mario Bros. are now completely invulnerable. An epic battle ensues in which Bowser unleashes his monster minions on them to no avail, with the two plumbers finally beating down Bowser and with a final drop-kick, sending him plummeting back into the ground. Finally, exhausted from the battle, Bowser is subdued by Peach who shrinks him with a Mini Mushroom before imprisoning him in her castle, presumably with his troops were sent to jail.

Trivia[]
- Bowser not remembering what the Spinies are called could be a reference to them being some of the lesser-known enemies in the Mario games, seldom appearing in the most recent installments of the franchise. This is supported by the fact that they are mainly used as ammo for Lakitus, though strangely, Lakitus were absent in the movie.
- They are stated by Peach to be one of the most powerful factions in the film, alongside the Kongs.
- Given how difficult it is to defeat Dry Bones in the games, many fans have joked that Bowser incinerating the Koopa Troopa that asked what would happen if Peach refused his marriage proposal, was actually a rewarded promotion.
- Despite King Boo being seen as one of the guests invited to Bowser's wedding, no other Boos are seen in the entire movie. As Shigeru Miyamoto has hinted at a continued partnership of Nintendo and Illumination, it's possible that King Boo may be given a larger role in a future movie, with the Boos making their cinematic debut then.
- In the games, Bomber Bill is named Banzai Bill. "Banzai" is a traditional Japanese battle cry.
- In the first trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, a Koopa with yellow helmet, shell and shoes who is afraid of Bowser because of his tyrannical nature. But this has changed a lot since the release of the movie since the Koopa recognizable by the yellow helmet, shell and shoes is afraid of what is hidden behind the doors of the ice citadel that it was nothing d other than penguins led by their king and not Bowser.
- The Bowser Army's logo is very similar to those of their original counterpart, as seen on some flags held by Koopa soldiers.
