Bradford Whitewood Sr. is the main antagonist in the 1986 crime drama film At Close Range, based on the real life rural Pennsylvania crime family led by Bruce Johnston Sr. which operated during the 1960s and 1970s.

He was portrayed by Christopher Walken, who also played Max Zorin in A View to a Kill, Frank White in King of New York, Max Shreck in Batman Returns, Vincenzo Coccotti in True Romance, Gabriel in The Prophecy series, Mr. Smith in Nick of Time, Colonel Cutter in Antz, the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow, Reed Thimple in The Country Bears, Salvatore Maggio in Kangaroo Jack, Cornelius Hatcher in The Rundown and King Louie in the 2016 The Jungle Book live-action remake.

Biography[]

Bradford "Brad" Whitewood Sr. is a man who is into organized crime, consisted of some of his brothers including Patch and Dickie. His other accomplices are Tony Pine and Boyd. Brad was once married to a woman named Julie and has two sons Bradford Whitewood Jr. and Tommy. He has not seen his sons in a long time. He and his gang rob some farms, stealing tractors and selling them off for profit and other thievery.

In 1978, in Pennsylvania, Brad Sr. goes to visit his sons and Brad Jr. and Tommy. He gives Julie some money and takes Brad Jr. for a ride and get to know one another again. Brad Sr. takes Brad Jr. to his house and meets his uncles and Brad Sr.'s girlfriend, Mary Sue. Brad Jr. learns from his dad how he and his family are making money. Brad Jr. sees some easy way of making money and wants to join in, Brad Sr. wants Brad Jr. to prove himself. At a bar Brad Sr. is at, Brad Jr. and his girlfriend, Terry have a drink and she tries to convince Brad Sr. to let him in. Brad Sr. does not like Terry's interference. Brad Sr. later on does let Brad Jr. prove himself with the help of Brad Jr.'s friends Tim, Lucas, and Aggie, Tommy helps, too when they rob a local farm.

Later one, Brad and his sons are having dinner with the gang and they see a former member of their gang, Lester Poralski, who is now and informant for the police and sees him talking to a detective at the restaurant who is investigating Brad Sr's activities. After dinner, they go talk to Lester and convince him to come along for a job. Brad Sr. and the gang get Lester drunk and take him to the lake and Dickie drowns Lester with Brad Jr. watching in horror.

Brad Jr. tells his dad that he does want out and Brad Sr. tells his son that he will not have the money to make it on his own. Brad Jr. tells Tommy to stay away from dad. Brad Sr. is later on at a cockfight and meets a cop to tells Brad about a grand jury being set up. Later on, Brad Jr. is arrested along with Aggie, Tim, Lucas, and Tommy for trying to rob a tractor store and the others are bailed out except for Brad Jr., his dad would later on take Terry to a motel room to rape her to keep silent about their activities and this action makes Brad Jr. talk to the cops and FBI.

Brad Sr. is now pissed off and they eliminate some Brad Jr.'s friends, first Lucas, then Aggie, and Brad Sr. kills Tommy. Brad Sr. plans to kill Brad Jr. now out of jail and Terry. Boyd said he will not touch this one. Brad Jr. and Terry plan to leave for Montana and outside Terry's house, Brad Jr. and Terry are shot while in his car. Terry is dead and Brad Jr. survives and goes to his dad's house and they talk. Brad Jr. finds his dad's gun in the cabinet of the bathroom and then confronts his dad and does not kill him but lets him be arrested. Brad Sr. along with Patch, Dickie, Boyd, and Tony Pine. Brad Jr. testifies in court.
