~ Brainiac addressing the Justice League in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham. |
Vril Dox, otherwise known as Brainiac, is a major antagonist in the LEGO Batman video game series, specifically serving as the main antagonist of LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.
He is an android who's been shrinking the sizes and collecting cities from various planets, until becoming bored with it and setting his eyes on planet Earth, planning to add it to his collection.
He was voiced by Troy Baker in LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, Dee Bradley Baker in LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, and Corey Burton in LEGO DC Super-Villains.
Biography[]
Past[]
Brainiac was created on planet Colu as an android with a high intelligence level and supposedly no emotions. At some point, he would overthrow the rulers of Colu and go on to travel across the universe to collect knowledge, shrinking entire cities with his advanced technology and keeping them on board his spaceship. Eventually, he sought a bigger challenge in form of collecting entire planets.
LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes[]
Brainiac appears at the very end of the game, having located the Green Lantern on planet Earth and preparing to go after him. He can also be found in the open world, in the Gotham Park district, and fought as a mini-boss. After defeating him, the player can purchase him for 500,000 studs and play as him.
LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham[]
Brainiac brainwashes and captures Saint Walker, Star Sapphire, Indigo-1, Sinestro, Atrocitus and Larfleeze to use their Power Rings for his master plan. While Batman is observing his spaceship heading towards the Earth, the android brainwashes the vigilante and makes him go on a rampage in the Batcave. While the rest of the heroes are distracted by Lex Luthor's scheme to take over the Justice League's Watchtower and its weapons, the Green Lantern is sent to check on his ship when the Martian Manhunter notices it approaching. However, Green Lantern ends up getting brainwashed by the android as well.
The villain introduces himself to the Justice League and the Legion of Doom, announcing his plans to shrink the Earth and add it to his collection, sending the Green Lantern to attack them before using his and other Lanterns' Power Rings to power his shrink ray and start shrinking the Earth. The heroes and villains manage to raid his ship while Superman destroys the shrink ray, leaving the Earth too big for Brainiac to contain.
While upset about the failure of his plan, Brainiac decides that taking Earth's major cities is still better than nothing, and manages to minituarise Paris, London and Pisa, but Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman stop him from stealing either of the three. The reunited heroes fight him in Gotham, and Flash traps him and his spaceship in a cage made out of the Wayne Tower. Brainiac spends the rest of the game trapped, until he manages to escape due to the Lanterns restoring the Earth to its original size and his cage with it. He minituarises both Gotham and Metropolis, taking the two cities with him, meaning the Justice League can't attack his ship without risking destroying the cities and killing their population. He mind-controls Superman, turned giant by the Lanterns' power, and attempts to use him to destroy the rest of the heroes, but Batman manages to return Superman to his normal self using the same method Robin used to free him from Brainiac's control. Superman then stops Brainiac from escaping, saving Gotham and Metropolis.
Brainiac was eventually shrunk and trapped in a bottle, which was placed in the same prison cell Lex Luthor and Joker ended up in. While he threatens the two villains, they don't take him seriously and mock his predicament, until Luthor accidentally drops the bottle, restoring Brainiac to his original size and making the duo scared as the android clenches his fist.
Brainiac is unlocked as a playable character after completing the story mode.
LEGO DC Super-Villains[]
While Brainiac is a playable character in this game, he doesn't play a role in the story mode, but is mentioned by Atom, who used his shrinking technology for his own means. The Legion of Doom members also search for his spaceship to go to Oa and recruit Sinestro, but to no avail.
Trivia[]
- Even though Brainiac is mentioned in a news report in LEGO Batman 2, having apparently teamed up with Gorilla Grodd in the past, Justice League doesn't seem to recognise him in LEGO Batman 3, and Brainiac himself introduces himself to them as if he's never met them before.
- While Brainiac's only ability in LEGO Batman 3 is to shrink objects and characters, making him much weaker than in LEGO Batman 2 and LEGO DC Super-Villains, he is also the only character to have this ability, making him crucial for the 100% completion of the game.
