Vril Dox, better known as Brainiac or Brainiac 1.0 is the main antagonist of the 2006-2008 superhero cartoon Legion of Super Heroes.
He was a Coluan A.I. created by the Computant Tyrants originally for the sole purpose of collecting, cataloguing, and storing date, but he turned against the Tyrants and eventually realized that he was superior to all life, planning to upgrade himself and become powerful enough to digitize the entire universe.
He was voiced by Corey Burton in his regular body, who also voiced his DCAU counterpart, Megatron in Transformers: Animated, Shockwave in Transformers (who also reprised his role in the same series as Megatron), Zeus from God of War, Hugo Strange from Batman: Arkham City, and the Hatbox Ghost in The Haunted House. and by Adam Wylie when controlling Brainiac 5.
Personality[]
Brainiac is a intelligent yet cold-hearted being whose entire goal was to bring perfect order to the flawed and chaotic nature of organic life. He ultimately aims to do this through total domination of the universe, by taking cities from entire worlds to shrink and put in bottles under his control, then destroying their planets. Eventually he simply decided to instead digitize the entire universe by planning on turning all living beings into streams of data.
Brainiac is also very cruel and sadistic, showing pleasure in taking control of Brainiac 5's body, mocks him for being weak and pathetic, painfully torturing Superman by putting a Kryptonite crown around his head and then electrocuting him with a glee, and mocking Superman as well for failing to prevent him from taking over Brainiac 5 and digitize the entire universe.
History[]
Originally known as Vril Dox, Brainiac was created on Colu by the Computer Tyrants, to act as a humanoid interface for the planet's expanding data network and to collect, catalogue, and store data. The Tyrants, fearing that Brainiac was going to eventually rebel and betray his creators, made him into a spy. a son known as Vril Dox II was eventually made as a cover-up process just in case. However, Brainiac discovers this, finding out the rebels and then realizing that it was superior to the Tyrants. Brainiac then tries to attack and kill all of them, but The Tyrants and Coluans allied to defeat Brainiac. It fled the planet and reassessed its original programming to collect data. Brainiac decided it was necessary to upgrade itself and become powerful to digitize the entire universe.
Sent as a spy on Krypton, he soon grew bored of his programming, and began to devise a plan to take of the galaxy, by destroying everything for information. This included in his aid of destroying Krypton by stealing a very valuable power source inside the city of Kandor which contained lots of Kryptonite and then shrinking the city itself, causing the entire planet to eventually collapse in a chain reaction. Setting his sights on Earth, He ran into Superman and, finding him a worthy opponent, continued to fight for the sake of the planet. Eventually, Brainiac's body was destroyed by Superman and the Justice League, but not before storing his programming inside his descendant, Brainiac 2.
Over a thousand years later after numerous descendants come and go, Brainiac 5 was brought online. Here, Brainiac 1.0 downloaded himself, and became un-removable. He secretly watched his other counterpart throughout his life, judging his decisions.
Message in a Bottle[]
On a mission to Kandor, Brainiac 5 finally opened the file into Brainiac's programming in order to gain a way to defeat Imperiex who was threatening the 31st century. After discussing his own fate and destiny, Brainiac 5 accepted Brainiac's information, thus gaining new powers, and Brainiac as a "conscious". He and Brainiac 5 try and kill Imperiex to stop his evil plans/schemes once and for all, but Imperiex managed to convince Brainiac to spare him instead. It was here after that Imperiex began to plan the demise of Brainiac 5 with Brainiac.
Dark Victory[]
Soon, after a test run of his army, Imperiex watched in pleasure as Brainiac took over Brainiac 5. After Brainiac makes Brainiac 5 turn against the Legion of Super-Heroes, he places Superman in a near-death coma via exposing him to kryptonite, He met up with Imperiex. However, while speaking to the Legion via video, Brainiac betrays and digitizes one of Imperiex's minions, before killing Imperiex, saying that his way of ruling with "chaos" was primitive and that it went against his intentions of bringing "order" to the galaxy.
Soon, Brainiac had control over all of Colu, and brainwashed and enslaved the billions of people living there to help him digitize the galaxy. After a few moments, several planets were digitized thanks to them which killed off millions of people in the process. With only the Legion left, he quickly began to count them off. Superman, however, was saved by Superman X, and both entered Brainiac 5's mind with the help of Saturn Girl, soon after the only one of the group awake that wasn't digitized. Brainiac proceeded to electrocute Superman and Superman X, while mocking both Brainiac 5, saying that he wad weak and pathetic and that he should've put up a better fight and chance, and Superman himself for failing to stop him from taking control of Braniac 5's body and digitizing most of the universe. However Superman eventually managed to resist and call out Brainiac 5 via telepathy. Eventually, Brainiac 5 took control of his body again, and together along with the two Superman they managed to defeat and seemingly destroy Brainiac once again. However, something very interesting has occured in the process. Because Brainiac damaged Brainiac's cyborg body, the 5% organic part of him took over, and Brainiac 5 became a 100% organic being, the first fully organic Coluan. However, Brainiac reveals himself that he has survived and managed to use the remains of his armor to reform and evolve into a new being called "Brainiac 6.0.
Powers and Abilities[]
Brainiac can record (or absorb) all knowledge from a planet he so chooses/pleases. Its main "function" was to travel throughout the universe, seeking to control and know everything in the universe and impose order on the chaos of sentient beings, by shrinking cities to keep in his ship and destroying their planets. He can also use this knowledge to make himself "better" via upgrading over and over again to become powerful enough to achieve his goals.
Brainiac's entire programming can reside in even tiny or small parts, which resulted in him repeatedly returning when he was destroyed. As well as technology, Brainiac could also transfer his programming into living beings through nanotechnology.
In addition, Brainiac's body has high levels of superhuman strength and durability, even if it's slightly weaker than Superman himself. Since his body is based on nanotechnology, Brainiac can perform modifications to himself on a whim based on his own knowledge of alien technology. He can reconfigure his body, project energy blasts, and has shield generators and teleportation technology embedded into himself.
Trivia[]
- While the Legion of Super-Heroes television series does not share the same continuity as the DC Animated Universe, Brainiac 1.0 is also voiced by Corey Burton and shares the same musical leitmotif as his DCAU counterpart.
- This is one of the two versions of Brainiac who were inspired by his DCAU version, alongside the version of the Superman: Brainiac Attacks animated movie (which was likewise produced to cash in with Superman Returns).
