He showed up at the door again. I-I don't know what to do. S-something about him just... just felt wrong.
~ Olivia about Bucky right before he kills her.
You probably think I'm a monster, right? You saw those videos, think I did it all, right? If someone was wearing your skin... and they went, and maybe even killed someone... would you like that? Thought so. Stop ruining my life.
~ The real Bucky's thoughts about Brandon's murders, hidden in the 2024 April Fools' update.

Brandon Lester is one of the main antagonists of Shipwrecked 64, as well as the ARG surrounding it, Broadside Beach. He was the voice actor for Bucky Beaver, the mascot of Broadside Animation, and was used in one of the company's experiments to bring dead employees back to life as mascots known as Starlings for the theme park Broadside Beach. After becoming a Starling, Bucky then began to kill his former coworkers, who in turn became Starlings themselves.

Bucky is voiced by WhizWillp0wer in the commercial cutscene at the start of the game, while both Bucky in-game and Brandon are voiced by the game's creator Squeaks D'Corgeh.

Appearance[]

Bucky Beaver is a stout bipedal beaver with brown fur. He has a large black nose, a dark brown tail and dark brown inner ears. He also has a pair of long buck teeth that are lightly green at the tips. Bucky wears a white sailor vest with a blue neckerchief, and a matching small, white sailor hat. His game counterpart is largely the same, though with more cartoonish proportions, and a dark brown muzzle.

As a Starling, he looks similar to his mascot self, though more dirty-looking. He has no eyes, and sports a wide smile full of sharp teeth, with his buck teeth being longer, sharper and somewhat crooked. His Dweller form is the same, though low-poly.

As a human, Brandon Lester was a young Caucasian man with short, dark brown hair and blue-ish eyes. He had a short, dark brown beard, and was seen wearing an olive green shirt.

Personality[]

While there is not a lot of information about Brandon when he was alive, in undeath as "Bucky", Brandon had become a monster. Described as creeping around the park and eerily silent when talked to, Brandon's behaviors after becoming a Starling left a feeling of unease during his time. This unsettling aura ultimately proved itself to be right when Brandon started attacking his fellow coworkers in brutal ways, uncaring of the relationships he once had.

Strangely, Brandon's rampage only includes the voice actors for the other three mascots. Why he went after those three is unclear, but it's likely that he was either directed by someone at Broadside in order to do so or, possibly, his mind has decayed to the point where he believes that he is the real Bucky and sees the costumed performers as impersonators of his friends.

Biography[]

Past[]

After Broadside Animation's founder Rex Broadside sold the rights to his first-ever character Blot, he created Bucky Beaver to replace him, which ended up being even more popular than Blot. Eventually Broadside Animation was founded, and characters like Olive Otter, Giovanni Goose and Walter Walrus were created. After their founder's death, Broadside opened up a theme park named Broadside Beach on an island in the Bahamas known as Nulla Terra. On this island they discover a strange, flesh-like mineral that could revive dead bodies and mutate flesh. Wanting to compete with Disney, Broadside decided to open up a bio lab named Broadside Innovative Laboratory to study the mineral in hopes of bringing Rex back to life in the form of Blot, who they'd regained the rights to.

Once Broadside Beach opens, the company hires Brandon Lester, Olivia Finch and Gary Wilson to wear mascot costumes for Bucky, Olive and Giovanni respectively, as well as an unknown fourth person for Walter, the last of which was swapped out with Nathan Stewart at an unknown point. Some time later, Brandon dies from a fentanyl overdose, and the lab, testing out experimental technology for their Starling project, decides to use his death as an opportunity to create more Starlings and increase profits with lifelike mascots.

Brandon begins to perform alongside Olivia, and also starts stalking her at night, standing in front of the window-door to her cabin, sometimes putting a hand on the glass or jiggling the door handle. Once Broadside introduces a way for employees to send in complaints, she reports Brandon's behavior and notes one instance where he banged his head against the glass until it left a large bloodstain. One night in December 1989, he breaks in while she's filing another complaint, attacking her and knocking her unconscious. He then drags her bleeding body to a lake near staff quarters, drowning her and leaving her body floating in the water.

A month later, Brandon next targeted Giovanni's actor Gary. He confronted Gary when the latter went to the staff kitchen alone for something to eat, where he grabbed him and began slamming his head into a cabinet over and over, smashing his face in and breaking his back. He then shoved the still-living Gary's face into a deep fryer, killing him and leaving his body to burn on the stove.

At some point in-between or after the murders of Olivia and Gary, Brandon also went after Nathan Stewart. When Nathan saw Brandon, he began to film him as he skipped towards the animator mockingly. Brandon then grabbed an office chair and began beating Nathan to death with it, killing him by impaling half of his face with one of the chair's legs.

After the murders, Broadside labs took his victims' bodies and made them into Starlings as well, with Olivia becoming Olive, Gary becoming Giovanni, and Nathan becoming Walter. Broadside Beach eventually shut down, and the Starlings were moved to Studiogrounds, a new theme park in Florida. At some point Brandon, Olivia, Gary and Nathan all fused together, creating the Studiogrounds Husk, and was then locked away by the company, begging for freedom and happiness for years. Eventually the Husk managed to escape, splitting in half once it did, with one half remaining the Husk while the other became Vandal.

Later, during the development of Shipwrecked 64 by Cogware Games, Connor Thomas discovers the true horrors behind Broadside. After Broadside's CEO Mark Mullins orders Cogware to cancel the game, Connor takes finishing the game's development all on himself, adding in information on everything the company has done, and including the Starlings in the form of the Dwellers in the game's lower layers, in order to expose the company to the public.

Shipwrecked 64[]

Starling Bucky first appears in layer 1 after failing Olive's, Giovanni's and Walter's minigames in the 1997 version of the game. After failing Olive's minigame for the first time, Bucky is taken to a dark room where Olivia's final moments are shown on a film reel and heard on a tape recorder. Olivia files a complaint that Brandon showed up at her door again, glancing at him as she speaks. She says she doesn't know what to do about it, and that something feels off about him, glancing back to see him gone. A few moments later Brandon attacks her, and the video and audio cut out right before her death. After failing Olive's minigame again, Bucky is taken to a brighter version of the room before, and upon hopping out of it, will see a copy of Bucky, representative of Brandon, looking at Olive's dead body floating in a pond before walking away, unable to be interacted with.

After failing Giovanni's minigame twice, he is no longer able to be interacted with. A few moments after trying to talk to him, the screen will abruptly cut to camera footage of Brandon smashing Gary's head into a cabinet repeatedly before shoving his face into boiling oil. When failing a third time, footage will show of the aftermath of the murder, with Gary's dead body slumped over a burning stove, his head still submerged in oil. After failing Walter's minigame three times, the game cuts to Nathan's point of view, hazily watching Brandon as he leans over and starts beating and tearing at him.

Much later, once entering the sewers in layer 4, Brandon will begin hunting for Bucky, who must hide from him in barrels scattered throughout the map. Once Brandon has spotted Bucky, he'll begin opening up images on other tabs while giving chase, and like Dweller Walter, can smash any barrels he sees Bucky enter.

After the real Bucky encounters the Studiogrounds Husk, he is taken to the remains of Nulla Terra where all five Dwellers have been unleashed, Brandon included. Bucky has to hunt down the various copies of Husk while avoiding all of the monsters that were brought to the island's surface. After Bucky defeats Husk, the beaver is transported multiple times before taking his own life, leaving the ultimate fate of the Dwellers unknown.

About Brandon[]

It hit her before she even knew it was coming. It started with loud screaming, reduced over time to mere croaks. Any will to swim away slowly drained away as she sunk down further into the water, polluting its natural color. The Rodent stood a few feet away, watching the effects of his actions, and would only begin to walk away, when she stopped struggling.
~ Husk describing Brandon's murder of Olivia.
anyways, after a few months the island reopened and stuff. bucky was already back so brandon was kind of easy to replace. i can not find any more info about brandon lester. all i can find is some alabama stuff and facebook accounts. [sic]

Why the hell does Brandon never take off his costume?
~ An unnamed employee commenting on Brandon, unaware that he is now a Starling.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike all other Dwellers, Brandon will always look directly at the camera, rather than the player.
  • Video Game Bucky's design was notably different in the Legacy version, as he was more simplistic with a blue cap and overalls rather than a sailor's outfit, as well as a pair of large white gloves.
    • Strangely, this design still appears on the game cartridge of the remake.
  • If Water Cooler Dialogue is to be believed, Brandon was horrible at drawing when he was alive, or at the very least not good enough to last in the animation industry.
  • It's implied that Brandon hates being reanimated as a Starling, with one of his popup images showing jealousy at Rex Broadside for peacefully passing on and "rotting".
    • It can be inferred that Brandon is unaware that Rex was resurrected as Blot Bunny.
  • Aside from the Studiogrounds Vandal, who does not appear in-game at all, Brandon is the only Starling to not appear in within the TV monitor in the true ending.
