If we get paid, who cares why we do it?
~ Breadhead displaying his greed.

Breadhead is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Mud) in the 2025 Glitch horror comedy web series The Gaslight District. He is an agent of The Smiling Dead crime family, the son of Ken the Butcher, the nephew of Mud and the adoptive brother of Mel Hill. A rather dimwitted but friendly golem, Breadhead serves as the muscle of the gang, beating up and devouring anybody that the gang needs apprehended.

He is voiced by Gianni Matragrano, who also voiced Gabriel in ULTRAKILL, Cynte in Endoparasitic, Stalker in Warframe, Satan in Antonblast, Sebastian Solace in Pressure, Mr. WPNZ in SMG4, and Mr. Bullet in Mullet MadJack.

Appearance[]

As his name suggests, Breadhead appears to be an anthropomorphic loaf of sliced sandwich bread, with beady red eyes and a wide mouth. His tongue can swap between an organic one and one made of a baguette, while his entire body is composed of various pieces of bread. Breadhead's physique is rather strange, possessing lanky limbs but a pot-bellied body. He also has a heart tattoo saying "Dad" on his left arm, as seen from when he inhales yeast. For clothing, Breadhead wears a white T-Shirt, a dark red jacket and black pants.

Personality[]

Despite his large size, Breadhead is an affable, if slow-witted, giant that enjoys spending time with his family. He displays a great loyalty to his father Ken, eagerly following his orders and always jumping headfirst into danger without hesitation if it means helping out those he cares about the most. He also shares a good relationship with Mel as the latter gives him drinks to freshen up whilst playing the piano, to which he thanks her.

As a criminal, Breadhead still possesses rather dubious morals, as evidenced by his greedy nature. He doesn't seem to care about the morality of the situations he's in, so long as he's being paid, but appears to be content with payment other than actual cash, seeing as he's content with Ken paying his services with "valuable life experience". Breadhead is also quite gluttonous, devouring a whole car full of civilians to clear the road and munching down on an angel by luring it into his mouth.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Breadhead's life, apart from the fact that he's younger than Mel. It is heavily implied that Breadhead may be some sort of dough golem, seeing as he apparently has a paper inscribed with mystical symbols in his head, similar to the pieces of paper used to animate golems in Jewish myth (it is also said by Ken that he was "a bun in the oven", which could mean he was actually baked instead of being a euphemism for a fetus developing). Furthermore, when translating the symbols written on the paper via the symbols found in other parts of the pilot, it appears that the paper describes a recipe to create Breadhead. Thus, it appears that Breadhead comes from a line of mass-manufactured golems that Ken animated to serve as his gang's muscle. He also serves as a worker in the Whale Belly Butchershop, playing the piano to entertain his father's guests. According to Ken, Breadhead was much more well behaved as a child than his sister, making him easier to raise.

PILOT[]

The episode begins with the Smiling Dead chasing down Jack, a former dishwasher at Ken's butchery, down a highway (previously cleared out by Breadhead via devouring some of the drivers). Ken approaches a pair of tankers and gets Breadhead to push on one of the car's sides, allowing the gang to squeeze through before tipping the both of them. Mud manages to get a headshot on Jack, killing him temporarily, but soon questions why the gang is hunting him down as he likes Jack. Breadhead simply remarks that as long as they're getting paid, he doesn't care about motivations. Mel dares Breadhead to turn Mud inside-out for five scarabs, to which the latter retorts that he'd kill the two of them for free. The Smiling Dead approach Jack's car and despite her father's protests, Mel jumps out and onto Jack's car, causing Ken to remark to Breadhead about how he's much more obedient than Mel. Mud tries to calm Ken down, remarking that should Mel get injured, they could easily find her replacement limbs, though this is met with his head getting punched off, thankfully getting caught by Breadhead before it rolls away.

Mel forces Jack to crash his car, allowing the rest of the gang to surround his car. Laughing and shrugging off his gunfire, Ken orders Breadhead to take care of Jack, which he does so, chewing him up and breaking his limbs so that he can't flee. Jack hoarsely tries to tell them about Ken deceiving the rest of the gang on Mel's true nature, but he isn't heard. Thus, Ken orders Mud and Breadhead to "cement" Jack, throwing him into the depths of the ocean.

Later that morning, Breadhead and the gang go back to their civilian lives, with Breadhead playing the piano for Ken's customers while Mel passes out the food, even giving Breadhead some booze. Mud arrives, offering to hire Mel for triple of whatever Ken's paying her. Mel declines, stating that tripling her pay would still equal zero, which Breadhead adds on, stating that he and Mel are paid in valuable life experience. Ken arrives and, after forcing Mud to choke up the money he stole from him, grumpily orders everyone back to work. Mel claims Ken's bad mood is because his fear of her becoming a gangster is being realised. She also reveals that she's cooked up a heist for the gang to execute. Ken tries to dissuade her but she ignores him, unveiling her plan to steal the human egg in Heaven and smash it, saving the citizens of the Gaslight District from annihilation for the next 10,000 years. Ken warns her that the way to Heaven is guarded by Virtue Corp, who could sentence the gang to an eternity of torture in the Inferno if they are caught. Breadhead and Mud are unfazed by this, so Ken takes Mel away for a private talk.

Mel manages to convince her father, so the gang set out to the customs checkpoint of Paradise Lost, hiding in the back of a truck while Mud poses as a delivery driver. Once inside the checkpoint to Heaven, they ambush some security guards and, stealing their disguises, begin to execute the plan. Arriving in the checkpoint's foyer, Breadhead saws off his own head, luring in an angel which he chomps down on and traps in his mouth, panicking the flock and beginning an angel storm. This allows Mud, who hijacked the central control panel, to direct the guards after the storm, allowing Ken and Mel to sneak into Heaven. The distraction lasts long enough for Mel and Ken to retrieve the egg and escape, allowing Breadhead to retrieve his egg and Mud to flee the facility once the guards get suspicious. With the rest of the gang boarding the truck, Breadhead powers himself up with some yeast, giving them a boost before catching up with them later. During the escape, one of the security Virtues, Diligence, manages to grab onto the truck but he's pushed off by Ken, getting shredded by the angel storm in the process.

The heist executed successfully, the Smiling Dead hold a meeting in the town square, where Ken prepares a ritual, praising the Black Hand that grants the Rotlings immortality as they prepare to destroy the human egg. Just as the egg can be destroyed, it abruptly hatches into an angel, exposing the gang as frauds. The crowd is infuriated by this deception, leaving the Smiling Dead at the mercy of an angry mob.

Trivia[]

  • As seen from the flashback in which Mel accidentally reveals herself as a human to Jack, Breadhead sleeps in a bread bin.
  • Breadhead is the only character of the main cast whose name had a change in translation. Most of the time, it is a words-to-words translation of his original name, however, there are a few exceptions.
    • In Spanish, he is named Pancracio, because "pan" means "bread" in Spanish.
    • In the Brazilian Portuguese version, his name is "Desmiolado", a pun in portuguese, since desmiolado can mean both bread without a crumb and someone without a brain.
    • In the French version, his name is "Biscotto", which is the name of an Italian biscuit, as well as a french expression that is used to describe someone with big muscles, which is somewhat fitting since Breadhead is the strongest member of the Smiling Dead.
  • By the looks of a YouTube short displaying the animation loops for the show's main characters' walking & running cycles posted by GLITCH, Breadhead appears to be roughly twice the height of Mel.
