Brendan Grant is the overarching antagonist of the 1995 action thriller Nick of Time.

He was portrayed by Peter Strauss.

Biography[]

Brendan is the husband of the actual Governor of California Eleanor Grant. At some point, he fomented a complot to assassinate her during a speech at the Bonaventure Hotel and hired the hitmen Mr. Smith and Ms. Jones.

His first apparition in the movie proper is when Gene Watson enters in the pair’s room with the governor’s assistant. They warns him and one of his friends of the conspiracy. Grant pretends to not believe this at first, but Watson shows him a pistol Smith gave him. Brendan’s friend calls Smith to see if it is. The hitman “confirms” it by shooting the assistant. He then knocked Watson out after a brief fight.

The governor’s spouse talks with Smith and the other man about the conspiracy. It’s implied the scheme comes from a weapon organization disillusioned by the Governor who, according to it, doesn’t keep her promises as she should.

The Governor is eventually informed of the complot and not what to believe, she still talks to her husband to tell she cancels her speech. But she soon notices that Brendan is acting suspiciously about Krista's whereabouts, telling he had sent her to an errand. Brendan strongly insists that she recite the speech as a last one. She reluctantly agrees.

Grant introduces the Governor in a first speech to a ballroom. She begins to speak and Gene pulls out his gun, but decides to betray Smith and shoots him instead. This sets off a panic in the ballroom, causing chaos. Smith tries to assassinate Eleanor himself but one of the staff members interferes and takes the ball instead. Eleanor lost consciousness. Believing her dead and the plot to be a success, Brendan rejoices and talks to himself about this, only to discover to his horror that she has regained consciousness. Having heard him rejoice, she now knows the truth. Brendan withdraws, depressed by the failure of the assassination. He is later arrested and put under investigation for his role.
