Biography[]
Brett Linton was a serial rapist and junkie who was successfully convicted for his crimes by the crown prosecutor at the time, Luke Harris. He served eight years in prison, kicking his drug habit before being released, when he started to receive therapy from Dr. Dan Fraser. Linton later discovers Luke Harris, now a police inspector and Head of the Undercover and Special Investigations units, visiting Fraser, and later confronts Harris, telling him to watch his back. Some time later, Linton breaks into Fraser’s office and steals only one item; Harris’ medical file, which Linton discovers that Harris has bipolar disorder. He sends a letter to Harris with a copy of the first page of his file, before later agreeing to meet with Harris at Queens Park. There, Linton begins his blackmail towards Harris, demanding $50,000 from him in order to get his file back. Harris later gets the money, but Linton then mentions how his place was trashed prior to their previous meeting, and that the neighbour described someone matching Harris identity was responsible for it, before preparing to leave without handing back Harris’ file. Harris grabs Linton and punches him in the stomach, prompting Linton to threaten to go to the cops if Harris keeps it up. Harris responds by telling Linton that he’s not getting a cent.
Harris later receives a fax from Linton, and they meet yet again at an abandoned aquatic centre, where Linton proceeds to mock Harris about what is described in his file, including his recent actions such as his abandoned murder attempt on Peter Church, as well as mockingly referencing Harris’ girlfriend Angie Piper and his mother, before telling Harris that the price to get his file back has now increased to $70,000. Harris again gets the money for him some time later, but Linton suddenly decides that he doesn’t want the money after all, and tells Harris that he’ll let him know what he actually needs sometime soon.
Linton is later brought in for questioning by Brian Gray, who suspects that he is responsible for several rapes that recently took place, as they seem to match the same pattern as Linton’s previous rapes. Linton organizes another meeting with Harris, and tells him that he wants him to get Gray to back off, but Harris refuses, telling Linton that it would be perverting the course of justice. Linton then threatens to send a copy of Harris’ psychiatric reports to newspaper journalists, prompting Harris to threaten to go to the assistant commissioner to out himself, seemingly willing to sacrifice his career in order to get Linton out of his life, unaware that Gray’s unit had Linton under surveillance and have photographs of Harris meeting with Linton, causing Harris to partially convince Gray to back off. However, Harris breaks into Linton’s house once again and gets samples of Linton’s DNA, which matches the DNA for the rapes, prompting Harris to tell Gray to put the focus of the investigation solely on Linton.
Meanwhile, Linton gets a journalist to visit Police HQ to question Harris about his medical records, but Harris gets Church to talk to her instead. However, Linton’s meddling has managed to cause Harris to stop taking his medication, causing him to suffer from paranoia. Linton then begins to stalk Angie, before later meeting her with the false premise of buying her car. The next day, Linton, disguised in a balaclava, breaks into Angie’s place while she is there and attacks her at knifepoint intending to rape her. However, she manages to fight him off, forcing him to flee when Church arrives. Angie later realizes that Linton was responsible for her attack when Gray shows her a prison mugshot of him. Harris soon finds out about this, and proceeds to track Linton down to a hotel. Harris knocks on the door, and Linton briefly opens it, before noticing Harris outside and shuts it straight away, but Harris breaks the lock on the door and forces himself in with a gun, seemingly shooting and killing Linton.
However, sometime after Harris’ wedding to Angie and his later stay in psychiatric care, Linton is revealed to be alive, confronting Harris at the hospital and attempts to kill him, causing Harris to freak out. He later breaks into Harris’ house and kidnaps Angie, taking her to the location where he committed his first rape, in an abandoned factory in Oak Park. Once there, he ties Angie up a deep-water pool with the intent of drowning her, while telling her that he wouldn’t have gotten this far if Harris had paid him in the first place. However, Angie proceeds to hurl insults towards him, prompting him to gag her with a rope to stop her from talking, before turning the water on and leaving her to die. Linton then leaves the room, and heads towards the other end of the factory, where he is confronted by Harris at gunpoint, demanding to know where Angie is. However, Linton manages to persuade Harris to put the gun down by mentioning that he has two minutes to find Angie, otherwise she may drown. Linton then manages to lock Harris in the room, before returning to Angie’s location to find the pool completely submerged in water. Linton leans closer to see if Angie’s body is under the water, but he can’t see anything. Linton is then suddenly attacked by Angie, who had escaped from the pool earlier during Linton’s confrontation with Harris, and the two fight until Linton gets the upper hand and punches Angie in the stomach, he then prepares to strangle Angie, but is suddenly shot in the head and killed by Harris, who along with Church and Leo Flynn, rescues Angie.
Despite Linton’s death, his actions does leave a lasting impact on Angie and Harris’ relationship in the end, as Angie breaks up with him shortly afterwards.
