“ | HEY! How are we doing on tears? | „ |
The Brewmaster is the secondary antagonist of the Oddworld series.
He was the interim office head of the SoulStorm Brewery 401 in Abe's Exoddus, as well as serving as the full-time head of the Soulstorm Brewery and Projekt (sic) Soulstorm during the titular game.
Personality and Appearance[]
The Brewmaster is a proud and scientific Glukkon, who spends most of his time improving the formula of Soulstorm Brew. He is deeply defensive of his work, considering it flawless; any perceived deficiencies are considered sabotage. He also considers himself more important than the other Glukkons, given his role in keeping the work of the Mudokon slaves efficient. Considering the Magog Cartel's financial dependence on Soulstorm Brew, it can be assumed that the Brewmaster is indeed the most influential Glukkon yet seen in Quintology.
The Brewmaster is thinner than other Glukkons, with a noticeably smaller head and less elegant attire. He wears a small pair of bifocals and is clearly wrinkled, especially around the chin area. His ears are wider and shorter than most Glukkons.
The Brewmaster had grey-purple skin, with some green spots. His work attire consisted of a white work coat, stained green from the beer counter. He also wore a gold-framed watch strapped to his left shoulder and black and white wing tips on his hands. Unlike other Glukkons, he was not seen smoking often, although promotional material suggests that he was indeed smoking standard cigarettes at the time. His dental structure, however, is severely disfigured, with exposed gums and very short teeth.
He was a strict taskmaster and was not afraid to go into the workplace and scold his employees. He was passionate and enthusiastic, he really believed in the quality of the product he was creating.
He also speaks with an exaggerated French accent, not to be confused with accents similar to that.
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus[]
Since Molluck, CEO of the Soulstorm brewery, disappeared after the RuptureFarms disaster, and the three high-ranking executives of the SoulStorm Brew project executed by the terrorist Mudokon Abe, the Brewmaster was appointed temporary head of the brewery. Although his previous whereabouts are unknown, his appearance suggests that he was perhaps responsible for quality control, perhaps tasting the beer before shipping to ensure its flavor.
When Abe infiltrated the brewery, he saw the Brewmaster questioning a Slig guard about the progress in producing tears, the secret ingredient in Soulstorm Brew. When the Slig declared that the brewery only produced twenty gallons an hour, the Brewmaster became angry, berating the Slig. He argued that such a small production was inadequate to the quality expected from their beer, which would mean that the final product, in the words of the brewmaster himself, would not only be lighter and less rich in flavour, but would also become soft without be bitter. He sarcastically suggests that the brewery might even start removing the bones of the Mudokons if they couldn't increase the rate of tear production.
He refused to acknowledge the fact that Mudokons were disappearing from the brewery at an exponential rate and ordered the Slig to raise the Tear X-Tractor indicator, which would produce more tears by squeezing the remaining Mudokons and potentially putting their lives at risk.
Good Ending[]
“ | It's not fair, we had twice ze flavourr. | „ |
~ The Brewmaster's last words |
If the player manages to save at least 150 Mudokons, Abe successfully overloads the SoulStorm Brewery's boiler. This action was deemed irreversible and, despite the sound of warning sirens, the brewery was doomed to imminent destruction. In his final moments, the Brewmaster inspects the boiler gauge. When he realizes there's nothing he can do, he jokes, to no one in particular, that life isn't fair, claiming he's finally perfected the concoction, giving it "twice the flavor." The boilers then explode and the Brewmaster burns alive in the explosion that consumes the entire facility.
Bad Ending[]
If the player fails to save at least 150 Mudokons, Abe is ambushed by Alf and his other Mudokon friends, who betray their former "messiah" before leaving him to be found by the Brewmaster and a Slig. He later awakens, tied upside down in a Tear X-Tractor, where the Brewer taunts him, stating that the sight of the terrorist in such a vulnerable state is "a thing of beauty", then goes further, claiming that the tears of Abe the brewers will strive to produce the “best beer ever”. He demands that the machine be turned on at maximum power, and Abe is electrocuted and destroyed by the machine, his soul transfigured into birds, which fly away. The Slig immediately cowers in fear and apologizes in anticipation of the Brewmaster's inevitable reaction, but the Brewmaster, once he recovers from the shock of what he has just witnessed, begins to laugh evilly at the terrorist's death. This prompts the Slig to laugh along, though he does so with clear ambivalence, ending the game from there.
Oddworld: Soulstorm[]
Unlike the original Quintology, here the Brewmaster is not a subordinate of Molluck, but is instead the CEO and high-ranking executive of the Soulstorm Brewery. He seems to gain a lot more respect than Molluck, especially after the RuptureFarms fire. His first appearance is in the form of a videotape that Abe acquires from a dying Mudokon and plays it inside the Slig Barracks Comm Tower.
This tape shows the Brewmaster explaining the benefits of Soulstorm Brew to investors, unintentionally revealing to Abe the sinister effects of this titular beverage. The Brewmaster is perhaps the most adamant Glukkon regarding Molluck's blame in the Rupture Farms disaster. Even as things unravel for Mudos' other factories, he continues to blame Molluck for spreading false rumors, even as his own beer begins to attract attention. When Soulstorm Brewery itself is also infiltrated by Abe, the Brewmaster continues to insist that the Mudokon revolution is Molluck's work, convincing Baron Morguer and Ludwig von Aslik to commit their Slig forces to quell the "false rebellion". Meanwhile, Molluck's Chauffeur Slig conveys this accusation to Molluck, who orders his Sligs to execute the Brewmaster and his co-conspirators.
