Mafia II[]
Joe Barbaro and Vito Scaletta were ordered by Henry Tomasino to deal with a debtor. The man had borrowed money from Henry to start a jewelry store and he was past due on his payments. Henry said that Vito and Joe will rob the store, which will get the debtor up to speed. The store was inside a shopping mall. Vito suggested doing it quietly, where he and Joe would enter the mall disguised as telephone repairmen to avoid drawing suspicion. That night, the pair quietly grab as many jewels as they can. Despite Vito's good planning, it was ruined by a ramraiding into the mall which tripped the alarm. Several men with Irish accents emerged from the cars, and Joe recognized one of them as Brian O'Neill, the gang leader. O'Neill quickly recognized Joe, having met some time before, and they were on bad terms with each other. O'Neill demanded to know why Barbaro was robbing the store the Irish gang had targeted. Vito retorted that the Irish stuck out like sore thumbs as their bullcharging brought attention to themselves. This proved true as soon sirens were heard and the Empire Bay police entered the mall, resulting in a three-way gun battle between O'Neill's gang, Vito, and the police. Vito and Joe escaped by heading to the roof and tiptoeing to an adjacent building, which a policeman refused to pursue them, commenting how the he does not get paid enough to chase after people on icy rooves during winter. Brian O'Neill is later seen handcuffed along with other Irish gang members who were apprehended by the EBPD.
Later on, when Vito got arrested for illegal distribution of gas stamps, he ended up in the same prison as Brian O'Neill. When O'Neill sees Joe Barbaro's friend in the prison yard, he decks him which turns into a brawl. However, this gets stopped by the guards, who throw Vito and Brian into (separate) solitary confinement cells. It turns out Brian was scheduled to have a fight with Pepe Costa, a Vinci Soldato imprisoned along with Frank Vinci's consigliere Leo Galante. Galante, who saw Vito fight, conscripts him to be Pepe's sparring mate and bets on a couple of fights where Vito takes on some black and Oriental inmates. The big fight does not happen as Brian ordered several of his Irish friends to assault Pepe, breaking his arm. Leo orders Vito to deal with Brian. What starts out as a bare knuckle brawl soon turns deadly as Brian produces a shank with intent to fight Vito to the death. Vito turns the table on Brian by driving the shank into his belly, ending his life.
6 years after his death, Brian's cousin Mickey Desmond succeeded him as the leader of the Irish mob in Empire Bay. Mickey ordered his underlings to torch Vito's residence in the middle of the night out of vengeance for killing Brian. Vito flees the burning house and tracks Mickey.
