Brian Roscoe is a fictional character and supporting antagonist of the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street, appearing only in December 1988.

He was portrayed by Rob Dixon.

Biography[]

Brian Roscoe lived with his wife Ange and their two daughters. They had lived in a dilapidated house on Murray Street before the council moved them to Turner House in October 1988. Their new accommodation was little better, being on the twelfth floor with no working lift and in a rough area. Roscoe also lost his job a month later, leaving him with mental health issues, and became increasingly desperate to get his family moved.

Roscoe made an appointment with Deirdre Barlow, his local councillor. Deirdre forgot the appointment and tried to reschedule but Roscoe convinced her to let him visit at home, where he explained his concerns. He would later try and ring her at home early in the morning, before calling round while she was out and convincing her pre-teen daughter Tracy to let him wait for her there. He recalled that he grew up in a similar house and said he shouldn't have been so quick to leave. Deirdre's husband Ken turned up and was furious to find Roscoe alone with Tracy, telling him not to turn up without making an appointment. Roscoe later came back to see Deirdre but she told him he couldn't be rehoused before Christmas. Roscoe was furious, saying his marriage was falling apart with being stuck together in the flat and blaming the council for his life going wrong.

On Christmas Eve, Roscoe ended up drinking in the Rovers Return and tried to get Alec Gilroy to give him a shift over Christmas. Alec was reluctant to employ someone he didn't know, even when Roscoe offered Deirdre as a reference. That night, Deirdre came round to see Roscoe with some Christmas presents she'd bought for his daughters. After briefly trying to hide it, Roscoe admitted that Ange had left him and taken the girls to her parents', where he wasn't welcome. Deirdre spent an hour listening to him, but when she tried to leave, Roscoe first took her glasses and then, after returning them, barred her exit, insisting she keep him company over Christmas.

Deirdre made several attempts to reason with Roscoe, being bewildered by his claim that she lived in luxury when she only lived in an ordinary terraced house. Finally, she lost patience with his self-pity, telling him there were people in the world who would consider his home a paradise. She threatened to throw his television out the window if he didn't let it go. Roscoe stepped forward to grab it off her and she took the opportunity to flee through the unguarded door.

Deirdre did not see Roscoe again but the police later informed her that he had turned up at his in-laws' and got into an argument that ended with him hitting his father-in-law. He was charged with assault and kidnapping.
