Javi: Lucky bastard.
Brinker Martin: Damn right!
~ Javi and Brinker Martin regarding Tyler Locke after Dodge begins flirting with him instead of them.

Brinker Martin is the head of the school hockey team at Mathson Academy, a close friend of Javi and Eden Hawkins, and a minor antagonist in the first and second seasons of Locke & Key.

He was portrayed by Kolton Stewart.

Biography[]

Origin[]

Trust me, the grass doesn't get any greener.
~ Brinker Martin reassuring Tyler Locke by hinting about his past.

While his eventual best friend Javi once cited that he had a stress-free childhood, Brinker Martin may have been in the same camp since he metaphorically cited that the grass didn't become greener for it.

New arrivals in Matheson[]

See, you're softening up already, bro.
~ Brinker pettily reprimanding Tyler.

Brinker is first seen alongside Javi at a hockey game, approaching Tyler.

After someone messed with his car paint, he and Javi entered the convenience store with Tyler and he pressured him into making off with beer, in spite of the trio's shared status as minors. Tyler, realizing too late what Javi's plan was, was almost caught when Javi shoved the cashier as they made their way out. Tyler never caught up with Brinker as he and his friend made off with the drink.

While watching a hockey game with Tyler, he called out Chad Garland as one in favor with Coach Rizz, citing his perversion to be extreme. He likely witnessed Chad's fistfight with Tyler.

Dodge in The Black Door 11

Brinker Martin meets Dodge at Mr. Ridgeway's remembrance party.

He and his friends started undergoing a process where every three days they assumed an all-meat diet, with apparently pleasing results. He was also present at Joe's remembrance party, where he briefly encountered the extremely beautiful and mysterious Dodge, taking an immediate sexual interest in her even before it became clear she was focused on Tyler rather than nothing in particular. Watching her and Tyler from a short distance, Brinker agreed with Javi's citation that Tyler was astonishingly lucky. Although Javi tried to distract Tyler with the arrival of Jackie Veda, Dodge proceeded to leave, much to Brinker's disappointment.

Losing close friends[]

Bro, seriously! I didn't steal it, Mr. Bennett; I don't know who did.
~ Brinker defending his innocence to Mr. Bennett.

Months later, Brinker still hung out with Javi and they would play table hockey together. Remembering him and how he'd ogled her, Dodge sent an anonymous message to Josh Bennett claiming that he had knowledge of a missing artifact. Following this lead, Mr. Bennett confronted him and Javi, but Javi's playful reaction made their teacher assume Brinker was innocent and Javi was the one who did it and blamed him for sending the anonymous message. While it is left vague how much Brinker knew about Javi's demonic transformation and means of death, he would later try to reconnect with Eden, but she insisted she cared nothing for him. Brinker reluctantly went his own way, leaving his fate a mystery.

Personality[]

Brinker Martin: Heck yeah, Eden! Locke stock and two smokin' titties! Yeah!
Javi: You always take it too far, man.
~ Brinker Martin and Javi mentioning their close friend Eden Hawkins.

Brinker is reticent and a man of few words, and yet his personality is clearly more or less the same as Javi or Eden Hawkins. Being extremely condescending and disrespectful, he shares his friends' delight in looking down on a lot of students and taking pleasure in putting them down. Brinker was, however, interested in Tyler due to his hockey skills and ability to woo Eden overnight, implying he respected strength. However, unlike Eden he did not mistakenly make enemies of powerful people nor did he display any redeeming qualities. He was as big of a pervert as his best friend, but took things too far to the point that even Javi called him out on it. It was also known that he considered both Eden and Dodge to be extremely attractive. Ironically, he had no idea she went to Matheson Academy too and was absolutely agitated by Eden's antics, so she probably never would have liked him or Javi at all, even as a friend.

Trivia[]

  • Unlike Chad Garland, Brinker, despite his hedonism, is not directly cast in a villainous light as he and Tyler get along for the most part and he always leaves the Savinis alone.
