Briza Do'Urden is a minor antagonist in R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as a major antagonist of the Dark Elf Trilogy. She was the oldest daughter of Matron Mother Malice, and first daughter of drow House Do'Urden. She was the most sadistic member of her family and the most fanatically loyal to Lolth. As such, she took it upon herself to make sure that the males of her family, and anyone else who crossed her knew their place. She was killed by House Baenre after briefly becoming Matron Mother of House Do'Urden.
Appearance[]
Like all drow, Briza had ebony skin and white hair. She was very strongly built and unusually tall for Drow standards.
Personality[]
Briza was sadistic and temperamental. She was known to enjoy brutally beat any male with the slightest provocation and even look down on her sister Vierna for not doing the same. Even by drow standards, she worshipped Lolth and her rules an impractical amount, and flew into a violent whenever anyone did or said something that contradicted the drow way of life. Although she was dangerous due to her skill with a whip and fanaticism to the Spider Queen, Briza wasn't as intelligent as her mother of some of the other matron mothers, constantly letting anger get in the way of reason, and accidentally sentencing herself to death at the hands of the Baenres by killing her mother.
Biography[]
Briza was born to Malice and Rizzen Do'Urden when Malice was about a century old, born around the same time as her brother Nalfein. She attended Arach Tintlith to learn to become a cleric of Lolth and seemed to be involved in the childhoods of her younger siblings Maya, Vierna, and Dinin. She seemed to take it upon herself to teach the males of the house their place by beating them (mostly Rizzen).
During House Do'Urden's attack on House DeVir, Briza helped her mother give birth to her third son and used her clerical power to support the Do'Urden troops. When the boy was born, Malice named him Drizzt, and prepared to kill him, but Nalfein was killed at that moment, making Drizzt the second boy of House Do'Urden, and therefore not meant to be sacrificed. Briza asked her mother if she could be the one to raise her brother, but Malice gave that duty to Vierna. Nevertheless, Briza micromanaged her little sister, encouraging her to be more physically abusive towards Drizzt.
Shortly thereafter, Briza was made an official cleric of Lolth, and participated in the sacrifice of the weapons master Zaknafein, which prompted Drizzt to leave the city. She also participated in the war with House Hun'ett, which House Do'Urden emerged victorious from. After the war, Malice realized that she was never going to be able to get into Lolth's favor unless Drizzt was killed for his heresy and ordered Briza and Dinin to track him down and kill him. The pair did, and Briza had a long battle with her brother, losing two of her fingers in the process and failing to kill him.
Briza and Dinin returned to Menzoberranzan, where Malice used all of her power to make one final attempt on Drizzt's life. This also failed, and completely destroy the matron of House DO'Urden. Seeing her mother in this weakened state, Briza took the opportunity to kill her. However, right afterwards she was told by Dinin that House Baenre was coming to wipe them out for failure to kill Drizzt. Briza briefly tried to fight them off but was quickly killed by the Baenre soldiers.
