Dr. Broderick Castle, born as Alexander Leighton-Asbury, is the main antagonist in "Game", the first episode in Season 4 of Endeavour.
He was portrayed by Chris Fulton.
Biography[]
Castle/Alexander was the son of the late Dr. Leighton-Asbury and the brother of the late Penelope Leighton-Asbury, whom he perversely in love with. After being scared of her brother's sick feelings, Penelope committed suicide to escape from her brother's incestuous fantasy, leaving a suicide note inside her doll. He also felt disgusted over the wounded soldiers under his father's care, believing they were monsters.
Alexander's twisted feelings to his sister were discovered by Dr. Leighton-Asbury's maid, Ms. Palfrey, and was driven out by his parents and became raised by his grandparents, known as the Kings, in Scotland. The news of Alexander's event was written and reported by Dorothea Frazil.
After living in a peaceful life, Alexander later changed his name into Broderick Castle and went to work in the academy of Lovelace, before he became mentally ill. He later had a conflict with his colleague, Dr. Richard Nielson, who discovered about Castle's own insanity and tried to drive him out of Lovelace.
During the process, however, Castle had developed a split personality based on both Penelope and the computer JASON/JCN he had worked on. His split personality had caused his illusions, including seeing the computer sending him a message of "KILL THEM". Fearing that he would lose both his job and his (imaginary) sister, Castle decided to kill those who believed that had wronged him.
Goaded by his split personality, Castle had gone on to a serial killing spree to murder everyone who had been obstacles between him and his sister's twisted romance, starting with Dr. Nielson, whom he drowned in Thames River. The second victim was Ms. Palfrey, his father's maid that discovered his twisted feelings towards Penelope, who was beaten and subsequently drowned in a bathtub. The third victim was Edison Daniel Smalls, who was his former friend that once joined the same chess club with him. Castle killed Edison because of their argument when they were younger, which was started by Edison after rebuking Castle/Alexander's for what he did to Penelope. Both Ms. Palfrey and Edison were dragged into Cowley Pool, respectively in a bathtub and a swimming pool.
Taking his late father's residence as his house, Castle made death masks modeled after his victims' face in tribute to Penelope, which was also a ripoff to his father's facial prosthesis to the wounded soldiers under his care. Those death masks were placed on the same wall where Dr. Leighton-Asbury's facial prosthesis was made. He also left several clues that pointed to his next victim. After Tessa Knight reported the murder by stealing Morse's notebook, Castle ambushed her and killed her for trying to know too much.
After Frazil discovered more information, she tried to warn Morse and Thursday, but was subsequently attacked and kidnapped by Castle. Much later, Morse deduced the killer's true identity through the message left by Castle, not long after he attacked Tessa Knight, which spelled "RXN Check Meat". Meanwhile, Castle tied Frazil up in his car and drove her away. When Frazil woke up, she recognized Castle as Alexander. Castle revealed that he didn't forget about Frazil either, and he wanted her to die for insinuating about his relationship with Penelope.
About the fourth message left by Castle, Morse explained that it was actually a misspelled version of "Rook Takes Knight, Checkmate", and said it was a pun on Castle since the chess piece "Rook" was also known as "Castle". Above all, this message had been misspelled, just like the second message "Denial" (left after the death of Ms. Palfrey) which was actually "Daniel", referring to Castle's third victim, Edison Daniel Smalls. This became the crucial proof that Castle was the culprit, since he had been constantly misspelling things at times.
Morse also deduced the meaning behind Castle's first and third messages. The salmon fly (known as "Minister's Dog" and, in a more vulgar way, "Vicar's Bitch") actually referred to Ms. Palfrey, who was a devout Christian. As for the empty envelopes Castle left in Cowley Pool's storeroom, it was an implication of Frazil for being a newspaper editor, though the killer later killed Tessa, a journalist, out of pragmacy.
Morse and Thursday immediately tracked down Castle and drove behind him, to the same river where Penelope took her own life, knowing this would be the place where Castle would murder Frazil. Meanwhile, Frazil freed herself and tried to strangle Castle, causing a car crash. Thursday managed to save Frazil before the car exploded, whilst Morse tracked down Castle and confronted him.
After questioning about Castle's motive about killing Dr. Nielson, Morse pointed out that Penelope was gone because she was afraid of her brother, so much that she took her own life. Castle was lost and decided to drown himself to be together with his sister. Nevertheless, Morse followed him and dragged him from the river, saving his life. Castle was later arrested by the police for murder.
