Brooke Mathison, also known by her aliases Claudine Poyet and Angela Lindsay, was a major antagonist during the first season of the ABC/Netflix series Designated Survivor. She was a high-ranking member of the True Believers who blackmailed Jason Atwood into confessing to the murder of Majid Nassar.

History

Origin

Brooke Mathison was born to a soldier deployed in Seoul, South Korea. Her father was later discharged from duty for unknown reasons. Brooke Mathison's life went in many different directions, popping up all over the United States before allying with the True Believers, frequently meeting with them at a missile silo owned by her leader and Browning Reed CEO, Patrick Lloyd.

Under the alias Claudine Poyet, Mathison posed as a contractor and began meeting with the White House Chief of Staff Charles Langdon, Langdon had been going through a divorce and showed romantic interest in her, and although she clearly did not return his feelings, she used that affection to get information from him. Starting off with little things pertaining to infrastructure, she eventually coerced him into giving her information on the Capitol's threat assessment, namely information File 12-80C and Room 105. She gave this information to her direct superior, Jay Whitaker (which he used to blackmail Langdon into naming HUD Secretary Tom Kirkman the designated survivor at the next State of the Union address), as well as Peter MacLeish in order to ensure his survival and allow him to be their puppet in the White House.

Season 1

Sometime after the Capitol bombing, Peter MacLeish, who was about to be named Kirkman's vice president, met with Mathison about their upcoming plans. Unsure of his actions in all of it, MacLeish asked her how many more good people had to die, to which Mathison replied just one (referring to President Kirkman).

Brooke Mathison kidnapped Jason Atwood's son Luke and used him as a bargaining chip to force Atwood into confessing to the murder of Majid Nassar (which was actually done by Nestor Lozano). Despite doing exactly what he was ordered to do, Mathison backed out of their deal and murdered Luke, dumping his body in a river where it would eventually be found by authorities.

Later, under the alias Angela Lindsay, she went to the prison where Hannah Wells was being held, posing at her attorney and demanding to see her 'client'. However, she was informed Wells was already released, where she would already be in pursuit of Peter MacLeish. Mathison texted Beth MacLeish to warn her Wells was free and unable to be found, causing Beth to panic and kill her own husband and then herself to avoid being prosecuted for their crimes.

Hannah Wells eventually got Langdon's confession and used it to track Mathison down. Wells and Atwood confronted her, but Mathison had managed to subdue Wells before Atwood held her at gunpoint. Mathison mocked Atwood and tried to goad him into shooting her before Wells reassured him that they would make her pay in court. However, Mathison had a firearm hidden on her and pulled it on Wells, forcing Atwood to shoot Mathison dead, avenging his son. They took a USB drive off her body that contained several simulated attacks on US landmarks, allowing them to come closer to stopping the True Believers for good.
