Biography[]
In 1939, the St. Jude's Reformatory for Boys is a ruthless Irish school for juvenile delinquents. Grey, gloomy and ruled by the sadistic Brother John the school prefers cruel punishment to soft rehabilitation to make the boys become productive members to society again. He established a wall with a red line to separate boys in two age group and those that step on the red line will be severely beaten even by accident.
Spanish Civil War veteran William Franklin comes at the school as the new teacher and is appalled by the sadistic treatments of the boys by Brother John and another priest called Brother Mac who molests the boys in secret. After trying to stop Brother John from hitting one of the boy for burping, Brother John sadistically and vindictively forced the boys to stand naked in the middle of the night to get back at William for defying his authority.
With William's help and gentle gestures, the boys show progress in literacy and manners. During Christmas, two brothers overcome with emotion embracing each other in a wall and are severely beaten, causing one of the boys Liam to have enough and defy Brother John. As the Brother John prepares to whip Liam for his defiance, William has enough and comes to punch Brother John and brings the injured brothers to be healed.
Consumed with blind rage and vengeance, Brother John lures Liam into refectory and beats him up until he died. Seeing the brutal beating, Brother Mac reaches his limit and goes to William to confess about the beating. After realizing Liam is dead, Brother John horrifies with what he has done and reciting a verse in the Bible like a maniac until William comes at his office and savagely beats him to an inch of his life.
Because of his action has gone too far, the church authority removes Brother John and Brother Mac from the reformatory permanently according to the epilogue it says that Brother John was sent away to Africa while Brother Mac somehow escaped Ireland and fled to the United States. 45 years Later St Jude's Reformatory closed for good.
Trivia[]
It's highly likely had Brother John and Brother Mac's crimes were reported to the Police, instead of being removed from St Jude's Reformatory by the Church Authority the Police would've arrested the 2 evil brothers and hauled them away. Also if Brother John and Brother Mac stood before the courts they would've been given a lengthy prison sentence alongside having to pay hefty fines for compensation and St Jude's Reformatory would've also been shut down for good.
