You can kill the prophet, but you can't kill the god! Your chance to warn the Earth has come and gone. We are coming. We are hungry. We are here.
~ A Brethren Moon to Isaac Clarke in an illusion.

The Brethren Moons, also known as the Brother Moons or simply the Blood Moons, are the overarching antagonists of the Dead Space franchise. They are colossal moon-sized Necromorphs who, it is discovered, are the true source of the signals emitted from the Markers.

They're believed to be the final stage in the life cycle of the Necromorph race and are colossal sized Lovecraftian entities that exist all across the universe, infecting and consuming entire worlds and species as a means of satisfying their bottomless hunger, as well as propagating their species. Because of their nature and agenda, they serve as the de-facto gods of the Unitology cult religion.

The voices of one of the Brother Moons are provided by Chris Fries.

History[]

Origins[]

The true origin of the Brethren Moon remains a mystery, as it is unknown where they truly came from, or even how the first moon was created to begin with.

What is known is that they are a species of moon-sized creatures based throughout the known universe that consume all organic life on any world they come across using the signals and powers of their Markers. Black Markers are created within the Brethren’s own bodies before being sent throughout the universe to land on various worlds.

Earth was one such world, with a Black Marker landing on the planet 65 million years ago. It would not be discovered until the early 23rd Century, and for good reason.

It's unknown if the Brethren Moon inherently know that intelligent life exists on a world they send their Marker to, or if they simply sent them in any direction across space, hoping that they would impact with a suitable planet. It's also possible that the Markers themselves are responsible for the evolution of intelligent life on Earth and elsewhere as theorized by Unitologist militant, Jacob Danik, who in the end was proven correct in this assumption; the Markers arrive on a world and gently coax the native species into higher and higher levels of advancement, guiding them into a space-faring future, but also one where resources are extremely scarce…

After the chosen species has reached a sufficient level of technological advancement, the Markers will begin to let out an electromagnetic signal originating from the Brethren Moons themselves, using it to attract the attention of that species. The signal greatly effects the natives minds, which manifests itself in other organic beings as dementia or a compulsion to create new Markers through artificial methods, such as the Red Marker created by humanity in replication of the original Black Marker.

Because of the powers of the Markers and how much energy that they individually hold, attempts to replicate the Markers inevitably begin to take hold. Research is performed, and perhaps for a time, the artifacts can be used to harvest energy as a means of providing resources to meet high demands. This was the idea behind the Red Marker on Earth following the depletion of natural resources by the 23rd Century.

The signal, however, also serves another purpose; it can alter necrotic tissue at the molecular level, causing the reanimation of corpses into horrific bio-recombinant creatures known as Necromorphs.

After the Necromorphs have killed and infected most of the planet's population, many Markers all across the globe will ignite and begin a Convergence event. Using unknown gravitic manipulation methods, living, dead, and Necromorphic tissue is flung into the stratosphere. where they begin to fuse and ultimately form a new Brethren Moon, making Convergence the birthing process for the entire species. The moon will not only absorb organic tissue, but it will also absorb parts of the planet itself, which helps it to create its colossal moon-sized shell.

The creature is only finalized when the creators of the duplicate Markers are absorbed into it along with the rest of the planet's biosphere, while the Marker itself levitates towards the center and heart of the Moon to broadcast its signal to the rest of the Brethren, revealing its completion and joining the wider network. It's unknown what happens to the Moon after it absorbs all organic life on its birth site, but it's assumed that it moves on and heads toward the next planet to find a new source of organic life and a new source of food to maintain itself.

Dead Space 3[]

During the events of Dead Space 3, Isaac Clarke comes to realize that the Marker signals that Markers receive are a distress call from the incomplete moon of Tau Volantis, which was forced into a hibernation state when the alien race it was attempting to lure and assimilate built a machine to freeze over the entire planet, preventing the monstrosity from becoming whole and continuing on in the galaxy.

As a result, the Moon began deploying distress signals through its alien Markers, hoping to bring new organic beings to disable the machine preventing its growth, which would allow it to continue its assimilation of the galaxy. The faux Markers that Isaac had been facing were attempting to continue the "Brethren Chain" of Moons by circumventing the hibernating Tau Volantis Moon. He also realizes that if the moon is freed from its frozen hibernation, any location within the galaxy with a still active Marker will begin the ultimate Convergence, continuing the growth of the Tau Volantis Moon.

The Moon's completion would then awaken the other completed Brethren Moons which would subsequently head for the Marker locations and devour all organic life present, resulting in the inevitable destruction of humanity and possibly all life in the galaxy.

In the final chapter, the Unitology terrorist Jacob Danik shuts down the machine keeping the moon frozen and effectively awakens the slumbering creature. However, Isaac manages to reconfigure the alien machine and destroy the Tau Volantis Moon by using the machine to pull the massive Necromorph into the planet's surface. The Moon's destruction causes all the Markers to cease broadcasting their signals, ending the danger they pose to the rest of the galaxy. However, in the Awakened DLC, it is confirmed that before the Tau Volantis moon was destroyed, it warned the rest of its brothers about the danger humanity posed to them before its death, causing them to invade Isaac's mind to distract him and the survivors long enough to make their way to Earth to consume it.
