Good to day to you sir.
~ Brother Mouzone to Cheese after shooting him.

Brother Mouzone is a recurring character in HBO's The Wire.

He is a skilled hitman from an unnamed New York crime syndicate who initially comes to Baltimore after being hired by Avon Barksdale to keep rival dealers out of Barksdale territory. Although it's not confirmed, his clothing and mannerisms suggest he is a member of the Nation of Islam.

He is portrayed by Michael Potts.

Personality[]

Brother Mouzone enjoys reading intellectual magazines like Harper's and has an incredibly polite manner of speech no matter the situation; he says "good day to you sir" to "Mister" Cheese immediately after shooting him. He retains his composure even in the face of death, calmly telling Omar Little that he's made peace with God as Omar prepares to finish him off. His actions are dictated by logic, hence why he's able to easily put aside his animosity with Omar after learning that they were both manipulated by Stringer Bell.

Despite being a cold-blooded hitman with numerous murders to his name, Brother Mouzone is not without honor. He finds overly brutal torture to be distasteful, telling Omar that what happened to Brandon wasn't his style. When he captures and interrogates Dante, he just roughs him up a bit, showing that this remark wasn't a bluff.

Unlike most of the other gangsters, Brother Mouzone shows no prejudice against gay people and even mocks Lemar for his visceral homophobia.

Biography[]

Season 2[]

When Avon Barksdale goes to prison, he hires Brother Mouzone to keep Proposition Joe's dealers off Barksdale turf in his absence. Unbeknownst to Avon, his right-hand Stringer Bell had made an agreement with Proposition Joe that allowed Joe's dealers to sell drugs in the Barksdale towers.

When Brother arrives at the towers, he politely informs Cheese, Proposition Joe's nephew, that he needs to stop dealing in the towers. Cheese, who is confused because he thought he was allowed to deal in the towers, plays along for a moment before insulting Mouzone. Mouzone responds in a more threatening but still calm manner, after which Cheese attempts to attack him, but Mouzone immediately shoots Cheese in the shoulder with a shell filled with rat-shot; painful, but non-lethal. Mouzone then tells Cheese that the next bullet in his gun is a copper jacketed hollow point bullet, which is most certainly lethal. Cheese and his fellow dealers promptly flee the scene.

While Brother Mouzone fulfilled Avon's goal of keeping non-Barksdale dealers out of the towers with little effort, it impeded Stringer and Proposition Joe's secret plan to divide the drug traffic in the towers between their organizations. Prop Joe, being well aware of Brother Mouzone's fearsome reputation as a hitman, wants to abandon the plan until Mouzone leaves. Stringer, on the other hand, thinks that Omar Little would be able to take out Mouzone if manipulated into doing so.

Stringer arranges a meeting with Omar in which he admits that he authorized the murder of Omar's boyfriend Brandon, but claims that he had no plans to Brandon to be tortured beforehand and that his torture was Mouzone's doing. Omar, believing Stringer's lie, tracks down Mouzone and shoots him in the gut. As he prepares to deliver the finishing shot, Omar realizes that he had been manipulated by Stringer and saves Mouzone's life by calling an ambulance.

Stringer, unaware that Omar had deduced the truth, visits Brother Mouzone in the hospital, which causes Mouzone to realize that it had to be Stringer who set him up. Mouzone says nothing of this, however, and simply tells Stringer that their agreement is absolved and that he will be returning to New York.

Season 3[]

Brother Mouzone returns to Baltimore with his bodyguard Lemar in search for Omar. Lemar goes undercover in various gay bars in an attempt to find Omar or his boyfriend, but his efforts prove unsuccessful until Vinson helps him locate Omar's boyfriend, Dante. Mouzone and Lemar abduct Dante, bring him back to their motel, and rough him up until he reveals Omar's whereabouts.

Mouzone soon finds Omar in a back alley and proposes that they team up to kill Stringer Bell as he had manipulated both of them. Brother Mouzone finds Avon Barksdale and confronts him with the true details of his shooting and demands that he gives Stringer up or lose his reputation with his suppliers. Avon, fearing the collapse of the Barksdale Organization, complies with Mouzone's demands. Omar and Mouzone find Stringer in a building he is developing as part of his plan to move into legal business ventures and shoot him dead.

Mouzone, satisfied, releases Dante and gives Omar his gun to dispose of before returning to New York, never to be seen again.
