“ | I see no reason that we must fight, but I will have no choice if you get in the way of my plan. If you do…I will see you again upon the completion of Gungnir. | „ |
~ Brunhild Eiktobel to Kaori Kanzaki. |
“ | A Valkyrie, hm? Isn’t that just great? All I am is a loser. I was supposedly chosen by the gods, but I’m just a loser that cannot even protect the smile of a small child. But I am a stubborn loser. I will complete Gungnir and use its power to awaken that boy. This is the power of the greatest god. It has to be enough to perform a miracle like that. | „ |
~ Brunhild Eiktobel |
Brunhild Eiktobel, also known as the Mixed-One and Hel, is a major character in the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
She is a Finnish magician who is also a Saint-Valkyrie hybrid, able to use magic of both Norse Mythology and Christianity. She goes on a vengeful crusade and seeks to recreate the legendary lance Gungnir. She serves as Kaori Kanzaki's arch-rival and counterpart.
Appearance[]
Brunhild is a young woman with long and curly blonde hair, white skin and blue eyes. She wears asymmetrical attire, consisting of a hat with decorative feathers on the sides, a white dress with bulky men's pants underneath, and brown boots. She also has protectors on her arms, elbows and knees and also wears a bulletproof vest on her chest. Her outfit gives off the impression of Medieval European armor made using modern materials.
Personality[]
Although she's normally aloof and serious, Brunhild is shown to be very caring and protective of those she's close to, such as her old cabal and Ceillier Flatley, the latter being the only person to show her kindness during her imprisonment. At the same time, she is extremely brutal and ruthless against her enemies. Moreover, she's also highly vindictive towards anyone who harms her loved ones. This is partially influenced by her Valkyrie nature, which allows her to fight for the sake of those she cares about to the point of destruction. Brunhild also proves to be quite sadistic, as she will violently mutilate every single magician who she holds a grudge against.
Due to her inability to save her cabal and Ceillier, Brunhild is rather self-deprecating, deeming herself as nothing but a stubborn loser who is unable to protect a small child's smile. However, she displays some pride in her status as a Valkyrie and detest anything that would tarnish it, such as the idea of Valkyries wearing skimpy outfits. She also isn't above mocking her opponents in an arrogant fashion, best seen when she confronts Gremlin member Hel and calls her an idiot for trying to emulate the Norse goddess, pointing out that she used to be known by that moniker.
In addition to this, Brunhild isn't without any noble traits, as she willingly lends assistance to Necessarius during World War III and later joined Ollerus and his ilk in stopping Gremlin after her knowledge of Gungnir was stolen by the artificial Valkyries. Despite her merciless behavior, Brunhild prefers to avoid unnecessary fights, as shown when she confronted by Kaori Kanzaki and Mikoto Misaka. Furthermore, her main reason for creating Gungnir was to use its divine power to awaken Ceillier from his coma.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Valkyrie-Saint Hybrid: Brunhild is a rare mixture of a Saint and a Valkyrie, which gives her incredible powers. She possesses a Stigma, granting her traits similar to the Son of God as well as a wide variety of powerful blessed and divine abilities. She's also able to channel greater magical power and mana than normal magicians. When her Saint Powers and Valkyrie Powers are at the same level during the Half-Moon, she loses access to both.
- Immense Strength: Brunhild possesses superhuman level of strength, able to overpower an entire group of people effortlessly. She is capable of bending a tanker in two with a single punch and can also swing a sword so fast that it can generate a sonic boom that can cause all the windows of a building to shatter merely by being in the same direction of her swing.
- Immense Speed: Brunhild is incredibly fast, capable of moving at supersonic speeds. She is able to keep up with her fellow Saint, Kaori Kanzaki, and outpace Mikoto Misaka during their battle.
- Immense Durability: Brunhild is very durable and resilient, being able to withstand heavy blows from Kaori Kanzaki, a fellow Saint.
- Supernatural Luck: Brunhild is shown to blessed with abnormal good luck and is naturally successful in almost anything.
- Rune Magic: As a Norse magician, Brunhild is highly knowledgeable in the usage of runes to achieve various magical effects, such as stopping the motion of an arrow or checking to see if a cup has poison on it.
- Attack Spells: Brunhild is able to use attack spells to enhance a weapon's strength and effectiveness. She mainly uses this to support her claymore, increasing its power and sharpness, allowing it to take on Kanzaki's Yuisen spell. She can also apply similar spells to any weapon she picks up.
- Healing Interruption Runes: Brunhild can carve runes inside her opponent's lungs that interfere with natural healing abilities and recovery magic.
- Body Hijacking: Brunhild can use runes to possess other people's bodies and speak through their mouths, likely through a similar method as her healing interruption runes.
- Seal of Sleeping: Using a piece of wood the size of a stamp branded with runes and small incantation, Brunhild can forcibly put people to sleep. By leaving the seal on top of the sleeper's forehead they presumably will continue to sleep unperturbed by anything.
- Blood Circulation Control: By pouring her magical power into herself she can control her own blood circulation. She can use this to cause bruises to gradually vanish.
- Final Rune: The legendary rune, supposedly only Odin knows its true purpose and method of use. Brunhild needs to carve this rune in the core of the planet itself in order to complete her Gungnir Replica's construction. Brunhild can use magic so that the Final Rune is written automatically without any further input from her, but it takes a few hours. Once completed the rune would be indistinguishable from the environment and indestructible like an Original Grimoire, all the while providing Brunhild with an inexhaustible supply of power as all magical and spiritual powers in the world are gathered in the spear.
- Palm Rune: Brunhild can use the rough copy of the Final Rune in a small wooden board she carries in her palm as reference for her automatic writing spell in a mental attack. Any enemy that sees the rune in any way, for example, by her showing her palm to them, will have their mind attacked by the purity of the magic in the rune, which rivals an original Grimoire's hundreds of pages with a single character. Even an experienced magician and Saint like Kanzaki had her consciousness stripped only to realize a few moments later she had fled the scene in an instinctual and unconscious reaction to protect her mind from destruction. She was still under great mental pain from the small glimpse of the rune.

Brunhild's Gungnir
- Gungnir Replica: A three-meter long "spear" made up of an ash tree’s branch at the center with many pieces of steel complexly intertwined around it. In some ways it's like the tip of a spear, but the characteristics of a sword, an ax, and other weapons can be glimpsed as well. It pulsates like a living being and wraps around the ash branch like a snake. Brunhild's version only reached 70% of the possible output, as she couldn't finish writing the Final Rune in time and her nature of a Saint mixed up symbols of the Longinus spear into the weapon, reducing its purity. The trinity of symbols she used for her weather manipulation also reduced the Norse purity of the spear.
- Weapon Destruction: By replicating the myth of Gungnir destroying Balmung, one of the strongest human swords, in a single strike, Brunhild can use the shifting nature of the Replica as a vise to destroy an enemy's weapon touching the spear.
- Weather Manipulation: Brunhild unified all of Gungnir's supposed abilities as a throwing spear in a single system, making it a weapon that can manipulate all kinds of weather and natural disasters, like lightning, tornados, volcanic eruptions, floods, earthquakes, etc; through the combination of three symbols: fire, ice, and frost. Brunhild can use Gungnir to summon white lightning strikes, pure white lava that follows the motions of her spear to attack the enemy like a giant hammer, volcanic eruptions, underground water geysers, large amounts of salt, dozens of stones over five meters tall that fall from the sky, pure white flames, slicing winds, etc.
Abilities[]
- Master Swordswoman: Brunhild is an extremely skilled swordswoman, able to rival Kaori Kanzaki in a battle. She has honed her abilities with the sword through rigorous training. She wields a 1.5m claymore, an exceedingly wide double-edged sword, able to completely bisect an enemy in two, armor and all, with brute strength.
- Skilled Combatant: While she mostly relies on her sword, Brunhild is highly capable in hand-to-hand combat, able to go toe to toe with Kanzaki and Mikoto Misaka.
Equipment[]
- Claymore Sword: A large 1.5 m blade that Brunhild wields with relative ease.
