A knight who served the kings of Daein. He was one of the legendary warriors known as the Great Riders. He gave his life for his country.
~ Bryce's character description in Radiant Dawn.

Bryce, is one the two secondary antagonists of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (along with the Black Knight). He is the loyal retainer and second in command of King Ashnard, the main villain of Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, and a member of the Four Riders, his elite squad.

Despite being the Pure Evil Mad King's right-hand man, he isn't truly evil, just too loyal to his liege. He wields the blessed lance Wishblade in battle and is the senior member of the Four Riders.

Biography[]

Backstory[]

Bryce was the servant of King Daein, Ashnard's father, from his fifteenth to his thirty-fifth birthday and served him faithfully. He joined his country's military and rose through the ranks, becoming one of Daein's four most important generals: the Four Riders. The other members of his team were Gawain, Tauroneo, and Lanvega. While serving in Daein's army Bryce befriended his fellow riders and came to respect Gawain's skills.

Following the massacre of thr Herons of the Serenes Forest, the Kingdom of Daein was touched by a strange plague, which killed countless people, including most of the royal family, except the king and one of his children, Prince Ashnard. The plague stopped after the king's demise and Ashnard took the throne. However, in front of Ashnard's bloodthirtiness, ambitions and partial involvement in the Serenes Massacre (he killed the princess of the Herons), all the riders sans Bryce decided to retire, with Tauroneo remaining in the army, Lanvega becoming a political figure and Gawain taking on a new identity under the name Greil and becoming the head of a mercenary crew in order to prevent Ashnard from getting his hands on Lehran's Medallion, a powerful item wich would allow Ashnard to free the goddess of Chaos and possibly cause the end of the world.

Some time later, two new riders joined Bryce (Gawain's former apprentice the Black Knight and Petrine) and King Ashnard decided to take over the world, in order to create a world in his own image: a world of anarchy where the strong rules over the weak. He took over the Kingdom of Crimea and ordered his scholar Izuka to turn the country's Crown Prince whom he captured, Renning, into the last member of his new Four Riders. Thus, Renning received Izuka's Feral Ones' drug and became the insane Bertram. Ashnard ordered the new Four Riders to search for Lehran's Medallion, now in the hands of Greil's daughter Mist, while helping conquer the world. Sir Bryce agreed to help him, albeit reluctantly.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance[]

Bryce first appears at the end of Chapter 26, where he warns Ashnard about the defeat of Bertram and the incoming arrival of the Crimean Army, led by Greil's son Ike and Bertram's niece Elincia. Ashnard orders Bryce to send more soldiers againt them, but Bryce points out that this would allow Elincia's forces to get the upper hand and reach Daein. However the bloodthirsty king reveals that he seeks a worthy opponent and actually wants Ike's troops to reach him and face him.

Bryce reappears during the Chapter 29, where he asks Ashnard to withdraw for his own safety, only for the madman to insult him and reval him that he slaughtered his whole family by causing the plague wich destroyed Daein (thanks to a Blood Pact, a magical artifact wich caused a curse killing thousands of people and was connected to King Daein Senior's lifespan, which is the reason why Ashnard tricked him into signing the pact with the help of a wiseman so he could kill him and become king). In spite of this Bryce chooses to remain at Ashnard's side out loyalty for the latter's late father and his country. He eventually faces Ike in battle and remarks that he's rather young for a general, but quickly changes his mind when the latter turns out to be a powerful foe and beats him. Upon defeat, Bryce recognizes Ike as Greil/Gawain's son and praises his strength before passing away.

 Quotes[]

Bryce: So you're the enemy general, eh? You're much younger than I had imagined.
Ike: My age matters not. The palace will be ours this day.
Bryce: We will not relinquish it so easily. But allow me to introduce myself as befits a warrior. I am Bryce of Daein.
Ike: And I am Ike of the Greil Mercenaries. Now let us begin.
[...]Ike: Your name was Bryce, was it not? You fought...a good fight.
Bryce: As...did you...Ike. I...commend you... Your style of fencing...is unique... Who was your teacher?
Ike: My father, Greil.
Bryce: I thought...I recognized that style. You truly are Gawain's... I see it...now... The resemblance...is strong...
Ike: Farewell, knight.
~ Bryce to Ike during their fight.
Bryce: I am Bryce, general of Daein!
~ Bryce's pre battle quote.
Bryce ...My strength...was not enough... I could not...protect...my homeland... Forgive me...Daein...
~ Bryce when defeated by someone who isn't Ike
