“ | Bryce: "Palekana's flames purify everything they touch. They encompass all doubts, all hesitations, and return them to ashes." Kasuga: "What happens when you find them? Just kill them and move on?" Bryce: "I will cleanse what I can however I must. And as for what shall face our goddess's unerring judgement, whatever or whomever.. ~ Bryce Fairchild to Ichiban Kasuga |
Bryce Fairchild, also known as the Overseer and the Sage, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Masataka Ebina) of the 2024 action-adventure RPG video game Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, specifically being the main antagonist of the Hawaii arc.
He is the Sage of Palekana, a religious Hawaiian organization with a history of more than one hundred years, worshiping the Volcano Goddess, Nele. However, it's revealed that Bryce is the infamous kingpin of the Hawaii criminal underworld, being the boss of two major crime organizations in Hawaii, the Barracudas (Led by Dwight Méndez) and the Ganzhe (A Chinese mafia in Honolulu City), while leading the Palekana like a personal army of sorts, brainwashing people and even orphan children into his regime. He's also a major ally of Ebina, as the two work together in order to turn Nele Island into a radioactive island to kill off the yakuza in a horrific manner.
He is also hunting down for a girl name Lani Mililani, who is revealed to be the true legitimate successor to Palekana, which causes Bryce to immediately find and eliminate her, along with her protector, Akane Kishida, the mother of Ichiban Kasuga just so he can keep his position as Sage of Palekana.
In Japanese, he's voiced by Tōru Furuya, who's best known for voicing Yamcha in the Dragon Ball franchise, and in English, he's voiced by Chris Parson.
Appearance[]
Bryce is an elderly thin man, with blonde hair and facial hair, with a little bit of white seen on him, which is justified since he's an old man. He's seen wearing a bright yellow shirt, with red flame-like patterns on the bottom, along with a pendant he wears around his neck, which is the insignia of Palekana, something he stole when he had the previous Sage murdered.
Personality[]
When he first appeared, Bryce Fairchild was seen to be a kind, wise, and noble leader of Palekana, speaking with a soft and gentle tone. He was seen to be a benevolent leader towards his religious community and was seen to be a father-figure towards the orphan children he takes in. Bryce was also seen to be a pacifist, as he tries to gently takes the gun from a terrified Ganzhe member, and takes pity on the man after attempting to shoot the gun, only for it to be blown into his face, gravely injuring him, and tries to help him, only to be harshly rejected.
However, as the story progressed, Bryce's true nature was later revealed to be that of a cruel, sinister, and twisted monster, who desires power and wealth. While he still spoke in a polite tone, it was more filled with a sadistic and manipulative tone, and he mostly keeps that friendly facade of his to hide his true nature. He was also seen having a major god complex, due to having the fanatical love of his cult that he ultimately brainwashed and being broker for powerful people, even going so far to declare himself to be close as a real divine figure.
Bryce is infamous in the criminal underworld, due to his extreme ruthlessness and his clear lack of empathy towards others, as he would often views his followers as expendable and clearly doesn't care about any of them, even his most loyal followers. This is best seen when he immediately guns down the assassin he hired to kill the previous Sage in order to hide his involvement and later on, during his boss fight, guns down one of his own men just to take his gun. He also reacts with rather apathy towards the death of a Haku follower by the name of Takada, stating that had he not been at odds with throwing his life away for Palekana, he wouldn't need to die so cruelly, which earn Tomizawa's hatred towards the apathetic elderly man. He's even feared by the likes of Dwight, who's clearly afraid of failing Bryce and Wong Tou, the commander of the Ganzhe, who hates Bryce for killing his mother and having her face shipped to him to display his power and ruthless.
Bryce is also shown to be doing whatever it takes to ensure he gets what he wants and doesn't care how many people will have to die for it. For example, he would gladly have Lani, the girl who is the rightful successor to Palekana, killed just so he can ensure his status as the Sage of Palekana is secure. Despite his seemingly kindness towards the orphans, he doesn't hesitate into turning the children into mindless followers, as he have them commit unspeakable crimes such as murdering two men as part of a "ritual', manipulating them into becoming sleeper agents into the police force, the Barracudas, and the Ganzhe, even going as far to change their face and voices to hide their original identity and appearances.
Even before becoming the Sage, he wasn't a trustworthy individual in Palekana, as the previous Sage and his wife were greatly concern about his ambitions and made plans to ensure he doesn't become the new Sage of Palekana, as well as to protect their family from him, showing that even in the past, he was an ruthless and dangerous man.
