Bubba is a minor antagonist in the Cars franchise. He is a brutish tow truck and Mater's childhood bully who still holds a grudge against him.
Biography[]
World of Cars[]
In the story "Hoodwinked", Bubba and his friend bully a young Mater and his cousins by stealing the former's hood. He later challenges Mater to a race, which the latter suggests should be held backwards. Since Mater was a far better backwards driver than Bubba was, he managed to beat Bubba, who lost control and crashed into the statue of Stanley.
Cars: Race-O-Rama[]
Bubba arrives in Ornament Valley with his sidekicks, Tater and Tater Jr. He challenges Mater to a series of races on Rustbucket Stadium, with the winner getting the exclusive towing rights in Radiator Springs. Mater wins the competition and even manages to befriend Tater and Tater Jr., prompting Bubba to swear vengeance before storming off.
Boom!Studios Comics[]
Radiator Springs[]
It's revealed that after the residents of Radiator Springs could no longer stand Bubba's bullying, they decided to teach him a lesson. They made him pass a "load test" that involved squeezing his sides with a metal press. Realizing what bullying felt like on the receiving end, he pleaded for mercy, and rushed out of Radiator Springs as soon as he was let out.
Route 66 Dash[]
Many years after his exile, Bubba returned to Radiator Springs to get revenge. He met up with Chick Hicks, introducing himself as his fan and claiming that he suffered unprovoked abuse by Lightning's friends, and the two entered the Route 66 Dash race as a team. During the race, they came across a group of cars who were told that Chick Hicks would give them autographs for free. Chick refused, but Bubba agreed to give them himself, earning many fans and making Chick jealous.
As the race went on, Mater and Bubba were at one point forced to tow Lightning and Chick respectively when the road got slippery. However, Bubba went off-road and got stuck in the mud. The other racers helped pull him out, but instead of expressing gratitude, Bubba knocked Mater into the same mud pit before driving off. This was the last straw for Chick, who's already been irritated by his teammate. He chased after Bubba and knocked him over, not even caring that this would mean that he'd lost the race, as he didn't want to share victory with an even bigger jerk than himself. The two were present at the award ceremony for Ramone and Fillmore, but parted on bad terms.
The Adventures of Tow Mater[]
Bubba, Tater and Tater Jr. challenged Mater to a racing derby, consisting of three challenges: tire-snagging, cone-dodging and a one-lap race. Bubba wins the first one by cheating, while Mater wins the second one. Before the third challenge, Bubba robs Sarge's compound while wearing Red's tires, which results in the blame falling on him. However, Bubba tights the bolts on his wheels poorly after changing the tires back, and as a result falls over during the final challenge, leaving Mater the winner. At the same time, the town residents find evidence that Bubba was the thief who robbed Sarge and have him taken to the impound.
Bubba was supposed to reappear in the fifth and sixth issues of the subseries, but they were cancelled.
Trivia[]
- After partnering up with Chick Hicks, Bubba mangles his "ka-chigga" catchphrase to make one of his own, "ka-chonga".
