Buford T. "Smokey" Justice is the titular main antagonist of the 1977 film Smokey and the Bandit and its sequels.

He was portrayed by the late Jackie Gleason.

History

The sheriff of Texarkana, Texas, Justice was the father of Junior, he was a sterotypical overweight, racist, homophobic, and corrupt lawman. One of his favorite things to call people he didn't like was "sumbitch".

After Carrie left Junior at the altar, Justice took off in pursuit after her, intending to bring her back to marry Junior. When Carrie joined Bandit Darville in his vehicle, Bandit became Justice's primary target, and he was obsessed with capturing Bandit and bringing him back to Texarkana so that he could punish Bandit for running.

Exceeding even the most generous readings of jurisdiction, Justice chased Bandit all the way from Tekarkana back to Atlanta, Georgia. After Bandit delivered the Coors his partner Cledus had been hauling to Big and Little Enos Burdette, they took off for Boston to pick up some clam chowder for the Burdettes. After exchanging compliments with Bandit, Justice took off after Bandit in what was left of his car.

Justice returned in the sequel movies, pursuing Bandit and his partner Cledus.

Trivia

  • Gleason refused to dub his lines to remove the profanity for the television versions of Smokey and the Bandit. As a result, Flinstones voice actor Henry Corden was brought in to dub the offending lines. The replacement of sumbitch with scumbum was very popular with children once the movie began appearing on television.
  • Justice was based on Burt Reynolds's father, who was a chief of police in Florida.
  • Gleason reprised his role at a charity event honoring Burt Reynolds 25 years in entertainment.1
