The Buggy Pirates (バギー海賊団 Bagī Kaizokudan) are supporting antagonists in the manga and anime series One Piece. They are a pirate crew led by Buggy the Clown who was dedicated to committing crimes common among pirates until they were defeated by Monkey D. Luffy and during their quest for revenge they ended up gaining more power due to a series of circumstances that gave them the opportunity to form alliances with Alvida, the Seven Warlords of the Sea and the Four Emperors, including the formation of sub-companies such as Buggy's Delivery and Cross Guild.
History[]
The Tightrope Walking Funan Brothers first appear after Nami tricks them, only to be rescued by Zoro chasing Luffy. They guide him to the Organ Islands, where Buggy's crew—led by Buggy himself and flanked by his acrobatic swordsman Cabaji—has seized a small town. Meanwhile, the Superhuman Domingos pursue Nami for stealing Buggy's Grand Line map, but Luffy drops in, dispatches the trio, and Nami convinces him to join forces.
The Straw Hats learn of the town's plight and counterattack. Cabaji, who once fought Zoro dishonorably and was defeated by Zoro's Oni Giri, is again overpowered when Zoro cuts Buggy's crew down. Mohji, the beast tamer who previously unleashed his lion Richie on Luffy, is sidelined as Nami ties up Buggy's detached body and Luffy flings his severed limbs across the island.
Through a series of slapstick misadventures—Buggy reassembling himself and then forging an alliance with Alvida—the crew inches toward a new status quo. Believing Buggy lost, Mohji and Cabaji clash for captaincy, only for Richie (the same lion who sleepwalked his way to “Man-Demon” renown) to knock them both out and be humorously anointed captain. They're promptly captured by the cannibalistic Kumate Tribe, then rescued when Buggy rejoins his body. Pursuing the Straw Hats to Loguetown, Buggy traps Luffy on the execution platform, with Cabaji and Mohji ready to finish him off. But a freak lightning strike fries the stand, Luffy escapes, and the Buggy Pirates fall back. They follow the Straw Hats into the Grand Line—on a different course—where they chance upon Portgas D. Ace. Unaware he's Luffy's brother, Ace briefly aids them before departing.
Later, Buggy is arrested and sent to Impel Down. Alvida initially abandons the crew, but after Buggy's daring breakout—during which he recruits formidable criminals far stronger than himself—he returns to liberate the other pirates. At Marineford's Summit War, Buggy hangs back until the end, then helps Jinbe and a wounded Luffy to safety aboard the Heart Pirates' sub.
In the aftermath, Buggy's newfound reputation (as “one of Gold Roger's apprentices,” plus endorsements from Whitebeard and Shanks) draws legions of followers, swelling his ranks. Reunited with his original crewmates—Mohji, Cabaji, Richie, and others like Mr. 3—he receives an invitation to join the Seven Warlords of the Sea, which he accepts.
Under Warlord pardon, the expanded Buggy Pirates (now allied with Alvida) battle the World Pirates and face off again against Gairam's Cube Booster assault—Cabaji and Mohji dodge the onslaught but, true to form, “go with the flow” of cheering Buggy's hollow boasts. They escape the Marines, then establish a New World base on Karai Bari Island as “Buggy's Delivery,” a mercenary dispatch organization.
The crew grows further when giants like Hajrudin join. At their feast celebrating Doflamingo's fall, Mohji inadvertently spoils the mood by revealing that the Giant Warrior Pirates defected to the Straw Hats. They later attend the Pirates Festival on Delta Island, cheering for Buggy in lockstep.
After the Warlord system's abolition, they become wanted criminals once more—only for Buggy to ride the wave of Kaido and Big Mom's defeat at Onigashima and be proclaimed, alongside Luffy, as one of the “New Emperors.” Throughout, Cabaji continues his deadly acrobatics, Mohji remains the ever-loyal beast tamer, and Richie the lion stays ready to sleepwalk into glory at a moment's notice.
