That's my map, and I'm gonna get it back no matter who I have to kill.
~ Buggy's introduction.
What's real is I've been scheming for months to steal that map from old Axe-Hand Moron...Huh? Eh...only to find out that I was upstaged by three little nobodies, who stole it from right under my no- NO! It's in my head now!
~ Buggy to Luffy and his friends about the map to the Grand Line which was taken by the Straw Hat Pirates, before catching himself on mentioning his nose.

Buggy the Clown is the secondary antagonist of Season 1 of the 2023 live-action series One Piece, based on the anime/manga franchise of the same name. He is the clown-themed captain of the Buggy Pirates who ate the Chop-Chop Fruit, thus giving him the ability to split his body into pieces and control them.

He is portrayed by Jeff Ward, who also portrayed Deke Shaw in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Biography[]

Buggy is first seen in the second episode called "The Man in the Straw Hat". He kidnaps Luffy, Zoro and Nami into his circus tent, in addition to locals in Orange Town, forcing them to watch the circus show presumably against their will. Unfortunately for him, Luffy swallowed the map of the Grand Line prior to the kidnapping. The trio wake up and find themselves into a circus tent, and Buggy complains about his performance not being up to snuff. Luffy unknowingly offends Buggy by telling him that he saw his wanted poster in Shells Town and asks about his clown nose being real or not, in addition to getting his name wrong. The clown rants how furiously he spent months trying to steal the Grand Line map from Captain Morgan, only to find out that map stolen by Luffy, Zoro and Nami. Luffy declares his dream to become King of the Pirates, only for Buggy and the audience (albeit against their will) to laugh at him. He wastes no time outright mentioning that he isn't one to share the spotlight with Zoro and is prepared to kill the Straw Hat trio.

Buggy unleashes his wrath and takes it out on Luffy and questions why he would go to the Grand Line in the first place, assuming Luffy's reasons were either to impress an absent parent, a lost love, or a role model. Adding salt to the wound, Buggy offends Luffy by stabbing his straw hat that was given to him none other than his beloved mentor, Shanks. He reveals that he used to be friends with Shanks and joined in the same pirate crew until he supposedly betrayed him. Luffy gets angrier and tells Buggy to stop insulting Shanks, to no avail. Remaining unperturbed, he forces a young boy from the audience and takes him as his hostage. He threats the child by attempting to amputate his body until he breaks his spine. Thankfully, Luffy narrowly saves the unharmed child by using his own Gum-Gum abilities. Buggy also showcases his Chop-Chop abilities as well, proudly telling him that he can dice him as much as he can but his body parts will always return to him. After finding out of his opponent's Gum-Gum abilities, he attempts to confine him inside a glass box to pour water all over it to drown Luffy. He nearly dies, but fortunately Zoro broke the glass mid-fight and the water bursts out of the glass box as Luffy survives. Angered, Buggy noticed that Luffy survived and regurgitated the Grand Line map he swallowed. They both retrieve their respective items such as his straw hat and the map. Zoro and Nami prepare to fight Buggy, and he separates his body parts once again. At first, he gained the upper hand but Luffy threats him that while he can pour salt water all over him, the clown cannot come after his friends. He dodges Buggy's body parts and the clown stabs his straw hat once again laughing at him. His hand attempts to strangle him but he informs Nami and Zoro to confine his body parts into boxes and closing them, thus denying Buggy access to his body parts. He taunts Luffy that he will never claim the One Piece and that he's a sad, lonely boy wearing Shank's hat. He retorts that while he knows what he is, and once again declares his goal. As he finishes him off, Buggy begs Luffy to stop and spare him but his demand is disregarded and he gets thrown out of his own circus tent.

Buggy is next seen in the middle of an alliance with Arlong's pirate crew in the sixth episode, "The Chef and the Chore Boy". Being bodiless, Buggy makes the best of it by making deals with Arlong's pirate crew to find Luffy, but when Nami steals the Grand Line map and defects to Arlong's team; he has no choice but to assist Luffy in finding Nami and Arlong, much to Zoro's, Ussop's and Sanji's collective consternation.

In the seventh episode, "The Girl with the Sawfish Tattoo" Buggy slacks off and annoys Ussop and Zoro to the point that they threaten to throw his head into the water so he annoyingly protests reminding them that they have respective goals such as getting the Grand Line map back and that Buggy wants his body back. He sings a sea shanty about Nami to pass the time, much to their irritations. Having had enough of his caterwauling, Ussop and Zoro throw him inside a barrel to silence him. Buggy's headless body is next seen in Arlong's park shaking around. He also questions the Straw Hats about their plan to get Nami back and stop her from making a mistake she'll regret and doubts that they will succeed, only for Sanji to silence him once again by stuffing a tangerine into his mouth.

Buggy makes his final appearance in the season one finale episode, "Worst in the East". Inside the bag, he taunts Sanji and Zoro about the status of their battle against Arlong's pirate crew. He notifies them that he found his body. He makes a last ditch deal with the Straw Hats that he can assist them in the fight if he gets his body back. They oblige his request only for Buggy to betray them at the last second and flees the scene, much to Zoro's annoyance. He is last seen forming yet another alliance with Alvida, seeing the most recent wanted poster of Monkey D. Luffy for 30 million Berry as they make plans to win the ransom money.

Personality[]

Buggy is a egotistical and prideful clown who loves nothing more than being the center of attention at every instance that arises. He has a mordant sense of humor and does not hesitate to disregard the well-being of others around him in addition to using other villains like Arlong and Alvida for his own personal agenda. Due to the nature of his Devil Fruit, he arrogantly assumes that he is invincible based off his abilities.

Appearance[]

Buggy is a skinny blue-haired man with an appearance resembling that of a clown. The big, red nose on his face is indeed his real nose, and he takes great offence to when Luffy questioned if his nose was real or not.

Buggy's face is always covered with makeup, just like a clown, and the motifs change from time to time: in his first appearance he had crossbones going down his face forming an X; he also had two blue lines near both of his eyes, smeared red lipstick and his jolly roger on his hat.

In his pirate captain attire, he wears a striped white and short sleeved red shirt, he wears white gloves similar to the ones worn by clowns, in addition to a sash around his waist like many other pirates, and a pair of loose pants reaching to his calves, above a pair of striped socks and pointy shoes. He also has a scarf around his neck. Hanging from his shoulders there is an orange, fur-lined captain's coat. On his head, he has an orange hat with his jolly roger on it, over a neckerchief with the same pattern of his shirt.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Chop-Chop Fruit - Due to devouring the Chop-Chop Fruit, Buggy is capable of separating his body parts at his own free will.
  • Knife Proficiency - Buggy is skilled at wielding knives.
