Bugly is a minor antagonist in the Transformers franchise. The original version of the character was part of the 1988 toyline.
Marvel Comics[]
Bugly was introduced in Issue #40 as one of six members of Scorponok's crew who underwent the Pretender process, being equipped with shells that made them resemble giant monsters. Their first mission was a raid on Alternate Reality Inc., after Scorponok detected a data tap based there. On their arrival, they were confronted by the new Autobot Pretenders, who were being directed by the mind of Optimus Prime, held on a computer disc. Bugly and the others were soon driven off.
During the Underbase Saga, Bugly was present to help out Scorponok when his attempt to make contact with Ratbat's Earth Decepticons led to a conflict between the two groups. Bugly fought with Skywarp, managing to blast him out of the sky by predicting where he would teleport to. After the two Decepticon groups allied with the Autobots and each other against the Underbase-powered Starscream, Bugly was part of a group led by Scorponok and Grimlock who defended Tokyo. He was among the few to survive the battle, since he and the other Pretenders were protected by their organic shells.
Bugly and the other Pretenders were selected by Scorponok to carry out his plan to use a lightning storm to generate energy. A storm-making machine would cause a storm above New York, with Iguanus being assigned to place an energy collector on top of the Empire States Building. The storm would strike the collector, destroying a huge chunk of New York in the process, with Bugly and Bomb-Burst assigned to fly Iguanus to safety before the storm struck. However, the plan was disrupted by the Autobot Micromasters, and Roadhandler managed to knock the collector out of position. Iguanus dived for it and was struck by the full force of the storm. Witnessing this, Bugly and Bomb-Burst quickly retreated, leaving Iguanus to his fate. Bugly made his last appearance in Issue #55, helping Submarauder back into his Pretender shell after he ferried Lord Zarak back to the Decepticon base.
